Abstract
In this work, simultaneous global optimization of geometry and total spin of small iron clusters Fen (3 ≤ n ≤ 40) is assessed using Simulated Annealing (SA) simulations with forces calculated at the DFT-based Tight-Binding (DFTB) level of theory. In order to optimize the total spin, the occupancies of α and β densities were allowed to relax at each SA step, resulting in a continuous variation of the total spin along the trajectory. The behavior and performance of the procedure were investigated running two series of 10 independent "long" molecular dynamics simulations and one series of 100 independent "short" simulations. Cluster structures optimized with the assessed methodology reproduced geometries and magnetic moments reported in a previous work very well where multiple fixed total spin and geometries of iron clusters were individually probed, and for some clusters, more stable global minima were found. Other properties such as binding energies and second energy differences were also calculated in order to compare with previously reported theoretical and experimental values. The few mismatches were found to be driven by quasi degenerated ground states with different magnetic moments or by states with crossing free energies at high temperatures.

Abstract
The advantages of gas-phase synthesis of nanoparticles in terms of size control and flexibility in choice of materials is well known. There is increasing interest in synthesizing multi-element nanoparticles in order to optimize their performance in specific applications, and here, the flexibility of material choice is a key advantage. Mixtures of almost any solid materials can be manufactured and in the case of core-shell particles, there is independent control over core size and shell thickness. This review presents different methods of producing multi-element nanoparticles, including the use of multiple targets, alloy targets and in-line deposition methods to coat pre-formed cores. It also discusses the factors that produce alloy, core-shell or Janus morphologies and what is possible or not to synthesize. Some applications of multi-element nanoparticles in medicine will be described.

Abstract
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the (FeC)n (n = 1–8) clusters are studied using the unbiased CALYPSO structure search method and density functional theory. A combination of the PBE functional and 6–311 + G* basis set is used for determining global minima on potential energy surfaces of (FeC)n clusters. Relatively stabilities are analyzed via computing their binding energies, second order difference and HOMO-LUMO gaps. In addition, the origin of magnetic properties, spin density and density of states are discussed in detail, respectively. At last, based on the same computational method, the structures, magnetic properties and density of states are systemically investigated for the 3d (V, Cr, Mn and Co) atom doped (FeC)8 cluster.

Abstract
Cobalt-benzene cluster ions of the form Co3(bz)n+ (n = 0-3) were produced in the gas phase, mass-selected, and cooled in a cryogenic ion trap held at 3-4 K. To explore ligand effects on cluster magnetic moments, these species were investigated with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy. XMCD spectra yield both the spin and orbital angular momenta of these clusters. Co3+ has a spin magnetic moment of μS = 6 μB and an orbital magnetic moment of μL = 3 μB. Co3(bz)+ and Co3(bz)2+ complexes were found to have spin and orbital magnetic moments identical to the values for ligand-free Co3+. However, coordination of the third benzene to form Co3(bz)3+ completely quenches the high spin state of the system. Density functional theory calculations elucidate the spin states of the Co3(bz)n+ species as a function of the number of attached benzene ligands, explaining the transition from septet to singlet for n = 0 → 3.

Abstract
We present size dependent spin and orbital magnetic moments of cobalt (Con (+), 8 ≤ n ≤ 22), iron (Fen (+), 7 ≤ n ≤ 17), and nickel cluster (Nin (+), 7 ≤ n ≤ 17) cations as obtained by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy of isolated clusters in the gas phase. The spin and orbital magnetic moments range between the corresponding atomic and bulk values in all three cases. We compare our findings to previous XMCD data, Stern-Gerlach data, and computational results. We discuss the application of scaling laws to the size dependent evolution of the spin and orbital magnetic moments per atom in the clusters. We find a spin scaling law "per cluster diameter," ∼n(-1/3), that interpolates between known atomic and bulk values. In remarkable contrast, the orbital moments do likewise only if the atomic asymptote is exempt. A concept of "primary" and "secondary" (induced) orbital moments is invoked for interpretation.

Abstract
For reliable and efficient inclusion of electron-electron correlation effects in nanosystems we formulate a combined density functional theory/nonhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) approach which employs an approximate iterated perturbation theory impurity solver. We further apply the method to examine the size-dependent magnetic properties of iron nanoparticles containing 11-100 atoms. We show that for the majority of clusters the DFT+DMFT solution is in very good agreement with experimental data, much better compared to the DFT and DFT+U results. In particular, it reproduces the oscillations in magnetic moment with size as observed experimentally. We thus demonstrate that the DFT+DMFT approach can be used for accurate and realistic description of nanosystems containing about hundred atoms.

Abstract
We have investigated the magnetic properties of low-indexed iron surfaces and the influence of the chemical environment on these properties. We have considered the (1 0 0), (1 1 0), (1 1 1), (2 1 1) and (3 1 0) surfaces, both, bare and with the presence of adsorbates. These were chosen to mimic realistic chemical synthesis environments, being H, Cl, HCl, NH3, NH4Cl, or CH3COOH. We have found an increased magnetization at all bare surfaces. Upon H adsorption the magnetization is generally reduced, but still above the bulk value. All other ligands and their dissociated parts alter the magnetic properties of the surfaces only weakly. Our calculations do not indicate that ligands are responsible for experimental observations of Fe nanoparticles with average magnetizations below the bulk value.

Abstract
We explore, within the density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation to exchange and correlation, the map of spin isomers of the cationic Fe13(+) cluster in connection with recent X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy experiments [M. Niemeyer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2012, 108, 057201] which showed an anomalous low magnetic moment per number of 3d holes in this cluster. We systematically explore the low-lying magnetic excitations and correlate them with structural rearrangements and stability indicators. We obtain the observed low magnetic moment per 3d hole as the ground state of Fe13(+) and we demonstrate that, as supposed by the experimentalists, the cluster undergoes a magnetic transition from a ferromagnetic-like configuration to an antiferromagnetic-like one upon ionization. We unravel this unexpected magnetic behavior showing that it is concomitant with a Th-deformation of the icosahedral structure together with the electronic filling of this particular iron cluster. The spin-orbit interaction preserves this magnetic configuration which is essentially due to the spin. Our computed magnetic anisotropy energy supports the experimental interpretation of the cluster as fluxional due to the very weak coupling of the magnetic moment to an easy axis.

Abstract
Magnetic spin and orbital moments of size-selected free iron cluster ions Fe{n}{+} (n=3-20) have been determined via x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Iron atoms within the clusters exhibit ferromagnetic coupling except for Fe{13}{+}, where the central atom is coupled antiferromagnetically to the atoms in the surrounding shell. Even in very small clusters, the orbital magnetic moment is strongly quenched and reduced to 5%-25% of its atomic value while the spin magnetic moment remains at 60%-90%. This demonstrates that the formation of bonds quenches orbital angular momenta in homonuclear iron clusters already for coordination numbers much smaller than those of the bulk.

Abstract
The results of the investigation of the structural and magnetic (static and dynamic) properties of an assembly of metallic Fe nanoparticles synthesized by an organometallic chemical method are described. These nanoparticles are embedded in a polymer, monodisperse, with a diameter below 2 nm, which corresponds to a number of around 200 atoms. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure and Mössbauer spectrum are characteristic of metallic Fe. The structural studies by wide angle X-ray scattering indicate an original polytetrahedral atomic arrangement similar to that of β-Mn, characterized by a short-range order. The average magnetic moment per Fe atom is raised to 2.59 µ(B) (for comparison, bulk value of metallic Fe: 2.2 µ(B)). Even if the spontaneous magnetization decreases rapidly as compared to bulk materials, it remains enhanced even up to room temperature. The gyromagnetic ratio measured by ferromagnetic resonance is of the same order as that of bulk Fe, which allows us to conclude that the orbital and spin contributions increase at the same rate. A large magnetic anisotropy for metallic Fe has been measured up to (3.7 ± 1.0)·10(5) J/m(3). Precise analysis of the low temperature Mössbauer spectra, show a broad distribution of large hyperfine fields. The largest hyperfine fields display the largest isomer shifts. This indicates a progressive increase of the magnetic moment inside the particle from the core to the outer shell. The components corresponding to the large hyperfine fields with large isomer shifts are indeed characteristic of surface atoms.

Abstract
The adsorption of H2 on a series of gas-phase transition metal (scandium, vanadium, iron, cobalt, and nickel) clusters containing up to 20 metal atoms is studied using IR-multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy complemented with density functional theory based calculations. Comparison of the experimental and calculated spectra gives information on hydrogen-bonding geometries. The adsorption of H2 is found to be exclusively dissociative on Sc(n)O+, V(n)+, Fe(n)+, and Co(n)+, and both atomic and molecularly chemisorbed hydrogen is present in Ni(n)H(m)+ complexes. It is shown that hydrogen adsorption geometries depend on the elemental composition as well as on the cluster size and that the adsorption sites are different for clusters and extended surfaces. In contrast to what is observed for extended metal surfaces, where hydrogen has a preference for high coordination sites, hydrogen can be both 2- or 3-fold coordinated to cationic metal clusters.

Abstract
Magnetic moments of bare cobalt clusters Co(n) (n=7-32) and benzene-capped cobalt clusters Co(n)(bz)(m) have been measured at temperatures ranging from 54 to 150 K using a molecular beam deflection method. It was observed that Co(12-32) produced at temperatures greater than approximately 100 K display high-field-seeking behavior at all temperatures in the range investigated, indicating that they are superparamagnetic species. At temperatures below approximately 100 K, the field-on beam profiles of Co(7-11) and some larger clusters displayed substantial symmetric broadening, indicating that some fraction of the clusters in the beam were no longer superparamagnetic, but rather were in a blocked (locked-moment) state. In the superparamagnetic regime (T=150 K) Co(n) clusters in the n=7-32 size range were found to possess per-atom moments ranging from 1.96+/-0.04 micro(b)(Co(24)) to 2.53+/-0.04 micro(b)(Co(16)), significantly above the bulk value of 1.72 micro(b). Locked-moment isomers were found to display moments of approximately 1 micro(b) per atom. Cobalt clusters containing a layer of adsorbed benzene molecules were found to possess significantly lower moments per cobalt atom than the corresponding bare cobalt clusters.

Abstract
Absolute cross sections for NO chemisorption, NO decomposition, and cluster dissociation in the collision of a nitrogen monoxide molecule, NO, with cluster ions Con+ and ConH+ (n=2-5) were measured as a function of the cluster size, n, in a beam-gas geometry in a tandem mass spectrometer. Size dependency of the cross sections and the change of the cross sections by introduction of H to Con+ (effect of H-introduction) are explained by a statistical model based on the RRK theory, with the aid of the energetics obtained by a DFT calculation. It was found that the reactions are governed by the energetics rather than dynamics. For instance, Co3+ does not react appreciably with NO because the reactions are endothermic, while Co3H+ does because the reaction becomes exothermic by the H-introduction.
