Research productivity in the field of physical exercise and epilepsy: A bibliometric analysis of the scholarly literature with qualitative synthesis

The relationship between physical activity and cognitive function in people with epilepsy: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to systematically review the published literature evaluating the association between physical activity and cognitive function in people with epilepsy (PWE).

METHODS

A comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and PsychInfo was performed on June 20, 2022. Studies were excluded if they were not available in the English language, contained animal data only, did not include any original data, were not peer-reviewed, or did not include PWE as a discrete group. PRISMA guidelines were followed. The GRADE scale was used to assess the risk of bias.

RESULTS

Six studies were identified with a total of 123 participants. These included one observational study and five interventional studies, only one of which was a randomized controlled trial. In all studies, there was a positive association between physical activity and cognitive function in PWE. Both interventional studies showed improvement in at least one domain of cognitive functioning, though there was heterogeneity in the outcome measures used.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a potential positive association between physical activity and cognitive function in PWE, but available data is limited by heterogeneity, small sample size, and an overall lack of published studies in this area of research. There is a need for more robust studies to be performed in larger samples of PWE.

Current trends and hotspots in drug-resistant epilepsy research: Insights from a bibliometric analysis

Background

Drug-resistance is a significant clinical issue in persons with epilepsy. In the past few years, many studies have been published investigating the management of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE); however, no systematic and quantitative evaluation of this research has been performed. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to demonstrate the current status of DRE research and to reflect the trends and hotspots within the field.

Methods

We retrieved publications on DRE published between 2011 and 2021 from the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection. All articles related to DRE were included in this study. VOSviewer, R software, and CiteSpace were used to perform bibliometric research.

Results

A total of 3,088 original articles were included in this study. The number of publications on DRE has continued to increase over the past 11 years. The USA published the most papers with the highest number of citations and H-index. The National Institutes of Health and the University of Toronto were the most prolific funding agency and affiliation, respectively. Epilepsy & Behavior and Epilepsia ranked first as the most prolific and co-cited journals, respectively. The keywords “cannabidiol”, “neuromodulation”, “seeg” and “perampanel” revealed recent research hotspots. The top 100 most cited papers were classified into eight main topics, of which pharmacotherapy, disease mechanisms/pathophysiology, and neuromodulation were the three most important topics.

Conclusions

This analysis of bibliometric data demonstrated that DRE has always been a topical area of research. The mechanisms of epilepsy and therapies have been the focus of DRE research, and innovative antiseizure medications and surgical approaches are fast-developing research trends.

A Conceptual Framework for Food Sharing as Collaborative Consumption

Food waste has increased significantly and become a global issue amidst a growing concern regarding famine in several countries. Food sharing constitutes the solution to the problem provided an appropriate framework is developed that guides its application. The sharing economy was touted as the appropriate framework, yet it is excessively macroscopic to be able to capture the dynamics of food sharing activities. A microscopic framework is required to overcome this problem, the concept of collaborative consumption with its focus on activity level being one potential solution. However, an investigation into how food sharing activities can be viewed as collaborative consumption should be completed. This paper presents an analysis of the relationship between food sharing activities and collaborative consumption. The authors employed a systematic literature review conducted by meta-analysis and content analysis to identify the commonalities between the two and the theories underlying them. The result is a conceptual framework of food sharing activities as a collaborative consumption practice. The framework highlights eight propositions that can explain the intention, performance, and continuity of food sharing activities. At the end of the paper, the authors outline the theoretical and managerial contributions and recommend future research activities.

Knowledge and attitudes of physical educators toward epilepsy and students with epilepsy: A cross-sectional study from Palestine

OBJECTIVE

The study aimed to test knowledge and attitudes of physical educators in Palestine toward epilepsy and students with epilepsy. The study also aimed to identify the variables that were associated with adequate knowledge and positive attitudes toward epilepsy and students with epilepsy.

METHODS

This study was done in a cross-sectional design among physical educators in Palestinian schools. The questionnaire tested knowledge and attitudes of physical educators using 18-item and 12-statement tests, respectively.

RESULTS

Complete questionnaires were returned by 226 physical educators (response rate = 75.3%). The median knowledge score of the physical educators on the 18-item knowledge test was 50% [33.0%, 61.0] and the median attitudes score of the physical educators on the 12-statemtns was 50.0% [42.0, 58.0]. Higher knowledge scores were associated with age, teaching experience, educational level, having known/interacted with people with epilepsy, and receiving education about epilepsy. Higher attitude scores were associated with gender, age, educational level, place of residence, type of school, having known/interacted with people with epilepsy, and receiving education about epilepsy.

CONCLUSION

Knowledge gaps and negative attitudes toward epilepsy and students with epilepsy were identified among physical educators in Palestine. Appropriately designed interventions are still needed to improve knowledge and correct attitudes of physical educators about epilepsy and students with epilepsy.
