Variations in the soleus H-reflex as a function of activation during controlled lengthening and shortening actions

Gravity-efficient motor control is associated with contraction-dependent intracortical inhibition

In humans, moving efficiently along the gravity axis requires shifts in muscular contraction modes. Raising the arm up involves shortening contractions of arm flexors, whereas the reverse movement can rely on lengthening contractions with the help of gravity. Although this control mode is universal, the neuromuscular mechanisms that drive gravity-oriented movements remain unknown. Here, we designed neurophysiological experiments that aimed to track the modulations of cortical, spinal, and muscular outputs of arm flexors during vertical movements with specific kinematics (i.e., optimal motor commands). We report a specific drop of corticospinal excitability during lengthening versus shortening contractions, with an increase of intracortical inhibition and no change in spinal motoneuron responsiveness. We discuss these contraction-dependent modulations of the supraspinal motor output in the light of feedforward mechanisms that may support gravity-tuned motor control. Generally, these results shed a new perspective on the neural policy that optimizes movement control along the gravity axis.

Combined effect of contraction type and intensity on corticomuscular coherence during isokinetic plantar flexions

During isometric contractions, corticomuscular coherence (CMC) may be modulated along with the contraction intensity. Furthermore, CMC may also vary between contraction types due to the contribution of spinal inhibitory mechanisms. However, the interaction between the effect of the contraction intensity and of the contraction type on CMC remains hitherto unknown. Therefore, CMC and spinal excitability modulations were compared during submaximal isometric, shortening and lengthening contractions of plantar flexor muscles at 25, 50, and 70% of the maximal soleus (SOL) EMG activity. CMC was computed in the time-frequency domain between the Cz EEG electrode signal and the SOL or medial gastrocnemius (MG) EMG signals. The results indicated that beta-band CMC was decreased in the SOL only between 25 and 50-70% contractions for both isometric and anisometric contractions, but remained similar for all contraction intensities in the MG. Spinal excitability was similar for all contraction intensities in both muscles. Meanwhile a divergence of the EEG and the EMG signals mean frequency was observed only in the SOL and only between 25 and 50-70% contractions, independently from the contraction type. Collectively, these findings confirm an effect of the contraction intensity on beta-band CMC, although it was only measured in the SOL, between low-level and high-level contraction intensities. Furthermore, the current findings provide new evidence that the observed modulations of beta-band CMC with the contraction intensity does not depend on the contraction type or on spinal excitability variations.

Regulation of primary afferent depolarization and homosynaptic post-activation depression during passive and active lengthening, shortening and isometric conditions

PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine whether the modulation of primary afferent depolarization (PAD) and homosynaptic post-activation depression (HPAD) are involved in the lower efficacy of Ia-afferent-α-motoneuron transmission commonly observed during lengthening compared to isometric and shortening conditions.

METHODS

15 healthy young individuals participated in two experimental sessions dedicated to measurement in passive and active muscle states, respectively. In each session, PAD, HPAD and the efficacy of Ia-afferent-α-motoneuron transmission were evaluated during lengthening, shortening and isometric conditions. PAD was evaluated with D1 inhibition technique. Posterior tibial nerve stimulation was used to study HPAD and the efficacy of the Ia-afferent-α-motoneuron transmission through the recording of the soleus Hoffmann reflex (H reflex).

RESULTS

PAD was increased in lengthening than shortening (11.2%) and isometric (12.3%) conditions regardless of muscle state (P < 0.001). HPAD was increased in lengthening than shortening (5.1%) and isometric (4.2%) conditions in the passive muscle state (P < 0.05), while no difference was observed in the active muscle state. H reflex was lower in lengthening than shortening (- 13.2%) and isometric (- 9.4%) conditions in both muscle states (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

These results highlight the specific regulation of PAD and HPAD during lengthening conditions. However, the differences observed during passive lengthening compared to shortening and isometric conditions seem to result from an increase in Ia-afferent discharge, while the variations highlighted during active lengthening might come from polysynaptic descending pathways involving supraspinal centres that could regulate PAD mechanism.

Specific modulation of presynaptic and recurrent inhibition of the soleus muscle during lengthening and shortening submaximal and maximal contractions

The study analyzed neural mechanisms mediating spinal excitability modulation during eccentric (ECC) movement (passive muscle lengthening, submaximal, and maximal ECC contractions) as compared with concentric (CON) conditions. Twenty-two healthy subjects participated in three experiments. Experiment A (n = 13) examined D₁ presynaptic inhibition (D₁ PI) and recurrent inhibition (RI) modulation during passive muscle lengthening and shortening, by conditioning the soleus (SOL) H-reflex with common peroneal nerve submaximal and tibial nerve maximal stimulation, respectively. Experiment B (n = 13) analyzed the effect of passive muscle lengthening on D₁ PI and heteronymous Ia facilitation (HF, conditioning the SOL H-reflex by femoral stimulation). Experiment C (n = 13) focused on the effect of muscle contraction level (20%, 50%, and 100% of maximal voluntary contraction) on D₁ PI and RI. Results showed a significantly higher level of D₁ PI during passive muscle lengthening than shortening (P < 0.01), whereas RI and HF were not affected by passive muscle movement. D₁ PI and RI were both higher during ECC as compared with CON contractions (P < 0.001). However, the amount of D₁ PI was independent of the torque level, whereas RI was reduced as the torque level increased (P < 0.05). The decreased spinal excitability induced by muscle lengthening during both passive and active conditions is mainly attributed to D₁ PI, whereas RI also plays a role in the control of the specific motoneuron output during ECC contractions. Both inhibitory mechanisms are centrally controlled, but the fact that they evolve differently with torque increases, suggests a distinct supraspinal control.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Presynaptic (PI) and recurrent inhibitions (RI) were studied during passive muscle lengthening and eccentric contractions. Results indicate that the increased PI during passive muscle lengthening accounts for the decreased spinal excitability at rest. During eccentric contraction both mechanisms contribute to spinal excitability modulation. The same amount of PI was observed during eccentric contractions, while RI decreased as developed torque increased. This distinct modulation according to torque level suggests a distinct supraspinal control of these mechanisms.

Motor Cortical Excitability Changes in Preparation to Concentric and Eccentric Movements

Specific neural mechanisms operate at corticospinal levels during eccentric and concentric contractions. Here, we investigated the difference in corticospinal excitability (CSE) when preparing these two types of contraction. In this study we enrolled 16 healthy participants. They were asked to perform an instructed-delay reaction time (RT) task involving a concentric or an eccentric contraction of the right first dorsal interosseus muscle, as a response to a proprioceptive cue (Go signal) presented 1 s after a warning signal. We tested CSE at different time points ranging from 300 ms before up to 40 ms after a Go signal. CSE increased 300-150 ms before the Go signal for both contractions. Interestingly, significant changes in CSE in the time interval around the Go signal (from -150 ms to +40 ms) were only revealed in eccentric contraction. We observed a significant decrease in excitability immediately before the Go cue (Pre_50) and a significant increase 40 ms after it (Post_40) with respect to the MEPs recorded at Pre_150. Finally, CSE in eccentric contraction was lower before the Go cue (Pre_50) and greater after it (Post_40) compared to the concentric contraction. A similar result was also found in NoMov paradigm, used to disentangle the effects induced by movement preparation from those induced by the movement preparation linked to the proprioceptive cue. We could conclude that different neural mechanisms observed during concentric and eccentric contractions are mirrored with a different time-specific modulation of CSE in the preparatory phase to the movement.

Reduced corticospinal responses in older compared with younger adults during submaximal isometric, shortening, and lengthening contractions

The aim of this study was to assess differences in motor performance, as well as corticospinal and spinal responses to transcranial magnetic and percutaneous nerve stimulation, respectively, during submaximal isometric, shortening, and lengthening contractions between younger and older adults. Fifteen younger [26 yr (SD 4); 7 women, 8 men] and 14 older [64 yr (SD 3); 5 women, 9 men] adults performed isometric and shortening and lengthening dorsiflexion on an isokinetic dynamometer (5°/s) at 25% and 50% of contraction type-specific maximums. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and H reflexes were recorded at anatomical zero. Maximal dorsiflexor torque was greater during lengthening compared with shortening and isometric contractions ( P < 0.001) but was not age dependent ( P = 0.158). However, torque variability was greater in older compared with young adults ( P < 0.001). Background electromyographic (EMG) activity was greater in older compared with younger adults ( P < 0.005) and was contraction type dependent ( P < 0.001). As evoked responses are influenced by both the maximal level of excitation and background EMG activity, the responses were additionally normalized {[MEP/maximum M wave (M_max)]/root-mean-square EMG activity (RMS) and [H reflex (H)/M_max]/RMS}. (MEP/M_max)/RMS and (H/M_max)/RMS were similar across contraction types but were greater in young compared with older adults ( P < 0.001). Peripheral motor conduction times were prolonged in older adults ( P = 0.003), whereas peripheral sensory conduction times and central motor conduction times were not age dependent ( P ≥ 0.356). These data suggest that age-related changes throughout the central nervous system serve to accommodate contraction type-specific motor control. Moreover, a reduction in corticospinal responses and increased torque variability seem to occur without a significant reduction in maximal torque-producing capacity during older age. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This is the first study to have explored corticospinal and spinal responses with aging during submaximal contractions of different types (isometric, shortening, and lengthening) in lower limb musculature. It is demonstrated that despite preserved maximal torque production capacity corticospinal responses are reduced in older compared with younger adults across contraction types along with increased torque variability during dynamic contractions. This suggests that the age-related corticospinal changes serve to accommodate contraction type-specific motor control.

Recurrent inhibition is higher in eccentric compared to isometric and concentric maximal voluntary contractions

AIM

This study was designed to investigate the influence of muscle contraction type on spinal recurrent inhibition during maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) of the plantar flexor muscles.

METHODS

To that purpose, the paired Hoffmann-reflex (H-reflex) technique permitted to assess changes in recurrent pathway by comparing the modulations of test, reference and conditioning H-reflexes (H', H_ref and H₁ respectively) in the soleus muscle during isometric, concentric and eccentric MVC. Twenty-five subjects participated in an experimental session designed to assess the activity of the recurrent inhibition pathway.

RESULTS

The results indicate that both the electromyographic activity and the amplitude of H₁ normalized to the maximal M-wave (M_max ) were similar regardless of the muscle contraction type while the ratio between H' and H₁ amplitudes was significantly smaller during eccentric compared with isometric and concentric MVC. Furthermore, H_ref and H' amplitudes did not differ significantly during both isometric and concentric MVCs while H' amplitude was significantly lower than H_ref amplitude during eccentric MVC. In addition, the V/M_max ratio was similar for all muscle contraction type and greater H' amplitude was significantly correlated with greater V-wave amplitude regardless of the muscle contraction type.

CONCLUSION

Together, the current results indicate that recurrent inhibition is elevated for the soleus muscle during eccentric compared to isometric and concentric MVC. Data further suggest that the Renshaw cell activity is specifically controlled by the descending neural drive and/or peripheral neural mechanisms during eccentric MVC.

Soleus H-Reflex Inhibition Decreases During 30 s Static Stretching of Plantar Flexors, Showing Two Recovery Steps

During the period when the ankle joint is kept in a dorsiflexed position, the soleus (SOL) H-reflex is inhibited. The nature of this inhibition is not fully understood. One hypothesis is that the decrease in spinal excitability could be attributed to post-activation depression of muscle spindle afferents due to their higher firing rate during the stretch-and-hold procedure. As the static stretching position is maintained though, a partial restoration of the neurotransmitter is expected and should mirror a decrease in H-reflex inhibition. In the present study, we explored the time course of spinal excitability during a period of stretching. SOL H-reflex was elicited during a passive dorsiflexion movement, at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 21, and 25 s during maximal ankle dorsiflexion, during plantar flexion (PF) and after stretching, in 12 healthy young individuals. Measurements during passive dorsiflexion, PF and after stretching were all performed with the ankle at 100° angle; measurements during static stretching were performed at individual maximal dorsiflexion. H-reflex was strongly inhibited during the dorsiflexion movement and at maximal dorsiflexion (p < 0.0001) but recovered during PF and after stretching. During stretching H-reflex showed a recovery pattern (r = 0.836, P = 0.019) with two distinct recovery steps at 6 and 21 s into stretching. It is hypothesized that the H-reflex inhibition observed until 18 s into stretching is the result of post-activation depression of Ia afferent caused by the passive dorsiflexion movement needed to move the ankle into testing position. From 21 s into stretching, the lower inhibition could be caused by a weaker post-activation depression, inhibition from secondary afferents or post-synaptic inhibitions.

Spinal and supraspinal control of motor function during maximal eccentric muscle contraction: Effects of resistance training

Neuromuscular activity is suppressed during maximal eccentric (ECC) muscle contraction in untrained subjects owing to attenuated levels of central activation and reduced spinal motor neuron (MN) excitability indicated by reduced electromyography signal amplitude, diminished evoked H-reflex responses, increased autogenic MN inhibition, and decreased excitability in descending corticospinal motor pathways. Maximum ECC muscle force recorded during maximal voluntary contraction can be increased by superimposed electrical muscle stimulation only in untrained individuals and not in trained strength athletes, indicating that the suppression in MN activation is modifiable by resistance training. In support of this notion, maximum ECC muscle strength can be increased by use of heavy-load resistance training owing to a removed or diminished suppression in neuromuscular activity. Prolonged (weeks to months) of heavy-load resistance training results in increased H-reflex and V-wave responses during maximal ECC muscle actions along with marked gains in maximal ECC muscle strength, indicating increased excitability of spinal MNs, decreased presynaptic and/or postsynaptic MN inhibition, and elevated descending motor drive. Notably, the use of supramaximal ECC resistance training can lead to selectively elevated V-wave responses during maximal ECC contraction, demonstrating that adaptive changes in spinal circuitry function and/or gains in descending motor drive can be achieved during maximal ECC contraction in response to heavy-load resistance training.

Effects of muscle action type on corticospinal excitability and triceps surae muscle-tendon mechanics

This study investigated whether the specific motor control strategy reported for eccentric muscle actions is dependent on muscle mechanical behavior. Motor evoked potentials, Hoffman reflex (H-reflex), fascicle length, pennation angle, and fascicle velocity of soleus muscle were compared between isometric and two eccentric conditions. Ten volunteers performed maximal plantarflexion trials in isometric, slow eccentric (25°/s), and fast eccentric (100°/s) conditions, each in a different randomized testing session. H-reflex normalized by the preceding M wave (H/M) was depressed in both eccentric conditions compared with isometric ( P < 0.001), while no differences in fascicle length and pennation angle were found among conditions. Furthermore, although the fast eccentric condition had greater fascicle velocity than slow eccentric ( P = 0.001), there were no differences in H/M. There were no differences in motor evoked potential size between conditions, and silent period was shorter for both eccentric conditions compared with isometric ( P = 0.009). Taken together, the present results corroborate the hypothesis that the central nervous system has an unique activation strategy during eccentric muscle actions and suggest that sensory feedback does not play an important role in modulating these muscle actions. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The present study provides new insight into the motor control of eccentric muscle actions. It was demonstrated that task-dependent corticospinal excitability modulation does not seem to depend on sensory information processing. These findings support the hypothesis that the central nervous system has a unique activation strategy during eccentric muscle actions.

Changes in H-reflex amplitude to muscle stretch and lengthening in humans

Spinal reflex excitability is traditionally assessed to investigate neural adjustments that occur during human movement. Different experimental procedures are known to condition spinal reflex excitability. Among these, lengthening movements and static stretching the human triceps have been investigated over the last 50 years. The purpose of this review is to shed light on several apparent incongruities in terms of magnitude and duration of the reported results. In the present review dissimilarities in neuro-spinal changes are examined in relation to the methodologies applied to condition and measure them. Literature that investigated three different conditioning procedures was reviewed: passive dorsiflexion, active dorsiflexion through antagonists shortening and eccentric plantar-flexors contractions. Measurements were obtained before, during and after lengthening or stretching. Stimulation intensities and time delays between conditioning procedures and stimuli varied considerably. H-reflex decreases immediately as static stretching is applied and in proportion to the stretch degree. During dorsiflexions the inhibition is stronger with greater dorsiflexion angular velocity and at lower nerve stimulation intensities, while it is weaker if any concomitant muscle contraction is performed. Within 2 s after a single passive dorsiflexion movement, H-reflex is strongly inhibited, and this effect disappears within 15 s. Dorsiflexions repeated over 1 h and prolonged static stretching training induce long-lasting inhibition. This review highlights that the apparent disagreement between studies is ascribable to small methodological differences. Lengthening movements and stretching can strongly influence spinal neural pathways. Results interpretation, however, needs careful consideration of the methodology applied.

Dynamic Fatigue Does Not Alter Soleus H-Reflexes Conditioned by Homonymous or Heteronymous Pathways

H-reflex depression (diminution of amplitude after a conditioning stimulus) is mediated presynaptically and therefore can help distinguish central versus peripheral mechanisms of fatigue. We examined the effects of a dynamic exercise protocol on H-reflex depression using two conditioning methods: homonymous conditioning (paired-pulse tibial nerve stimulation); and heteronymous conditioning (common peroneal nerve stimulation). Ten subjects performed dynamic contractions of the soleus muscle through 30° ankle range of motion. The concentric phase required a target force of 10% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and the eccentric phase force target was 80% MVIC. Fatigue persisted for >20 min after cessation of the exercise. Compared with prefatigue values, the dynamic fatigue protocol did not increase presynaptic inhibition after either homonymous or heteronymous conditioning. Peak to peak amplitude of unconditioned H-reflexes was likewise unchanged despite a long term depression of muscle force (long duration fatigue). These results suggest that persistent fatigue after dynamic exercise is attributed to muscle changes and not altered spinal mechanisms.

Neural control of lengthening contractions

A number of studies over the last few decades have established that the control strategy employed by the nervous system during lengthening (eccentric) differs from those used during shortening (concentric) and isometric contractions. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge on the neural control of lengthening contractions. After a brief discussion of methodological issues that can confound the comparison between lengthening and shortening actions, the review provides evidence that untrained individuals are usually unable to fully activate their muscles during a maximal lengthening contraction and that motor unit activity during submaximal lengthening actions differs from that during shortening actions. Contrary to common knowledge, however, more recent studies have found that the recruitment order of motor units is similar during submaximal shortening and lengthening contractions, but that discharge rate is systematically lower during lengthening actions. Subsequently, the review examines the mechanisms responsible for the specific control of maximal and submaximal lengthening contractions as reported by recent studies on the modulation of cortical and spinal excitability. As similar modulation has been observed regardless of contraction intensity, it appears that spinal and corticospinal excitability are reduced during lengthening compared with shortening and isometric contractions. Nonetheless, the modulation observed during lengthening contractions is mainly attributable to inhibition at the spinal level.

Increased spinal reflex excitability is associated with enhanced central activation during voluntary lengthening contractions in human spinal cord injury

This study of chronic incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects investigated patterns of central motor drive (i.e., central activation) of the plantar flexors using interpolated twitches, and modulation of soleus H-reflexes during lengthening, isometric, and shortening muscle actions. In a recent study of the knee extensors, SCI subjects demonstrated greater central activation ratio (CAR) values during lengthening (i.e., eccentric) maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs), compared with during isometric or shortening (i.e., concentric) MVCs. In contrast, healthy controls demonstrated lower lengthening CAR values compared with their isometric and shortening CARs. For the present investigation, we hypothesized SCI subjects would again produce their highest CAR values during lengthening MVCs, and that these increases in central activation were partially attributable to greater efficacy of Ia-α motoneuron transmission during muscle lengthening following SCI. Results show SCI subjects produced higher CAR values during lengthening vs. isometric or shortening MVCs (all P < 0.001). H-reflex testing revealed normalized H-reflexes (maximal SOL H-reflex-to-maximal M-wave ratios) were greater for SCI than controls during passive (P = 0.023) and active (i.e., 75% MVC; P = 0.017) lengthening, suggesting facilitation of Ia transmission post-SCI. Additionally, measures of spinal reflex excitability (passive lengthening maximal SOL H-reflex-to-maximal M-wave ratio) in SCI were positively correlated with soleus electromyographic activity and CAR values during lengthening MVCs (both P < 0.05). The present study presents evidence that patterns of dynamic muscle activation are altered following SCI, and that greater central activation during lengthening contractions is partly due to enhanced efficacy of Ia-α motoneuron transmission.

Changes in H-reflex and V-waves following spinal manipulation

This study investigates whether spinal manipulation leads to neural plastic changes involving cortical drive and the H-reflex pathway. Soleus evoked V-wave, H-reflex, and M-wave recruitment curves and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in surface electromyography (SEMG) signals of the plantar flexors were recorded from ten subjects before and after manipulation or control intervention. Dependent measures were compared with 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD as post hoc test, p was set at 0.05. Spinal manipulation resulted in increased MVC (measured with SEMG) by 59.5 ± 103.4 % (p = 0.03) and force by 16.05 ± 6.16 4 % (p = 0.0002), increased V/M max ratio by 44.97 ± 36.02 % (p = 0.006), and reduced H-reflex threshold (p = 0.018). Following the control intervention, there was a decrease in MVC (measured with SEMG) by 13.31 ± 7.27 % (p = 0.001) and force by 11.35 ± 9.99 % (p = 0.030), decreased V/M max ratio (23.45 ± 17.65 %; p = 0.03) and a decrease in the median frequency of the power spectrum (p = 0.04) of the SEMG during MVC. The H-reflex pathway is involved in the neural plastic changes that occur following spinal manipulation. The improvements in MVC following spinal manipulation are likely attributed to increased descending drive and/or modulation in afferents. Spinal manipulation appears to prevent fatigue developed during maximal contractions. Spinal manipulation appears to alter the net excitability of the low-threshold motor units, increase cortical drive, and prevent fatigue.

Specific modulation of spinal and cortical excitabilities during lengthening and shortening submaximal and maximal contractions in plantar flexor muscles

This study investigated the influence of the torque produced by plantar flexor muscles on cortical and spinal excitability during lengthening and shortening voluntary contractions. To that purpose, modulations of motor-evoked potential (MEP) and Hoffmann (H) reflex were compared in the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) during anisometric submaximal and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the plantar flexor muscles. For the submaximal shortening and lengthening contractions, the target torque was set at 50% of their respective MVC force. The results indicate that the amplitudes of both MEP and H-reflex responses, normalized to the maximal M wave, were significantly ( P < 0.05) lower during lengthening compared with shortening submaximal contraction. For these two parameters, the reduction reached, respectively, 22.1 and 31.9% for the SOL and 34.5 and 29.3% for the MG. During MVC, normalized MEP and H reflex of the SOL were both reduced significantly by 19.9% ( P < 0.05) and 29.9% ( P < 0.001) during lengthening and shortening contraction, respectively, whereas no significant change ( P > 0.05) was observed for MG. In addition, the silent period in the ongoing electromyogram (EMG) activity following the MEP was significantly ( P < 0.01) briefer during lengthening than shortening contractions but did not differ ( P > 0.05) between contraction intensities and muscles. Together, these results indicate that cortical and spinal mechanisms involved in the modulation of muscle activation during shortening and lengthening contractions differ between synergistic muscles according to the torque produced. Data further document previous studies reporting that the specific modulation of muscle activation during lengthening contraction is not torque dependent.

The effects of isometric resistance training on stretch reflex induced tremor in the knee extensor muscles

This study examines the effect of 4 wk of high-intensity isometric resistance training on induced tremor in knee extensor muscles. Fourteen healthy volunteers were assigned to either the training group (n = 7) or the nontraining control group (n = 7). Induced tremor was assessed by measuring force fluctuations during anisometric contractions against spring loading, whose compliance was varied to allow for preferential activation of the short or long latency stretch reflex components. Effects of high-intensity isometric resistance training on induced tremor was assessed under two contraction conditions: relative force matching, where the relative level of activity was equal for both pre- and post-training sessions, set at 30% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), and absolute force matching, where the level of activity was set to 30% pretrained MVC. The training group experienced a 26.5% increase in MVC in contrast to the 0.8% for the control group. For relative force-matching contractions, induced tremor amplitude and frequency did not change in either the training or control group. During absolute force-matching contractions, induced tremor amplitude was decreased by 37.5% and 31.6% for the short and long components, respectively, with no accompanying change in frequency, for the training group. No change in either measure was observed in the control group for absolute force-matching contractions. The results are consistent with high-intensity isometric resistance training induced neural changes leading to increased strength, coupled with realignment of stretch reflex automatic gain compensation to the new maximal force output. Also, previous reported reductions in anisometric tremor following strength training may partly be due to changed stretch reflex behavior.

Insights into the neural control of eccentric contractions

The purpose of this brief review is to examine our current knowledge of the neural control of eccentric contractions. The review focuses on three main issues. The first issue considers the ability of individuals to activate muscles maximally during eccentric contractions. Most studies indicate that, regardless of the experimental approach (surface EMG amplitude, twitch superimposition, and motor unit recordings), it is usually more difficult to achieve full activation of a muscle by voluntary command during eccentric contractions than during concentric and isometric contractions. The second issue is related to the specificity of the control strategy used by the central nervous system during submaximal eccentric contractions. This part underscores that although the central nervous system appears to employ a single size-related strategy to activate motoneurons during the different types of contractions, the discharge rate of motor units is less during eccentric contractions across different loading conditions. The last issue addresses the mechanisms that produce this specific neural activation. This section indicates that neural adjustments at both supraspinal and spinal levels contribute to the specific modulation of voluntary activation during eccentric contractions. Although the available information on the control of eccentric contractions has increased during the last two decades, this review indicates that the exact mechanisms underlying the unique neural modulation observed in this type of contraction at spinal and supraspinal levels remains unknown and their understanding represents, therefore, a major challenge for future research on this topic.

Changes in H reflex and V wave following short-term endurance and strength training

This study examined the effects of 3 wk of either endurance or strength training on plasticity of the neural mechanisms involved in the soleus H reflex and V wave. Twenty-five sedentary healthy subjects were randomized into an endurance group ( n = 13) or strength group ( n = 12). Evoked V-wave, H-reflex, and M-wave recruitment curves, maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and time-to-task-failure (isometric contraction at 40% MVC) of the plantar flexors were recorded before and after training. Following strength training, MVC of the plantar flexors increased by 14.4 ± 5.2% in the strength group ( P < 0.001), whereas time-to-task-failure was prolonged in the endurance group (22.7 ± 17.1%; P < 0.05). The V wave-to-maximal M wave (V/Mmax) ratio increased significantly (55.1 ± 28.3%; P < 0.001) following strength training, but the maximal H wave-to-maximal M wave (Hmax/Mmax) ratio remained unchanged. Conversely, in the endurance group the V/Mmax ratio was not altered, whereas the Hmax/Mmax ratio increased by 30.8 ± 21.7% ( P < 0.05). The endurance training group also displayed a reduction in the H-reflex excitability threshold while the H-reflex amplitude on the ascending limb of the recruitment curve increased. Strength training only elicited a significant decrease in H-reflex excitability threshold, while H-reflex amplitudes over the ascending limb remained unchanged. These observations indicate that the H-reflex pathway is strongly involved in the enhanced endurance resistance that occurs following endurance training. On the contrary, the improvements in MVC following strength training are likely attributed to increased descending drive and/or modulation in afferents other than Ia afferents.

Specific modulation of corticospinal and spinal excitabilities during maximal voluntary isometric, shortening and lengthening contractions in synergist muscles

This study was designed to investigate the cortical and spinal mechanisms involved in the modulations of neural activation during lengthening compared with isometric and shortening maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs). Two muscles susceptible to different neural adjustments at the spinal level, the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG), were compared. Twelve healthy males participated in at least two experimental sessions designed to assess corticospinal and spinal excitabilities. We compared the modulation of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in response to transcranial magnetic stimulation and Hoffmann reflexes (H-reflexes) during isometric and anisometric MVCs. The H-reflex and MEP responses, recorded during lengthening and shortening MVCs, were compared with those obtained during isometric MVCs. The results indicate that the maximal amplitude of both MEP and H-reflex in the SOL were smaller (P < 0.01) during lengthening MVCs compared with isometric and shortening MVCs but similar (P > 0.05) in MG for all three muscle contraction types. The silent period that follows maximal MEPs was reduced (P < 0.01) during lengthening MVCs in the SOL but not the MG. Similar observations were obtained regardless of the initial length of the MG muscle. Collectively, the current results indicate that the relative contribution of both cortical and spinal mechanisms to the modulation of neural activation differs during lengthening MVCs and between two synergist muscles. The comparison of SOL and MG responses further suggests that the specific modulation of the corticospinal excitability during lengthening MVCs depends mainly on pre- and postsynaptic inhibitory mechanisms acting at the spinal level.

Contraction history produces task-specific variations in spinal excitability in healthy human soleus muscle

INTRODUCTION

In human movements muscles lengthen and then shorten, or occasionally shorten and then lengthen, but it is unclear whether the nature of neural activation of the initial phase influences the neural state of the subsequent phase. We examined whether contraction history modulates spinal excitability in the healthy human soleus muscle.

METHODS

Subjects performed six blocks of 10 repetitions of four muscle actions consisting of specific combinations of passive shortening (PAS), and passive lengthening (PAL), shortening contraction (SHO), and lengthening contraction (LEN); that is: (1) SHO+PAL; (2) PAS+LEN; (3) PAS+PAL; and (4) SHO+LEN.

RESULTS

Compared with baseline, the H-reflex increased in the block of 300-400 s after SHO+PAL and decreased in the block of 0-100 s after PAS+LEN and SHO+LEN.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that spinal excitability is potentiated during a muscle action preceded by muscle shortening, but it becomes depressed during a muscle action preceded by muscle lengthening.

Ipsilateral motor cortical responses to TMS during lengthening and shortening of the contralateral wrist flexors

Unilateral lengthening contractions provide a greater stimulus for neuromuscular adaptation than shortening contractions in the active and non-active contralateral homologous muscle, although little is known of the potential mechanism. Here we examined the possibility that corticospinal and spinal excitability vary in a contraction-specific manner in the relaxed right flexor carpi radialis (FCR) when humans perform unilateral lengthening and shortening contractions of the left wrist flexors at the same absolute force. Corticospinal excitability in the relaxed right FCR increased more during lengthening than shortening at 80% and 100% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Short-interval intracortical inhibition diminished during shortening contractions, and it became nearly abolished during lengthening. Intracortical facilitation lessened during shortening but increased during lengthening. Interhemispheric inhibition to the 'non-active' motor cortex diminished during shortening, and became nearly abolished during lengthening at 90% MVC. The amplitude of the Hoffman reflex in the relaxed right FCR decreased during and remained depressed for 20 s after lengthening and shortening of the left wrist flexors. We discuss the possibility that instead of the increased afferent input, differences in the descending motor command and activation of brain areas that link function of the motor cortices during muscle lengthening vs. shortening may cause the contraction-specific modulation of ipsilateral motor cortical output. In conclusion, ipsilateral motor cortex responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation are contraction-specific; unilateral lengthening and shortening contractions reduced contralateral spinal excitability, but uniquely modulated ipsilateral corticospinal excitability and the networks involved in intracortical and interhemispheric connections, which may have clinical implications.

Improvements in dynamic plantar flexor strength after resistance training are associated with increased voluntary activation and V-to-M ratio

The aim of this study was to investigate if, and via what mechanisms, resistance training of the plantar flexor muscles affects voluntary activation during maximal voluntary eccentric and concentric muscle actions. Twenty healthy subjects were randomized into a resistance training group ( n = 9) or a passive control group ( n = 11). Training consisted of 15 sessions of unilateral mainly eccentric plantar flexor exercise over a 5-wk period. During pre- and posttraining testing, dynamic plantar flexor strength was measured and voluntary activation was calculated using the twitch interpolation technique. The soleus Hoffman reflex (H-reflex) was used to assess motoneurone excitability and presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents, whereas the soleus V-wave was used to test for changes in both presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents and supraspinal inputs to the motoneurone pool. H-reflexes, V-waves, supramaximal M-waves, and twitches were evoked as the foot was moved at 5°/s through an angle of 90° during passive ankle rotations (passive H-relexes and M-waves) and during maximal voluntary concentric and eccentric plantar flexions [maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) H-reflexes, M-waves, and V-waves]. Training induced significant improvements in plantar flexor strength and voluntary activation during both concentric and eccentric maximal voluntary actions. Soleus passive and MVC H-to-M ratios remained unchanged after training, whereas the soleus V-to-M ratio was increased during both concentric and eccentric contractions after training. No changes were found in the control group for any of the parameters. The enhanced voluntary strength could be attributed partly to an increase in voluntary activation induced by eccentric training. Since the passive and MVC H-to-M ratios remained unchanged, the increase in activation is probably not due to decreased presynaptic inhibition. The increased V-to-M ratio for both action types indicates that increased voluntary drive from supraspinal centers and/or modulation in afferents other than Ia afferents may have contributed to such an increase in voluntary activation.

An enhanced level of motor cortical excitability during the control of human standing

AIM

The study examined the role of the motor cortex in the control of human standing.

METHODS

Subjects (n = 15) stood quietly with or without body support. The supported standing condition enabled subjects to stand with a reduced amount of postural sway. Peripheral electrical stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) was applied to elicit a soleus (SOL) H-reflex, or motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in the SOL and the tibialis anterior (TA). Trials were grouped based on the standing condition (i.e. supported vs. normal) as well as sway direction (i.e. forward and backward) while subjects were standing normally.

RESULTS

During normal when compared to supported standing, the SOL H-reflex was depressed (-11 +/- 4%), while the TMS-evoked MEPs from the SOL and TA were facilitated (35 +/- 11% for the SOL, 51 +/- 15% for the TA). TES-evoked SOL and TA MEPs were, however, not different between the normal and supported standing conditions. The data based on sway direction indicated that the SOL H-reflex, as well as the SOL TMS- and TES-evoked MEPs were all greater during forward when compared to backward sway. In contrast, the TMS- and TES-evoked MEPs from the TA were smaller when swaying forward as compared to backward.

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicated the presence of an enhanced cortical excitability because of the need to control for postural sway during normal standing. The increased cortical excitability was, however, unlikely to be involved in an on-going control of postural sway, suggesting that postural sway is controlled at the spinal and/or subcortical levels.

Excitability at the motoneuron pool and motor cortex is specifically modulated in lengthening compared to isometric contractions

Neural control of muscle contraction seems to be unique during muscle lengthening. The present study aimed to determine the specific sites of modulatory control for lengthening compared with isometric contractions. We used stimulation of the motor cortex and corticospinal tract to observe changes at the spinal and cortical levels. Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) and cervicomedullary MEPs (CMEPs) were evoked in biceps brachii and brachioradialis during maximal and submaximal lengthening and isometric contractions at the same elbow angle. Sizes of CMEPs and MEPs were lower in lengthening contractions for both muscles (by approximately 28 and approximately 16%, respectively; P < 0.01), but MEP-to-CMEP ratios increased (by approximately 21%; P < 0.05). These results indicate reduced excitability at the spinal level but enhanced motor cortical excitability for lengthening compared with isometric muscle contractions.

Neural control of shortening and lengthening contractions: influence of task constraints

Although the performance capabilities of muscle differ during shortening and lengthening contractions, realization of these differences during functional tasks depends on the characteristics of the activation signal discharged from the spinal cord. Fundamentally, the control strategy must differ during the two anisometric contractions due to the lesser force that each motor unit exerts during a shortening contraction and the greater difficulty associated with decreasing force to match a prescribed trajectory during a lengthening contraction. The activation characteristics of motor units during submaximal contractions depend on the details of the task being performed. Indexes of the strategy encoded in the descending command, such as coactivation of antagonist muscles and motor unit synchronization, indicate differences in cortical output for the two types of anisometric contractions. Furthermore, the augmented feedback from peripheral sensory receptors during lengthening contractions appears to be suppressed by centrally and peripherally mediated presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents, which may also explain the depression of voluntary activation that occurs during maximal lengthening contractions. Although modulation of the activation during shortening and lengthening contractions involves both supraspinal and spinal mechanisms, the association with differences in performance cannot be determined without more careful attention to the details of the task.

Effect of angular velocity on soleus and medial gastrocnemius H-reflex during maximal concentric and eccentric muscle contraction

At rest, the H-reflex is lower during lengthening than shortening actions. During passive lengthening, both soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) H-reflex amplitudes decrease with increasing angular velocity. This study was designed to investigate whether H-reflex amplitude is affected by angular velocity during concentric and eccentric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Experiments were performed on nine healthy men. At a constant angular velocity of 60 degrees /s and 20 degrees /s, maximal H-reflex and M-wave potentials were evoked at rest (i.e., H(max) and M(max), respectively) and during concentric and eccentric MVC (i.e., H(sup) and M(sup), respectively). Regardless of the muscle, H(max)/M(max) was lower during lengthening than shortening actions and the H(sup)/M(sup) ratio was higher than H(max)/M(max) during lengthening actions. Whereas no action type and angular velocity effects on the MG H(sup)/M(sup) were found, the SOL H(sup)/M(sup) was lower during eccentric than concentric MVC and this depression was increased with higher angular velocity. Our findings indicate that the depression of the H-reflex amplitude during eccentric compared to concentric MVC depends mainly on the amount of inhibition induced by lengthening action. In conclusion, H-reflex should be evoked during both passive and active dynamic trials to evaluate the plasticity of the spinal loop.

Sway-dependent modulation of the triceps surae H-reflex during standing

Previous research has shown that changes in spinal excitability occur during the postural sway of quiet standing. In the present study, it was of interest to examine the independent effects of sway position and sway direction on the efficacy of the triceps surae Ia pathway, as reflected by the Hoffman (H)-reflex amplitude, during standing. Eighteen participants, tested under two different experimental protocols, stood quietly on a force platform. Percutaneous electrical stimulation was applied to the posterior tibial nerve when the position and direction of anteroposterior (A-P) center of pressure (COP) signal satisfied the criteria for the various experimental conditions. It was found that, regardless of sway position, a larger amplitude of the triceps surae H-reflex (difference of 9–14%; P = 0.005) occurred when subjects were swaying in the forward compared with the backward direction. The effects of sway position, independent of the sway direction, on spinal excitability exhibited a trend ( P = 0.075), with an 8.9 ± 3.7% increase in the H-reflex amplitude occurring when subjects were in a more forward position. The observed changes to the efficacy of the Ia pathway cannot be attributed to changes in stimulus intensity, as indicated by a constant M-wave amplitude, or to the small changes in the level of background electromyographic activity. One explanation for the changes in reflex excitability with respect to the postural sway of standing is that the neural modulation may be related to the small lengthening and shortening contractions occurring in the muscles of the triceps surae.

Differential modulation of spinal and corticospinal excitability during drop jumps

Previously it was shown that spinal excitability during hopping and drop jumping is high in the initial phase of ground contact when the muscle is stretched but decreases toward takeoff. To further understand motor control of stretch-shortening cycle, this study aimed to compare modulation of spinal and corticospinal excitability at distinct phases following ground contact in drop jump. Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and H-reflexes were elicited at the time of the short (SLR)-, medium (MLR)-, and long (LLR, LLR(2))-latency responses of the soleus muscle (SOL) after jumps from 31 cm height. MEPs and H-reflexes were expressed relative to the background electromyographic (EMG) activity. H-reflexes were highly facilitated at SLR (172%) and then progressively decreased (MLR = 133%; LLR = 123%; LLR(2) = 110%). TMS showed no effect at SLR, MLR, and LLR, whereas MEPs were significantly facilitated at the LLR(2) (122%; P = 0.003). Background EMG was highest at LLR and lowest at LLR(2). Strong H-reflex facilitation at the beginning of the stance phase indicated significant contribution of Iotaa-afferent input to the alpha-motoneurons during this phase that then progressively declined toward takeoff. Conversely, corticospinal excitability was exclusively increased at the phase of push off (LLR(2), approximately 120 ms). It is argued that corticomotoneurons increased their excitability at LLR(2). At LLR ( approximately 90 ms), Iotaa-afferent transmission as well as corticospinal excitability was low, whereas background EMG was high. Therefore it is speculated that other sources, presumably subcortical in origin, contributed to the EMG activity at LLR in drop jumps.

Cortical and spinal adaptations induced by balance training: correlation between stance stability and corticospinal activation

AIM

To determine the sites of adaptation responsible for improved stance stability after balance (=sensorimotor) training, changes in corticospinal and spinal excitability were investigated in 23 healthy subjects.

METHODS

Neural adaptations were assessed by means of H-reflex stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and conditioning of the H-reflex by TMS (Hcond) before and after 4 weeks of balance training. All measurements were performed during stance perturbation on a treadmill. Fast posterior translations induced short- (SLR), medium- and long-latency responses (LLR) in the soleus muscle. Motor-evoked potential- (MEP) and Hcond-amplitudes as well as Hmax/Mmax ratios were determined at SLR and LLR. Postural stability was measured during perturbation on the treadmill.

RESULTS

Balance training improved postural stability. Hmax/Mmax ratios were significantly decreased at LLR. MEPs and Hcond revealed significantly reduced facilitation at LLR following training. A negative correlation between adaptations of Hcond and changes in stance stability was observed (r = -0.87; P < 0.01) while no correlation was found between stance stability and changes in Hmax/Mmax ratio. No changes in any parameter occurred at the spinally organized SLR and in the control group.

CONCLUSION

The decrease in MEP- and Hcond-facilitation implies reduced corticospinal and cortical excitability at the transcortically mediated LLR. Changes in cortical excitability were directly related to improvements in stance stability as shown by correlation of these parameters. The absence of such a correlation between Hmax/Mmax ratios and stance stability suggests that mainly supraspinal adaptations contributed to improved balance performance following training.

Changes in stretch reflexes and muscle stiffness with age in prepubescent children

Musculo-articular stiffness of the triceps surae (TS) increases with age in prepubescent children, under both passive and active conditions. This study investigates whether these changes in muscle stiffness influence the amplitude of the reflex response to muscle stretch. TS stiffness and reflex activities were measured in 46 children (7-11 yr old) and in 9 adults. The TS Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) and T reflex (tendon jerk) in response to taping the Achilles tendon were evaluated at rest and normalized to the maximal motor response (Mmax). Sinusoidal perturbations of passive or activated muscles were used to evoke stretch reflexes and to measure passive and active musculoarticular stiffness. The children's Hmax-to-Mmax ratio did not change with age and did not differ from adult values. The T-to-Mmax ratio increased with age but remained significantly lower than in adults. Passive stiffness also increased with age and was correlated with the T-to-Mmax ratio. Similarly, the children's stretch reflex and active musculoarticular stiffness were significantly correlated and increased with age. We conclude that prepubescent children have smaller T reflexes and stretch reflexes than adults, and the lower musculoarticular stiffness is mainly responsible for these smaller reflexes, as indicated by the parallel increases in reflex and stiffness.

Modulation of corticospinal excitability during lengthening and shortening contractions in the first dorsal interosseus muscle of humans

Lengthening and shortening contractions are the fundamental patterns of muscle activation underlying various movements. It is still unknown whether or not there is a muscle-specific difference in such a fundamental pattern of muscle activation. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate whether or not the relationship between lengthening and shortening contractions in the modulation of corticospinal excitability in the first dorsal interosseus (FDI) muscle is the same as that of previously tested muscles because the hand muscles are anatomically and functionally different from the other muscles. To this end, we investigated the relationship between the input-output curves of the corticospinal pathway (i.e., the relationship between the stimulus intensities vs. the area of motor-evoked potentials) during lengthening and shortening contractions in 17 healthy subjects. The shape of this relationship was sigmoidal and characterized by a plateau value, maximum slope, and threshold. The plateau value was at the same level between lengthening and shortening contractions. However, the maximum slope (P < 0.01) and threshold (P < 0.01) were significantly higher during lengthening contractions than during shortening contractions. These findings were different from the results of other muscles tested in previous studies (i.e., the soleus muscle and the elbow flexors). That is to say, the plateau value and the maximum slope during lengthening contractions were significantly lower than those during shortening contractions in previous studies. This study provides tentative evidence that the relationship between lengthening and shortening contractions in the modulation of corticospinal excitability differs between muscles, indicating that the underlying neural control is not necessarily the same even though the fundamental patterns of muscle activation are carried out.

Specific modulation of motor unit discharge for a similar change in fascicle length during shortening and lengthening contractions in humans

This study examines the effect of a change in fascicle length on motor unit recruitment and discharge rate in the human tibialis anterior during shortening and lengthening contractions that involved a similar change in torque. The dorsiflexor torque and the surface and intramuscular electromyograms (EMGs) from the tibialis anterior were recorded in eight subjects. The behaviour of the same motor unit (n=63) was compared during submaximal shortening and lengthening contractions performed at a constant velocity (10 deg s-1) with the dorsiflexor muscles over a 20 deg range of motion around the ankle neutral position. Muscle fascicle length was measured non-invasively using ultrasonography. Motor units that were active during a shortening contraction were always active during the subsequent lengthening contraction. Furthermore, additional motor units (n=18) of higher force threshold that were recruited during the shortening contraction to maintain the required torque were derecruited first during the following lengthening contraction. Although the change in fascicle length was linear (r2>0.99), and similar for both shortening and lengthening contractions, modulation of discharge rate differed during the two contractions. Compared with an initial isometric contraction at short (11.9+/-2.4 Hz) or long (11.7+/-2.2 Hz) muscle length, discharge rate increased only slightly and stayed nearly constant throughout the lengthening contraction (12.6+/-2.0 Hz; P<0.05) whereas it augmented progressively and more substantially during the shortening contraction, reaching 14.5+/-2.5 Hz (P<0.001) at the end of the movement. In conclusion, these observations indicate a clear difference in motor unit discharge rate modulation with no change in their recruitment order between shortening and lengthening contractions when performed with a similar change in muscle fascicle length and torque.

The amplitude modulation of the quadriceps H-reflex in relation to the knee joint action during walking

Previously the modulation of the quadriceps H-reflex has only been investigated in the initial part of the gait cycle, and it was suggested that the quadriceps H-reflex modulates with relative high reflex gain at heel contact and decreases during the subsequent part of stance (Dietz et al. 1990b). The objectives of the present study was to elaborate on the previous results by increasing the measurement resolution around heel contact and include additional measures in order to relate the H-reflex modulation to the mechanical function of the knee extensors throughout the gait cycle. EMG profiles were measured in quadriceps and the antagonistic hamstring muscles simultaneously with the knee joint kinematics in ten subjects during treadmill walking at preferred speed. H-reflex excitability was measured in vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) at 11 selected positions during the gait cycle. The resulting excitability curves showed a significant modulation of the quadriceps H-reflex during the gait cycle. The H-reflex amplitude increases shortly after heel contact and reflex inhibition is present in the remaining part of stance and most of the swing phase. The modulation of the quadriceps H-reflex during walking does not follow the classical pattern of reciprocal inhibition between antagonistic muscles. It is suggested that at least during the stance phase the modulation of the quadriceps H-reflex is controlled by presynaptic inhibition. The present results confirm the idea that the excitability of the quadriceps H-reflex is controlled to comply with the different mechanical demands on the muscle during the gait cycle in humans.

Evoked H-Reflex and V-Wave Responses During Maximal Isometric, Concentric, and Eccentric Muscle Contraction

This study was designed to investigate the modulations of H-reflex and V-wave responses during passive and maximal active dynamic actions. Experiments were performed on 16 healthy males [age: 24 ± 4 (SD) yr]. Maximal H-reflexes ( Hmax) and M-waves ( MmaxR) were evoked at the same muscle length during passive isometric, shortening and lengthening actions and during maximal voluntary isometric, concentric, and eccentric plantar-flexion. In all contraction types, supra-maximal stimulus intensity was used to evoke the superimposed maximal M wave ( MmaxA) and V wave ( V) of the soleus muscle. At rest, the Hmax/ MmaxR ratio was significantly reduced during lengthening with respect to isometric and shortening actions ( P < 0.05). For each action type, the ratio between H reflex superimposed to the contraction ( Hsup) and MmaxA was not different from Hmax/ MmaxR ratio. When plantar flexors were maximally voluntary activated, the Hsup/ MmaxA ratio was still lower during eccentric contraction as compared with isometric and concentric efforts (0.33 ± 0.03 vs. 0.47 ± 0.02 and 0.50 ± 0.03, P < 0.001), whereas V/ MmaxA ratios were similar for all contraction types (isometric 0.26 ± 0.02; concentric 0.23 ± 0.03, and eccentric 0.24 ± 0.02; P > 0.05). The V/ MmaxA ratio was significantly lower than Hsup/ MmaxA during isometric and concentric MVC ( P < 0.001). No difference was observed between V/ MmaxA and Hsup/ MmaxA ratios during eccentric efforts. The H-reflex modulations, present during lengthening actions, were mainly attributed to presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents and to homosynaptic postactivation depression. Results on V wave and H reflex suggest that during eccentric MVC, the spinal loop is specifically modulated by the supra-spinal centers and/or neural mechanisms at spinal level.

Conditioning Ia-afferent stimulation reduces the soleus Hoffman reflex in humans when muscle spindles are assumed to be inactive

Despite higher neural activation during active as compared to passive muscle shortening, Hoffman reflexes (H-reflexes) are similar. This may be explained by homosynaptic post-activation depression (HPAD) of Ia-afferents being present during active shortening. Accordingly, it was investigated whether conditioning electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve reduced the H-reflex less during active than passive shortening. The effects of two conditioning modes (0.2 and 1 Hz) were compared to a control mode without conditioning. H-reflexes and M-waves were elicited as the ankle passed 90 degrees with the soleus muscle undergoing passive or active (20% MVC) lengthening or shortening. Conditioning had no effect during active shortening. In contrast, during passive shortening, the H:M of the 1 Hz mode was significantly less than that of the 0.2 Hz and control modes. In lengthening, H:M was unaffected by conditioning. These findings support that HPAD reduces the synaptic efficacy of Ia-afferents during active shortening, active and passive lengthening, but not passive shortening.

Central and peripheral contributions to fatigue in relation to level of activation during repeated maximal voluntary isometric plantar flexions

This study aimed to investigate central and peripheral contributions to fatigue during repeated maximal voluntary isometric plantar flexions (MVCs). Changes in joint torque, level of activation (LOA), resting twitch amplitude (RT), electromyographic signals (EMG), and presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents were investigated during 9 bouts of 10 MVCs. MVCs lasted for 2 s and were separated by 1 s. The interval between bouts was 10 s. Electrical stimulation was applied to the tibial nerve; at rest to evoke RTs, M waves, and two (1.5-s interval) H reflexes; with the soleus EMG at 30% of that during MVC to evoke M waves and two H reflexes; and during MVCs to measure LOA. Over the nine bouts, LOA decreased by 12.6% and RT by 16.2%. EMG root mean square during MVCs remained unchanged for the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles, but it decreased for medial gastrocnemius. Peripheral fatigue (decrease in RT) was positively correlated to LOA, whereas central fatigue (decrease in LOA) was not. Depression of both H reflexes suggests that presynaptic inhibition after the first bout was partly induced by homosynaptic postactivation depression of the Ia terminal. The H-reflex-to-M-wave ratio increased with fatigue in both passive and active states, with no change in the ratio of the second H reflex to the first, thereby indicating a decrease of presynaptic inhibition during fatigue. The results indicate that both central and peripheral mechanisms contributed to the fatigue observed during repeated MVCs and that the development of peripheral fatigue was influenced by the level of voluntary activation and initial plantar flexor torque.
