Abstract
d-Glucaric acid (GA) is an aldaric acid and consists of an asymmetric acyclic sugar backbone with a carboxyl group positioned at either end of its structure (i.e., the C1 and C6 positions). The purpose of this study was to conduct a conformation analysis of flexible GA as a solution in deuterium oxide by NMR spectroscopy, based on J-resolved conformation analysis using proton-proton ((3) JHH ) and proton-carbon ((2) JCH and (3) JCH ) coupling constants, as well as nuclear overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY). The (2) JCH and (3) JCH coupling constants were measured using the J-resolved heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC) NMR technique. NOESY correlation experiments indicated that H2 and H5 were in close proximity, despite the fact that these protons were separated by too large distance in the fully extended form of the chain structure to provide a NOESY correlation. The validities of the three possible conformers along the three different bonds (i.e., C2C3, C3C4, and C4C5) were evaluated sequentially based on the J-coupling values and the NOESY correlations. The results of these analyses suggested that there were three dominant conformers of GA, including conformer 1, which was H2H3:gauche, H3H4:anti, and H4H5:gauche; conformer 2, which was H2H3:gauche, H3H4:anti, and H4H5:anti; and conformer 3, which was H2H3:gauche, H3H4: gauche, and H4H5:anti. These results also suggested that all three of these conformers exist in equilibrium with each other. Lastly, the results of the current study suggested that the conformational structures of GA in solution were 'bent' rather than being fully extended. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
The four stereoisomeric 1,5-dideoxy-1,5-iminopentitols with D-arabino-(D-lyxo-) (3), ribo- (9), L-lyxo (L-arabino-) (13) and xylo-(18) configurations were synthesized. The corresponding aldonolactones (1, 7 and 11) or aldonic acid ester (15b) having a leaving group at C-5 gave by reaction with aqueous ammonia, the 5-amino-5-deoxy-1,5-lactams, 2, 8, 12 and 17, respectively. Reduction of the lactam function using sodium borohydride/acetic or trifluoroacetic acid, or borane dimethyl sulfide complex yielded the iminopentitols. The compounds 3, 9, 13 and 18, together with the three 1,5-dideoxy-1,5-iminoheptitols 19,20 and 21 were tested for inhibition of the glycosidase activities present in an extract from human liver. Compound 18 was a potent and 19 a moderately good inhibitor of beta-glucosidase. Compound 3 together with 19, 20 and 21, all having D-arabino-configuration at the hydroxy-substituted carbon atoms, were good inhibitors of alpha-L-fucosidase.

Abstract
The crystal structures of L-rhamnono-1,4-lactone (1) and L-mannono-1,4-lactone (2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Pertinent crystal data are as follows: for 1, orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 4.8829(2), b = 10.9088(8), c = 13.9758(9) A, V = 734.7(1) A3, Dc = 1.610 g cm-3, Z = 4, R = 0.028 and Rw = 0.035 for 1586 reflections. The lactone ring of 1 adopts an envelope conformation, E3, slightly distorted toward 2T3, with psi = 103.1(7) degrees and q = 0.38(3) A, whereas the lactone ring of 2 adopts a perfect envelope E3 conformation, with psi = 106.6(4) degrees and q = 0.42(4) A. Molecules of 1 and 2 are linked in their crystals through a three dimensional network of O-H ... H hydrogen-bonding interactions that involves all hydroxyl groups as well as the carbonyl oxygen atom.
