Positron lifetime in supramolecular gamma- and delta-cyclodextrin–C60 and –C70 compounds

Templated Enzymatic Synthesis of δ-Cyclodextrin

While α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrin (CD) are ubiquitous hosts employed by supramolecular chemists, δ-CD (formed from nine α-1,4-linked glucopyranose units) has received very little attention. α-, β-, and γ-CD are the major products of the enzymatic breakdown of starch by cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase), but δ-CD forms only transiently in this reaction, as a minor component of a complex mixture of linear and cyclic glucans. In this work, we show how δ-CD can be synthesized in unprecedented yields by employing a bolaamphiphile template in an enzyme-mediated dynamic combinatorial library of cyclodextrins. NMR spectroscopy studies revealed that δ-CD can thread up to three bolaamphiphiles forming [2]-, [3]-, or [4]-pseudorotaxanes, depending on the size of the hydrophilic headgroup and the length of the alkyl chain axle. Threading of the first bolaamphiphile occurs in fast exchange on the NMR chemical shift time scale, while subsequent threading occurs in slow exchange. To extract quantitative information for 1:2 and 1:3 binding events occurring in mixed exchange regimes, we derived equations for nonlinear curve fitting that take into consideration both the chemical shift changes for species in fast exchange and the integrals for species in slow exchange to determine K_a1, K_a2, and K_a3. Template T1 could be used to direct the enzymatic synthesis of δ-CD due to the cooperative formation of a 1:2 complex─the [3]-pseudorotaxane δ-CD·T1₂. Importantly, T1 is recyclable. It can be readily recovered from the enzymatic reaction by precipitation and reused in subsequent syntheses enabling preparative-scale synthesis of δ-CD.

Mechanochemistry of fullerenes and related materials

The low or lack of solubility of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene/graphite in organic solvents and water severely hampers the study of their chemical functionalizations and practical applications. Covalent and noncovalent functionalizations of fullerenes and related materials via mechanochemistry seem appealing to tackle these problems. In this review article, we provide a comprehensive coverage on the mechanochemical reactions of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphite, including dimerizations and trimerizations, nucleophilic additions, 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions, Diels-Alder reactions, [2 + 1] cycloadditions of carbenes and nitrenes, radical additions, oxidations, etc. It is intriguing to find that some reactions of fullerenes can only proceed under solvent-free conditions or undergo different reaction pathways from those of the liquid-phase counterparts to generate completely different products. We also present the application of the mechanical milling technique to complex formation, nanocomposite formation and enhanced hydrogen storage of carbon-related materials.

A molecular dynamics study of the inclusion complexes of C60 with some cyclodextrins

The strongly hydrophobic C(60) fullerene is a carbon allotrope of huge interest in materials science and in pharmaceutical chemistry that can be solubilized in water either by extensive chemical functionalization or by inclusion in appropriate carriers such as the cyclodextrins with formation of host-guest complexes. Here we report a molecular dynamics study of the complexes formed in solution by C(60) with gamma- and delta-cyclodextrins. The most stable host-guest complex stoichiometry is determined to be 2:1 through simulations in vacuo and in explicit water by the stepwise addition of the cyclodextrins to C(60). No a priori assumption about the inclusion stoichiometry and geometry is made. The equilibrium fluctuations of the complexes that can affect the system stability are also investigated within the molecular dynamics runs.

gamma-Cyclodextrin: a review on enzymatic production and applications

Cyclodextrins are cyclic alpha-1,4-glucans that are produced from starch or starch derivates using cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase). The most common forms are alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrins. This mini-review focuses on the enzymatic production, unique properties, and applications of gamma-cyclodextrin as well as its difference with alpha- and beta-cyclodextrins. As all known wild-type CGTases produce a mixture of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrins, the obtaining of a CGTase predominantly producing gamma-cyclodextrin is discussed. Recently, more economic production processes for gamma-cyclodextrin have been developed using improved gamma-CGTases and appropriate complexing agents. Compared with alpha- and beta-cyclodextrins, gamma-cyclodextrin has a larger internal cavity, higher water solubility, and more bioavailability, so it has wider applications in many industries, especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
