Abstract
Fundamental research on non-spectroscopic interferences, also known as matrix effects, in inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry with sample introduction using nebulization is critically and exclusively examined in this review, starting with fundamental processes that may be a source of matrix effects during sample introduction, ion generation in the ICP, ion extraction through the interface, and ion transport through the ion optics to the detector. Various methods for attenuating matrix effects are then reviewed and illustrated with some examples. Instead of exhaustively reviewing the literature, representative references are used to comprehensively describe the main issues, several of which are also common to ICP optical emission spectrometry.

Abstract
An overview is presented on the power and drawbacks of the relatively unfamiliar chemiluminescence-based detection technique applied in analysis by capillary electrophoresis, for determining chemically derivatized biomolecules. Examples of the most common systems are given for many series of biologically active compounds as well as for some pharmaceuticals. The most common chemiluminescent systems include the application of peroxyoxalate ester chemiluminescence, acridinium esters, luminol and derivatives, detection based on the tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(III) system, the huge potentials offered by direct oxidations-though often with still unelucidated reaction mechanisms-and the powerful area of bioluminescence techniques, revealing as well the fast developing area of microchip-based analysis employing this specific luminescence principle.

Abstract
The numerous problems posed by modern biochemistry, biology, and medicine, as well as the growing significance of genetic engineering require the application of fast and reliable methods of utmost sensitivity and selectivity for the analysis of nucleic acids. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) represent established analytical techniques for the characterization and structural elucidation of single- and double-stranded nucleic acids, ranging in size from a few nucleotides to several thousand base pairs. Although both techniques are independently applicable for nucleic acid analysis, the on-line hyphenation significantly enhances their potential for the robust and fully automable routine analysis of minute amounts of biological samples. Among the various chromatographic and mass spectrometric modes available in principle, ion-pair reversed-phase HPLC and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) have been shown to be the most suitable for the direct interfacing of liquid chromatography (LC) and MS. Instrumental setup, as well as chromatographic and mass spectrometric experimental conditions, need to be carefully selected in order to maximize the performance of the hyphenated analytical system. Applications of HPLC-ESI-MS include the characterization of oligodeoxynucleotides synthesized by solid-phase synthesis, the analysis of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides, oligonucleotide metabolites, and DNA adducts, the analysis of genomic segments specifically amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the characterization of ribonucleic acids, the sizing of double-stranded DNA restriction fragments, the genotyping of short tandem repeats (STRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the detection of mutations in nucleic acid sequences, and the sequencing of nucleic acids.

Abstract
Because of its simplicity, speed and effectiveness, solid-phase extraction (SPE) has become the preferred technique for concentration of selected analytes prior to chromatographic or electrophoretic analysis. In this review the historical development of SPE is briefly traced. Then the principles of SPE are reviewed in some detail. Numerous references are given on the format, sorbents, elution conditions, online techniques and automation with special emphasis on relatively recent developments. The principles and recent advances in solid-phase microextraction (SPME) are also reviewed. The final section on selected recent applications includes an extensive list of references to work published within the last three years. Future trends and developments are discussed briefly.

Abstract
Oligonucleotides and double stranded DNA fragments were separated in 200 microm I.D. capillary columns packed with micropellicular, octadecylated, 2.1 microm poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) particles by ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (IP-RP-HPLC). Both the length and the diameter of the connecting capillaries (150 x 0.020 mm I.D.) as well as the detection volume (3 nl) had to be kept to a minimum in order to maintain the high efficiency of this chromatographic separation system with peak widths at half height in the range of a few seconds. Three different types of frits, namely sintered silica particles, sintered octadecylsilica particles, and monolithic poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) (PS-DVB) frits were evaluated with respect to their influence on chromatographic performance. Best performance for the separation of oligonucleotides and long DNA fragments was observed with the PS-DVB frits, whereas the short DNA fragments were optimally resolved in columns terminated by octadecylsilica frits. The maximum loading capacity of 60 x 0.20 mm I.D. columns ranged from 20 fmol (7.7 ng) for a 587 base pair DNA fragment to 500 fmol (2.4 ng) for a 16-mer oligonucleotide. Lower mass- and concentration detection limits in the low femtomol and low nanomol per liter range, respectively, make capillary IP-RP-HPLC with UV absorbance detection highly attractive for the separation and characterization of minute amounts of synthetic oligonucleotides, DNA restriction fragments, and short tandem repeat sequences amplified by polymerase chain reaction.

Abstract
A selective dynamic method for the determination of fluoride in pharmaceuticals based on the integration of pervaporation and potentiometric detection in a laboratory-made module is proposed. The analyte was continuously converted into volatile trimetylfluorosilane by reaction with hexamethyldisilazane, injected into a donor stream and accepted in a basic buffer solution after pervaporation. The method thus developed has a determination range between 1.5 and 200 mg l-1, precision (expressed as R.S.D.) of 3.4%, and has been applied to the determination of fluoride in different pharmaceutical products, with yields ranging between 90.6 and 100.3%. Abstract
Fused-silica capillary columns of 200 microm inner diameter were packed with micropellicular, octadecylated, 2.3 microm poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) particles and applied to the separation of oligonucleotides by ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Oligonucleotides were eluted at 50 degrees C with gradients of 3-13% acetonitrile in 50 mM triethylammonium bicarbonate. Addition of sheath liquid to the column effluent allowed the detection of oligonucleotides by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry using full-scan data acquisition with a detectability comparable to that obtained with UV detection. The signal-to-noise ratios with different sheath liquids increased in the order isopropanol<methanol<acetonitrile. The incorporation of volatile acids or bases such as triethylamine or hexafluoroisopropanol into the sheath liquid was found to influence the charge state distribution of oligonucleotides longer than 20 nucleotide units whereas no significant effect was observed with shorter oligonucleotides. Organic acids and bases in the sheath liquid generally deteriorated the signal-to-noise ratios in the chromatograms and mass spectra mainly because of increased background noise. Only a few charge states were observed in the mass spectra of oligonucleotides because of charge state reduction due to the presence of carbonic acid in the eluent. With triethylammonium hydrogencarbonate as chromatographic eluent and acetonitrile as sheath liquid, very few cation adducts of oligonucleotides were observed in the mass spectra. However, the presence of small amounts of monopotassium adducts enabled the calculation of the charge state of multiply charged ions. With acetonitrile as sheath liquid, 710 amol of a 16-mer oligonucleotide were detected using selected ion monitoring data acquisition with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3:1. Finally, capillary ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was applied to the separation and characterization of heterooligonucleotide primers.
