Abstract
beta-Glycosides of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucopyranose were synthesised, using either 7-methoxycarbonyl-3,6-dioxa-1-heptanol or 8-azido-3,6-dioxa-1-octanol. Selective beta-lactosylation of 7-methoxycarbonyl-3,6-dioxaheptyl 2-acetamido-3-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside with hepta-O-acetyl-lactosyl-trichloroacetimidate, followed by beta-galactosylation of the secondary hydroxyl group with O-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl)trichloroacetimida te, catalytic hydrogenolysis, and O-deacetylation, gave 7-methoxycarbonyl-3,6-dioxaheptyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-6-O-(4-O-beta-D- galactopyranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Selective beta-lactosylation of 8-azido-3,6-dioxaoctyl 2-acetamido-3-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside with hepta-O-acetyl-lactosyl bromide in the presence of silver triflate, followed by condensation with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl bromide in the presence of silver triflate, catalytic hydrogenolysis, and O-deacetylation, gave 8-azido-3,6-dioxaoctyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-6-O-(4-O-beta-D- galactopyranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside.

Abstract
Glycoconjugates containing the disaccharide unit GlcNAc beta 1 leads to 3Gal beta were suggested as receptors for pneumococci adhering to human pharyngeal epithelial cells. The receptor activity was detected both by inhibition of adhesion by an excess of free oligosaccharide and by induction or increase of adhesion after coating of target cells with glycolipid. Studies with free natural and synthetic oligosaccharides identified the disaccharide GlcNAc beta 1 leads to 3Gal beta as one critical binding site. The specificity of recognition was shown inter alia by the lack of inhibitory activity of GlcNAc beta 1 leads to 4Gal beta, which differs only in the linkage of the two sugars. Specific interference with pneumococcal adhesion by administration of soluble receptor sugar may improve our understanding of the role of adhesion in vivo.

Abstract
p-Nitrophenyl 2-acetamido-3,6-di-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside was condensed with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzyl-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl bromide, the product deprotected, and the disaccharide glycoside converted into p-trifluoroacetamidophenyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-beta- D-glucopyranoside. p-Nitrophenyl 3-O-benzoyl-4,6-di-O-benzylidene-alpha-D-mannopyranoside was condensed with 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-phthalimido-beta-D-glucopyranosyl bromide, and the product was deprotected, to yield p-nitrophenyl 2-O-(2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-alpha-D-mannopyranoside. p-Nitrophenyl 2-acetamido-3,4-di-O-benzoyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside was condensed with 2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-alpha-L-fucopyranosyl bromide, and, after reduction, trifluoroacetylation, and deprotection, p-trifluoroacetamidophenyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-6-O-alpha-L-fucopyranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside was obtained.

Abstract
The repeating disaccharide-dipeptide units of the bacterial, cell-wall peptidoglycan, one being O-(N-acetyl-beta-muramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine)-(1 leads to 4)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose, and the other, O-(2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucosyl)-(1 leads to 4)-N-acetyl-muramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, have been synthesized. Some carbohydrate analogs, such as O-(N-acetyl-beta-muramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine)-(1 leads to 4)-N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, O-beta-D-glucosyl-(1 leads to 4)-N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, and O-(6-acetamido-6-deoxy-beta-D-glucosyl)-(1 leads to 4)-N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, were also synthesized. Their immunoadjuvant activities were examined in guinea-pigs.

Abstract
2-Acetamido-2-deoxy-4- and -6-O-(D-2-propanoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine)-D-glucopyranose, 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-3-O-(D-2-propanoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine)-D-allopyranose, -D-gulopyranose, -D-galactopyranose, -D-mannopyranose, and -L-idopyranose, and 3-O-(D-2-propanoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine)-D- and -L-glucopyranose were synthesized, in order to clarify the structural requirements for the immunoadjuvant activity of the carbohydrate moiety in N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine. Immunoadjuvant activity of the N-acetylmuramoyl-dipeptide analogs was examined in guinea-pigs.

Abstract
2-Methyl-[2-acetamido-4-O-acetyl-6-O-benzyl-3-O-(2-butenyl)-1,2-dideoxy-alpha-D-glucopyrano]-[2,1-d]-2-oxazoline (2), a glycosylating agent in which the three hydroxyl groups are blocked with protecting groups of differing "persistence", is of utility in the synthesis of oligosaccharides containing highly branched 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucosyl residues, and it was synthesized in a ten-step sequence from 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose via allyl 2-acetamido-4,6-O-benzylidene-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3). Alkylation of 3 with 2-butenyl (crotyl) bromide, hydrolysis of the benzylidene acetal group, benzylation of the 6-hydroxyl group, and acetylation of the 4-hydroxyl group afforded allyl 2-acetamido-4-O-acetyl-6-O-benzyl-3-O-(2-butenyl)-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside(10). Treatment of 10 with chlorotris(tri-phenylphosphine)rhodium(I) gave mainly the corresponding 1-propenyl beta-glycoside, which was converted into oxazoline 2 by the action of mercuric chloride-mercuric oxide in acetonitrile. Glycosylation of benzyl 2-acetamido-3,6-di-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranoside with 2, and subsequent O-deacetylation at O-4' gave a glycosyl acceptor, benzyl 2-acetamido-4-O-[2-acetamido-6-O-benzyl-3-O-(2-butenyl) -2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-3,6-di-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranoside .

Abstract
Controlled, partial benzylation of allyl 2-acetamido-3-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranoside gave a mixture of the 3,4-di-, 3,6-di- (15), and 3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl derivatives, the major product being 15. Condensation of 15 with 2-methyl-(3,4,6-tri-O-acetul-1,2-dideoxy-alpha-D-glucopyrano)-[2,1-d]-2-oxazoline gave a disaccharide which, after purification, removal of the allyl group, and hydrogenolysis of the benzyl substituents, gave 2-acetamido-4-O-(2-acetamido-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-i-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranose. This compound was further converted into di-N-acetyl-hexa-O-acetylchitobiose by acetylation, or into 2-methyl-[4-O-(2-acetamido-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-3,6-di-O-acetyl-1,2-di-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyrano]-[2,1-d]-2-oxazoline, a starting material for the preparation of di-N-acetyl-alpha-chitobiosyl phsophate.

Abstract
Condensation of 4,6-di-O-acetyl-2,3-O-carbonyl-alpha-D-mannopyranosyl bromide with 2-amino-2-N,3-O-carbonyl-5.6-O-isopropylidene-D-glucose diethyl acetal gave, unexpectedly, 2-amino-2-N,3-O-carbonyl-2-deoxy-4-O-(4,6-di-O-acetyl-2,3-O-carbonyl-alpha-D-mannopyranosyl)-5,6-O-isopropylidene-D-glucose diethyl acetal, futher transformed, by de-esterification followed by acetylation, into the previously known 2-amino-2-N,3-O-carbonyl-2-deoxy-5,6-O-isopropylidene-4-O-alpha-D-mannopyranosyl-D-glucose diethyl acetal and its tetra-O-acetyl derivative. Benzyl 2-acetamido-3,6-di-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside was condensed with 2-O-acetyl-3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl bromide to give benzyl 2-acetamido-4-O-(2-O-acetyl-3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-3,6-di-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Removal of the 2-O-acetyl group, followed by oxidation with acetic anhydridedimethyl sulfoxide, gave a beta-D-arabino-hexosid-2-ulose (25). After reduction with sodium borohydride, removal of the benzyl groups gave crystalline 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-beta-D-mannopyranosyl-D-glucose (27). The anomeric configuration of the glycosidic linkage was ascertained by comparison with the alpha-D-linked disaccharide.
