Photon echo pulse sequences with femtosecond shaped laser pulses as a vehicle for molecule-based quantum computation

Second-Order Photoinduced Reflectivity for Retrieval of the Dynamics in Plasmonic Nanostructures

Measuring the change in reflectivity (ΔR) using the traditional pump-probe approach can monitor photoinduced ultrafast dynamics in matter, yet relating these dynamic to physical processes for complex systems is not unique. By applying a simple modification to the classical pump-probe technique, we simultaneously measure both the first and second order of ΔR. These additional data impose new constraints on the interpretation of the underlying ultrafast dynamics. In the first application of the approach, we probe the dynamics induced by a pump laser on the local-surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in gold nanoantennas. Measurements of ΔR over several picoseconds and a wide range of probe wavelengths around the LSPR peak are followed by data fitting using the two-temperature model. The constraints, imposed by the second-order data, lead us to modify the model and force us to include the contribution of nonthermalized electrons in the early stages of the dynamics.

Femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering polarization beat spectroscopy of I2–Xe complex in solid krypton

Time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering (CARS) measurements are carried out to study the interaction between xenon atom and iodine molecule in a solid krypton matrix. Interference between the CARS polarizations of the "free" and complexed iodine molecules is observed, while the quantum beats of the complex are not detected due to low concentration. Vibrational analysis based on the polarization beats yields accurate molecular constants for the I2-Xe complex. The harmonic frequency of the I2-Xe complex is found to be redshifted by 0.90 cm-1 when compared to the free I2, whereas the anharmonicity is approximately the same. The dephasing rate of the complex is found to be somewhat higher than that of the free iodine molecule in solid Kr, showing that the complexation affects dephasing, although not dramatically. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to find the conformation of the complex, and wave packet simulations are used to reproduce the CARS signal to confirm the assignments of the observed beatings as quantum and polarization beats. The results show that the polarization beats are a useful tool for investigating weak interactions in condensed phase.

Systematic Control of Nonlinear Optical Processes Using Optimally Shaped Femtosecond Pulses

This article reviews experimental efforts to control multiphoton transitions using shaped femtosecond laser pulses, and it lays out the systematic study being followed by us for elucidating the effect of phase on nonlinear optical laser-molecule interactions. Starting with a brief review of nonlinear optics and how nonlinear optical processes depend on the electric field inducing them, a number of conclusions can be drawn directly from analytical solutions of the equations. From a Taylor expansion of the phase in the frequency domain, we learn that nonlinear optical processes are affected only by the second- and higher-order terms. This simple result has significant implications on how pulse-shaping experiments are to be designed. If the phase is allowed to vary arbitrarily as a continuous function, then an infinite redundancy that arises from the addition of a linear phase function across the spectrum with arbitrary offset and slope could prevent us from carrying out a closed-loop optimization experiment. The early results illustrate how the outcome of a nonlinear optical transition depends on the cooperative action of all frequencies in the bandwidth of a laser pulse. Maximum constructive or destructive interference can be achieved by programming the phase using only two phase values, 0 and pi. This assertion has been confirmed experimentally, where binary phase shaping (BPS) was shown to outperform other alternative functions, sometimes by at least on order of magnitude, in controlling multiphoton processes. Here we discuss the solution of a number of nonlinear problems that range from narrowing the second harmonic spectrum of a laser pulse to optimizing the competition between two- and three-photon transitions. This Review explores some present and future applications of pulse shaping and coherent control.

Quantum computing by an optimal control algorithm for unitary transformations

Quantum computation is based on implementing selected unitary transformations representing algorithms. A generalized optimal control theory is used to find the driving field that generates a prespecified unitary transformation. The approach is independent of the physical implementation of the quantum computer and it is illustrated for one and two qubit gates in model molecular systems, where only part of the Hilbert space is used for computation.
