Abstract
The use of tumor markers aids in the early detection of cancer recurrence and prognosis. There is a hope that they might also be useful in screening tests for the early detection of cancer. Here, the question of finding ideal tumor markers, which should be sensitive, specific, and reliable, is an acute issue. Human plasma is one of the most popular samples as it is commonly collected in the clinic and provides noninvasive, rapid analysis for any type of disease including cancer. Many efforts have been applied in searching for “ideal” tumor markers, digging very deep into plasma proteomes. The situation in this area can be improved in two ways—by attempting to find an ideal single tumor marker or by generating panels of different markers. In both cases, proteomics certainly plays a major role. There is a line of evidence that the most abundant, so-called “classical plasma proteins”, may be used to generate a tumor biomarker profile. To be comprehensive these profiles should have information not only about protein levels but also proteoform distribution for each protein. Initially, the profile of these proteins in norm should be generated. In our work, we collected bibliographic information about the connection of cancers with levels of “classical plasma proteins”. Additionally, we presented the proteoform profiles (2DE patterns) of these proteins in norm generated by two-dimensional electrophoresis with mass spectrometry and immunodetection. As a next step, similar profiles representing protein perturbations in plasma produced in the case of different cancers will be generated. Additionally, based on this information, different test systems can be developed.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are essential components of the mucosal barrier of the female reproductive tract (FRT) and are involved in many important physiological processes, including shaping the microbiota and maintaining normal reproduction and pregnancy. Gynecological cancers seriously threaten women's health and bring a heavy burden to society so that new strategies are needed to deal with these diseases. Recent studies have suggested that AMPs also have a complex yet intriguing relationship with gynecological cancers. The expression level of AMPs changes during tumor progression and they may act as promising biomarkers in cancer detection and prognosis prediction. Although AMPs have long been considered as host protective, they actually play a "double-edged sword" role in gynecological cancers, either tumorigenic or antitumor, depending on factors such as AMP and cancer types, as well as AMP concentrations. Moreover, AMPs are associated with chemoresistance and regulation of AMPs' expression may alter sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy. However, more work is needed, especially on the identification of molecular mechanisms of AMPs in the FRT, as well as the clinical application of these AMPs in detection, diagnosis and treatment of gynecological malignancies.

Abstract
The cytoplasmic protein AXIN1 is involved in the Wnt signalling pathway and its expression is increased in patients with endometriosis compared with healthy controls. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to further assess the levels of AXIN1 and other inflammatory biomarkers in patients with endometriosis. Patients with laparoscopy-verified endometriosis were recruited (n=172) and completed a questionnaire regarding socioeconomic factors, lifestyle habits and medical history. Plasma AXIN1 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were analysed by ELISA. The levels of calprotectin were determined in the faeces, and the haemoglobin concentration and number of erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets were determined in the blood in a subgroup of 64 patients during clinical routine procedures. F-calprotectin expression was detected in 18 women (28.1%), who had more severe constipation and more frequently experienced incomplete evacuation when defecating, and 5 women (7.8%) exhibited elevated levels. P-AXIN1 levels were higher in patients who received hormonal treatment, and correlated inversely with faecal-calprotectin levels (P=0.003), B-haemoglobin levels (P=0.030) and the numbers of B-erythrocytes (P=0.033) and B-platelets (P=0.017), but were not correlated with hs-CRP levels (P=0.818). Higher levels of AXIN1 were associated with the duration of the gastrointestinal symptoms and with diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and nausea and the intestinal symptoms' effect on quality of life, and tended to be associated with the duration of endometriosis. Hs-CRP expression was not associated with the clinical characteristics or symptoms of endometriosis, but higher levels were associated with obesity (P=0.002) and hormonal treatment (P=0.011). In conclusion, P-AXIN1 expression was negatively correlated with certain inflammatory biomarkers and was positively associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. P-AXIN1 levels were increased in patients who received hormonal treatment, highlighting the importance of obtaining native samples for future studies regarding its role in the development and presentation of endometriosis. However, hs-CRP and other studied biomarkers seemed to be of no value for the assessment and diagnosis of endometriosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Calprotectin, a protein released by neutrophils, has been used in many studies as a biomarker showing the presence of inflammation. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between serum calprotectin level and response to the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). METHODS The present study is a prospective, cross-sectional historical cohort study. The study group consisted of 44 patients with ISSHL, and the control group consisted of 41 healthy volunteers without ear pathology. At the same time, patients in the study group were divided into three groups according to the response to ISSHL treatment (recovered, partially recovered, unrecovered). The relationship between the groups was statistically evaluated in terms of serum calprotectin levels. RESULTS The mean serum calprotectin value was 75.67±19.48 ng/mL in the study group and 50.24±29.14 ng/mL in the control group (P=0.001). Serum calprotectin value according to the severity of hearing loss in the mild, moderate and severe was 66.20±8.82, 70.35±16.77, and 91.23±19.73 ng/mL, respectively. Serum calprotectin value in the severe group was significantly higher compared to the moderate and mild groups (P=0.004, P=0.001, respectively). Serum calprotectin value according to the treatment response in the recovered, partially recovered and unrecovered groups was 63.36±11.54, 80.17±12.06, and 85.33±22.33 ng/mL, respectively. Serum calprotectin value in the recovered group was significantly lower compared to the partially recovered and unrecovered groups (P=0.002, P=0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION Serum calprotectin value informs the clinician about both the severity of hearing loss and the response to treatment. Hence, serum calprotectin can be used as an important biomarker in ISSHL patients for the determination of the prognosis of disease.

Abstract
Calprotectin is an S100 protein and marker of inflammation found in neutrophils and monocytes; S100 proteins are a family of calcium-modulated proteins. The aim of this study was to determine if the serum concentration of calprotectin is higher in patients with laryngeal carcinoma than in patients with benign laryngeal pathologies and controls. The study included 107 participants. The serum calprotectin concentration was analyzed using the calprotectin ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) kit (Calpo AS, Norway). EDTA-serum for analysis was collected prior to surgery from patients with laryngeal carcinoma (n = 41), those with a benign laryngeal pathology (Reinke's edema, vocal nodules, etc.) (n = 32), and healthy controls (n = 34). The median serum calprotectin concentration was significantly higher in the laryngeal carcinoma group (2179.6 μg L-1) than in the benign laryngeal pathology group (727.84 μg L-1) and control group (733.73 μg L-1) (P < 0.05). The median serum calprotectin concentration in patients with advanced-stage laryngeal cancer (5854.,4 μg L-1) was significantly higher than in those with early-stage laryngeal cancer (971.84 μg L-1) (P < 0.05); however, there was not a significant difference in the median calprotectin concentration between the control and benign laryngeal pathology groups (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the median serum calprotectin concentration in the patients with early-stage laryngeal cancer (n = 21) (971.84 μg L-1) was significantly higher than that in the benign laryngeal pathology and control groups (n = 64) (730.6 μg L-1) (P < 0.05). The serum calprotectin concentration was strongly correlated with poor survival and advanced-stage laryngeal carcinoma. Malignant laryngeal cancer patients (n = 4) that died during follow-up had a higher median serum calprotectin concentration (9468.4 μg L-1) than those that remained alive (n = 37) (857.78 μg L-1) (P < 0.05). The serum calprotectin concentration is higher in patients with laryngeal carcinoma than in those with benign laryngeal pathologies and healthy controls. The present findings show that the serum calprotectin concentration might be used as a marker to discriminate between laryngeal carcinoma and benign laryngeal pathologies. Additional research is needed to further assess the value of this parameter as a useful tumor marker for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of laryngeal carcinoma.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate serum calprotectin levels and oxidative stress status in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and the changes in their levels after total thyroidectomy. The study involved 30 patients with PTC and 30 healthy controls. Blood samples were obtained from the PTC patients before and 1 month after the operation. Preoperative and postoperative serum samples from PTC patients and healthy controls were analysed for calprotectin, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and lipid hydroperokside (LOOH). The preoperative calprotectin, TOS, OSI and LOOH levels of the patients with PTC were significantly higher compared to those of the control group (p < 0.001, for each). The levels of calprotectin decreased significantly in patients with PTC after the operation (p < 0.001), while TAS, TOS and OSI levels remained unchanged (p = 0.313, p = 0.085 and p = 0.163, respectively). Preoperative serum calprotectin levels were positively correlated with TOS, OSI and LOOH levels and negatively correlated with TAS levels in patients with PTC. In conclusion, serum calprotectin levels is increased in patients with PTC, and calprotectin is positively correlated with TOS and LOOH. Serum calprotectin levels is significantly decreased after total thyroidectomy.
