EMG discharge patterns during human grip movement are task-dependent and not modulated by muscle contraction modes: a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study

Effect of hand postures and object properties on forearm muscle activities using surface electromyography

Introduction. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of hand postures and object properties on nine forearm muscle activities and their contribution using surface electromyography. Methods. Ten male university students participated in the experiment. The objects used were cylindrical and rectangular, with lengths and weights of 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm and 400, 800, 1400 and 1800 g. The experimenter told the participant to pick up the object using a particular hand posture, lift the object to approximately shoulder height and maintain this posture for 3 s. Results. The hand posture, object size and object weight greatly influenced the muscle activities, but the object shape did not. Pinching with two or three fingers yielded the greatest muscle activities with the 8-cm, 1800-g object. The extensor pollicis longus and flexor pollicis longus muscles exhibited the highest submaximal voluntary contraction. Conclusion. This study provides basic information about the specific activities of the forearm muscles and the effects of the hand postures and object properties on those activities.

Thumb performance of elderly users on smartphone touchscreen

This study investigated the relationship between thumb muscle activity and thumb operating tasks on a smartphone touchscreen in elderly users (right hand posture). Three thumb muscles were targeted in the experiment, namely, abductor pollicis brevis, abductor pollicis longus (APL) and first dorsal interosseous (FDI). The results showed that the elderly participants developed fatigue rapidly and tapped more slowly when operating on smaller buttons (diameter 3.0 mm compared with 9.0 mm) and moving in the flexion–extension (compared with adduction–abduction) orientation. Meanwhile, electromyography and perceived exertion evaluation revealed significant increases in FDI in the small button task, and results for APL were significantly greater in the flexion–extension task. This study suggests that the use of small touch-buttons and flexion–extension movement should be minimised in the handheld touchscreen interface design for elderly users.

Motor control of downward object-transport movements with precision grip by object weight

In the present study, we investigated the kinematics of object-transport movement in a downward direction using a precision grip, to elucidate how the central nervous system (CNS) takes into account object weight when making the movement, even when participants are unable to recognize the weight until they grasp the object. We found that the kinematics during transport movement were significantly changed by the object weight, even when the weight was unrecognized visually, suggesting that the CNS controls object-transport movement in a downward direction according to object weight, regardless of the visual recognizability of the weight.

An ergonomics study of thumb movements on smartphone touch screen

This study investigated the relationships between thumb muscle activity and thumb operating tasks on a smartphone touch screen with one-hand posture. Six muscles in the right thumb and forearm were targeted in this study, namely adductor pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, abductor pollicis brevis (APB), abductor pollicis longus, first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and extensor digitorum. The performance measures showed that the thumb developed fatigue rapidly when tapping on smaller buttons (diameter: 9 mm compared with 3 mm), and moved more slowly in flexion-extension than in adduction-abduction orientation. Meanwhile, the electromyography and perceived exertion values of FDI significantly increased in small button and flexion-extension tasks, while those of APB were greater in the adduction-abduction task. This study reveals that muscle effort among thumb muscles on a touch screen smartphone varies according to the task, and suggests that the use of small touch buttons should be minimised for better thumb performance.

Grip-dependent cortico-spinal excitability during grasping imagination and execution

Studies converge in indicating a substantial similarity of the rules and mechanisms underlying execution, observation and imagery of actions, along with a large overlapping of their neural substrates. Recent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have demonstrated a muscle-specific facilitation of the observer's motor system for force requirement and type of grip during grasping observation. However, whether similar fine-tuned muscle-specificity occurs even during imagination, when subjects are free to select the most convenient grip configuration, is still unknown. Here we applied TMS over the primary motor cortex and measured the corticospinal excitability (MEP) in three muscles (FDI, ADM and FDS) while subjects imagined grasping spheres of different dimensions and materials. This range of object weights and sizes (diameters) allowed subjects to freely imagine the most suitable grip configuration among several possibilities. Activation measured during grasping imagination has been also compared to that obtained during real execution (EMG recorded from the same muscles). We found that during imagination of grasping small objects, the FDI muscle was more active than the ADM and the FDS, whereas the opposite pattern was found for big objects. Imagination of medium size objects, instead, required an equal involvement of the three muscles. The same pattern was observed when subjects were asked to perform the action. This suggests that during imagination, the cortico-spinal system is modulated in a muscle-specific/grip-specific way, as if the action would be really performed. However, when force was required (i.e., for the aluminum objects), the motor activation obtained during action execution was more fine-tuned to object dimensions than the facilitation recorded during imagination, suggesting a separate control of force production.

Brain activity is similar during precision and power gripping with light force: an fMRI study

Handgrips can be broadly classified into precision and power grips. To compare central neuronal control of these tasks, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in 14 healthy right-handed volunteers, who repetitively squeezed non-flexible force transducers with a precision grip and a power grip of the dominant hand. The relative grip force levels and movement rates (0.45 Hertz) of both tasks were comparable. Peak isometric grip forces ranged between 1% and 10% of the maximum voluntary force. Reflecting the additional recruitment of extrinsic hand muscles and the higher absolute force, activation of the contralateral primary sensorimotor cortex (M1/S1) and ipsilateral cerebellum was significantly stronger during power than during precision grip. No brain areas exhibited stronger activity during the precision grip than during the power grip. The left M1/S1 and right cerebellum showed a positive linear relationship with the grip force, while the right angular gyrus and left superior frontal gyrus showed a gradual increase in activity when less force was applied. However, these force-dependent modulations of brain activity were similar for the precision and power grip tasks. No brain region was specifically activated during one task but not during the other. Activity during precision gripping did not exceed the activity associated with power gripping possibly because the precision grip task was not challenging enough to call on dexterous fine motor control.
