Abstract
The protonation constants are one of the most fundamental properties of biological molecules. The determination of the constants of the dipeptide is interesting and necessary for a full understanding of its activities in biological process. In this study, the protonation constants of some aliphatic alanine dipeptides (alanyl-alanine, alanyl-phenylalanine, alanyl-valine, alanyl-leucine, and alanyl-methionine) were studied in water and ethanol-water mixtures (20%ethanol-80%water;40%ethanol-60%water;60%ethanol-40%water, (v/v)) at 25 ± 0.1 °C under nitrogen atmosphere and ionic strength at 0.10 mol L-1 by potentiometry. The constants of the systems were calculated using Best computer program. The effects of the different amino acids bound to the alanine on the acidity of the alanyl dipeptides were investigated. The constants were influenced by changes in solvent composition and their variations were discussed in terms of solvent and structural properties.

Abstract
The protonation equilibria of glycine (gly), glycyl-glycine (gly-gly), and glycyl-glycyl-glycine (gly-gly-gly) and their formation constants with triphenyltin(IV) chloride were studied over a wide pH range (pH 1–11), using a combination of spectrophotometric and potentiometric methods at constant temperature (25 °C), different ethanol–water mixtures (50%–80%, v/v), and constant ionic strength (0.1 mol dm–3 NaClO4). Least-squares regression calculations are consistent with the formation of ph3SnHL+, ph3SnL, and ph3SnH–1L– complex species, where L– represents the fully dissociated form of each ligand. The stability constant of the formed complexes in different media were analyzed in terms of Kamlet, Abboud, and Taft (KAT) parameters. Single-parameter correlations of the stability constants versus α (hydrogen-bond donor acidity), β (hydrogen-bond acceptor basicity), and for π* (dipolarity/polarizability) are relatively poor in all solutions, but multi-parameter correlations represent significant improvements with regard to the single- and dual-parameter models. Linear correlation is observed when the experimental logβxyz values are plotted versus the calculated ones, while all the KAT parameters are considered. Also, the stability constant values of the formed complexes are determined in zero percent of organic solvent using the Yasuda–Shedlovsky extrapolation approach. Finally, the results are discussed in terms of the effect of solvent on complexation.

Abstract
The reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) behavior of some newly synthesized hydroxythioxanthone derivatives using binary acetonitrile-water mixtures as mobile phase has been examined. First, the variation in the retention time of each molecule as a function of mobile phase properties was studied by Kamlet-Taft solvatochromic equations. Then, the influences of molecular structure of the hydroxythioxanthone derivatives on their retention time in various mobile phase mixtures were investigated by quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) analysis. Finally, a unified model containing both the molecular structure parameters and mobile phase properties was developed to describe the chromatographic behavior of the systems studied. Among the solvent properties, polarity/polarizability parameter (pi*) and hydrogen-bond basicity (beta), and among the solute properties, the most positive local charge (MPC), the sum of positive charges on hydrogen atoms contributing in hydrogen bonding (SPCH) and lipophilicity index (logP) were identified as controlling factors in the RP-HPLC behavior of hydroxythioxanthone derivatives in actonitrile-water binary solvents.

Abstract
The spectroscopic properties of enoxacin (ENO), oxolinic acid (OXO) and nalidixic acid (NAL) were studied in various H2O-CH3OH and H2O-CH3CN mixed solvents because these solvents were thought to behave as a biological mimetic system. ENO has piperazinyl group, but OXO and NAL do not have this substituent. The fluorescence emission spectra of ENO were very sensitive to the composition of the solvents. In the Lippert-Mataga analysis of the steady-state fluorescence data, clear reverse solvatochromism was exhibited for ENO in both mixed solvents. This observation can be explained using the excited state twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) from the nitrogen of the piperazinyl group to the keto oxygen. Theoretical calculations further support this observation. The nonradiative and radiative rate constants of these molecules were analyzed as a function of dipolarity-polarizability (pi*) and hydrogen bond donor acidity (alpha) of the mixed solvents. These results for ENO were consistent with the suggested mechanism of the TICT very well. The influence of bulk dielectric effect was more significant relative to the specific hydrogen bonding interactions. The emission spectra of OXO and NAL do not exhibit any characteristic responses to the properties of the solvent.

Abstract
The progress and photosensitivity of quinolone antibiotics are briefly described. By the photolysis of nalidixic acid, the loss of -COOH group is observed. The photoreaction of fluoroquinolones involves heterolytic C-F bond fragmentation. The protonation and divalent cation complexation equilibria are also examined. The spectroscopic properties of these drugs are intensively investigated in biological mimetic systems such as AOT reverse micelle, and H(2)O-CH(3)OH and H(2)O-CH(3)CN mixed solvents. For ofloxacin and norfloxacin, the excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) is observed. So, fluorescence spectra exhibit reverse solvatochromism in mixed solvents. The change of radiative and non-radiative rate constant can also be explained using this ICT. The influence of dielectric effects of solvent is more significant compared with the specific hydrogen bonding interaction. Theoretical treatments support all of these results.

Abstract
The potential of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) have been investigated for the separation and quantitative determination of 10 quinolone antibiotics. The influence of different conditions, such as the buffer and pH of the electrolyte, the surfactant and the ion-pairing agents added to the electrolyte and the organic modifier were studied. A buffer consisting of 40 mM sodium tetraborate at pH 8.1 containing 10% (v/v) methanol was found to be a highly efficient electrophoretic system for separating lomefloxacin, enoxacin, norfloxacin, pipemidic acid, ofloxacin, piromidic acid, flumequine, oxolinic acid, cinoxacin and nalidixic acid. A solid-phase extraction method to remove the sample matrix (pig plasma samples) was developed on a C(18) cartridge using a mixture of methanol-water (70:30, v/v). The method is specific and reproducible and mean recoveries were in the range 94.0+/-4.2% and 123.3+/-4.1% for pig plasma samples over the range used. A linear relationship between concentration and peak area for each compound in pig plasma samples was obtained in the concentration range 5-20 mg l(-1) and detection limits were between 1.1 and 2.4 mg l(-1).
