Hydrophobic mechanochemical treatment of metallic surfaces wettability measurements as a means of assessing homogeneity

Formation of Highly Ordered Self-Assembled Monolayers on Two-Dimensional Materials via Noncovalent Functionalization

Functionalized two-dimensional materials (2DMs) are attracting much attention due to their promising applications in nanoscale devices. Producing continuous and homogeneous surface assemblies with a high degree of order has been challenging. In this work, we demonstrate that by noncovalently self-assembling molecular platforms on 2DMs, high-quality and highly ordered monolayers can be generated. The high degree of order and uniformity of the self-assembled monolayer layers were confirmed by a variety of analytic techniques including time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, scanning tunnelling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, by selectively enhancing the molecular vibrations of the molecular platform, via a combination of graphene-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (GERS) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), we were able to determine the orientation of self-assembled molecular platforms with respect to the surface normal. The selective enhancement of the vibrational modes occurs by taking advantage of the distance dependence of the Raman enhancement either by the graphene surface (GERS) or the silver nanoparticules (SERS) that are located on top of the self-assembled monolayer.

The healing effect of unrestricted somatic stem cells loaded in collagen-modified nanofibrous PHBV scaffold on full-thickness skin defects

Unrestricted somatic stem cells (USSCs) loaded in nanofibrous PHBV scaffold can be used for skin regeneration when grafted into full-thickness skin defects of rats. Nanofibrous PHBV scaffolds were designed using electrospinning method and then, modified with the immobilized collagen via the plasma method. Afterward, the scaffolds were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, physical and mechanical assays. In this study; nanofibrous PHBV scaffolds loaded with and without USSCs were grafted into the skin defects. The wounds were subsequently investigated at 21 days after grafting. Results of mechanical and physical analyses showed good resilience and compliance to movement as a skin graft. In animal models; all study groups excluding the control group exhibited the most pronounced effect on wound closure, with the statistically significant improvement in wound healing being seen on post-operative Day 21. Histological and immunostaining examinations of healed wounds from all groups, especially the groups treated with stem cells, showed a thin epidermis plus recovered skin appendages in the dermal layer. Thus, the graft of collagen-coated nanofibrous PHBV scaffold loaded with USSC showed better results during the healing process of skin defects in rat model.

The relationship between cellular adhesion and surface roughness in polystyrene modified by microwave plasma radiation

Background:

Surface modification of medical polymers can improve biocompatibility. Pure polystyrene is hydrophobic and cannot provide a suitable environment for cell cultures. The conventional method for surface modification of polystyrene is treatment with plasma. In this study, conventional polystyrene was exposed to microwave plasma treatment with oxygen and argon gases for 30, 60, and 180 seconds.

Methods and results:

Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra investigations of irradiated samples indicated clearly the presence of functional groups. Atomic force microscopic images of samples irradiated with inert and active gases indicated nanometric surface topography. Samples irradiated with oxygen plasma showed more roughness (31 nm) compared with those irradiated with inert plasma (16 nm) at 180 seconds. Surface roughness increased with increasing duration of exposure, which could be due to reduction of the contact angle of samples irradiated with oxygen plasma. Contact angle analysis showed reduction in samples irradiated with inert plasma. Samples irradiated with oxygen plasma showed a lower contact angle compared with those irradiated by argon plasma.

Conclusion:

Cellular investigations with unrestricted somatic stem cells showed better adhesion, cell growth, and proliferation for samples radiated by oxygen plasma with increasing duration of exposure than those of normal samples.

Retention forces and contact angles for critical liquid drops on non-horizontal surfaces

Retention forces and drop parameters are investigated for drops on the verge of sliding on vertical and inclined surfaces. Using earlier observations of drop geometry, the retentive-force factor relating surface-tension forces to contact-angle hysteresis is reliably determined. The retention force for a drop is found to be insignificantly affected by the aspect ratio of its contour. The maximum size of a drop is predicted with good accuracy, based on the two-circle method for approximating shapes of drops. The Bond number of a critical drop is found to be constant for a given surface and liquid. A general relation is proposed between the characteristic advancing and receding contact angles. The relation is supported by a large set of contact-angle data. In the absence of theta R data, the relation allows estimating the receding contact angle and the critical drop size, using only the advancing angle.

Electron transport through a self-assembled monolayer of thiol-end-functionalized tetraphenylporphines and metal tetraphenylporphines

The monolayers of several thiol-end-functionalized tetraphenylphophines (SH-TPP) and metal tetraphenylporphines (SH-MTPP) were self-assembled on gold surfaces and identified by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, and the contact angle. The CV peaks of the [Fe(CN)6]3-/ [Fe(CN)6]4- couple were used to identify the efficiency of electrons transferring through the self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The results suggested that SH-TPP and SH-MTPP could form high-quality SAMs on gold surfaces. The SAMs blocked electron transport from the gold electrode to solution. When the length of the thiol-end-link spacer (alkyl group) increased, the electron transport ability of the SAM decreased because of the increased insulator properties of the alkyl chain. With the insertion of metallic ions, the electron transport ability of the SAM of SH-MTPP increased compared to that of the SAM of SH-TPP, which was probably due to the fact that (i) the insertion of metallic ions changed the molecular structure and the molecular structure of SH-MTPP played an important role in electron transport through the SAM and (ii) the insertion of metallic ions increased the electron tunneling probability through the monolayer.

Influence of Swimsuit Design and Fabric Surface Properties on the Butterfly Kinematics

This study investigated the influence of the covering swimsuit and the fabric surface properties on the butterfly stroke kinematics. Surface properties were evaluated by wetting measurements of two fabric samples: one for training suits and one for competition suits. The surface of the second one was coated by mechanochemical treatment in order to modify its surface properties. Nine national level swimmers performed a 50-m butterfly at submaximal velocity in three swimsuit conditions: conventional, long, and coated long swimsuits. From video recording, the hip was digitized at the entry and exit of the swimmer's hand in order to calculate the duration, hip displacement, and hip linear velocity during underwater and recovery phases and during stroke. The results for wetting show that competition fabric was more water-repellent than training fabric, but both were isotropic. Moreover, the mechanochemical treatment increased water repellency and anisotropy. The swimming results indicated that, when compared to a conventional swimsuit, wearing a coated long swimsuit increased hip linear velocity during stroke, and particularly during the recovery phase which had a shorter duration. These results suggest that the covering swimsuit should be coupled with the water repellent and anisotropic properties of the fabric surface in order to improve swimming performance.
