A modular LHC built on the DNA three-way junction

A light-harvesting complex composed of a π-stacked multichromophoric array in a DNA three-way junction is described. The modular design allows for a ready exchange of non-covalently attached energy acceptors.

Microstructural reorganization and cargo release in pyrene urethane methacrylate random copolymer hollow capsules

We report the synthesis of polymer microcapsules by direct one-pot free radical random copolymerization approach. Urethane methacrylate comb monomers having pendant pyrene (Py) and 3-pentadecyl phenol (PDP) units were copolymerized in a random manner using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as free radical initiator in dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent. These copolymers and corresponding homopolymers spontaneously self-organized into microspheres upon drop casting from solvents like DMF and tetrahydrofuran (THF). Stable microspheres were obtained in water by dialyzing THF solution of the polymers against water in dialysis bags with molecular weight cutoff of ∼2000. The hollow nature of the spheres was confirmed by rhodamine B (RhB) encapsulation followed by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) based fluorescence emission from RhB upon exciting pyrene. The microenvironment inside the capsule was probed by following the I(1)/I(3) ratio of pyrene emission as well as RhB release as a function of temperature. The RhB encapsulated in the pyrene homopolymer PIHP-100Py capsules experienced strong donor-acceptor interaction and did not undergo complete release even at high temperature (85 °C). The encapsulated RhB from the copolymers with low pyrene incorporation was released almost fully upon heating beyond 50 °C. Pyrene moieties in the PIHP-100Py were shielded from surrounding water and experienced a hydrophobic environment, whereas in the low pyrene incorporated copolymer the PDP units were better shielded from the hydrophilic environment. This work represents a simple approach to produce polymer hollow capsules, and the varying pyrene incorporation was used to trace the microenvironment inside the capsules.

Generation of phosphorescent triplet states via photoinduced electron transfer: energy and electron transfer dynamics in Pt porphyrin-Rhodamine B dyads

Control over generation and dynamics of excited electronic states is fundamental to their utilization in all areas of technology. We present the first example of multichromophoric systems in which emissive triplet states are generated via a pathway involving photoinduced electron transfer (ET), as opposed to local intrachromophoric processes. In model dyads, PtP-Ph(n)-pRhB(+) (1-3, n = 1-3), comprising platinum(II) meso-tetraarylporphyrin (PtP) and Rhodamine B piperazine derivative (pRhB(+)), linked by oligo-p-phenylene bridges (Ph(n)), upon selective excitation of pRhB(+) at a frequency below that of the lowest allowed transition of PtP, room-temperature T(1)→S(0) phosphorescence of PtP was observed. The pathway leading to the emissive PtP triplet state includes excitation of pRhB(+), ET with formation of the singlet radical pair, intersystem crossing within that pair, and subsequent radical recombination. Because of the close proximity of the triplet energy levels of PtP and pRhB(+), reversible triplet-triplet (TT) energy transfer between these states was observed in dyads 1 and 2. As a result, the phosphorescence of PtP was extended in time by the long decay of the pRhB(+) triplet. Observation of ET and TT in the same series of molecules enabled direct comparison of the distance attenuation factors β between these two closely related processes.

Spectroscopy behavior of diiodofluorescein and tetrabromofluorescein

The luminescence behavior of diiodofluorescein (DIF) and tetrabromofluorescein (TBF) have been investigated including the solid surface room temperature phosphorescence (SS-RTP) and the room temperature fluorescence (RTF). The luminescence intensities of the two compounds are strongest in alkaline solution. RTP lifetime of the two compounds are in the range of 130-140 ms. The RTP and RTF polarization was in the range of 0.01-0.05. The two analytical methods--SS-RTP and RTF, of the two compounds have been established.
