Dissociation dynamics and stability of cyclopentoxy and cyclopentoxide

Compact Bases for Vibronic Coupling in Spectral Simulations: The Photoelectron Spectrum of Cyclopentoxide in the Full 39 Internal Modes

We report an algorithm to automatically generate compact multimode vibrational bases for the Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum (KDC) vibronic coupling wave function used in spectral simulations of moderate-sized molecules. As a full quantum method, the size of the vibronic expansion grows exponentially with respect to the number of vibrational modes, necessitating compact bases for moderate-sized systems. The problem of generating such a basis consists of two parts: one is the choice of vibrational normal modes, and the other is the number of phonons allowed in each mode. A previously developed final-state-biased technique addresses the former part, and this work focuses on the latter part: proposing an algorithm for generating an optimal phonon distribution. By virtue of this phonon distribution, compact and affordable bases can be automatically generated for systems with on the order of 15 atoms. Our algorithm is applied to determine the nonadiabatic photoelectron spectrum of cyclopentoxide in the full 39 internal modes.

Construction of Quasi-diabatic Hamiltonians That Accurately Represent ab Initio Determined Adiabatic Electronic States Coupled by Conical Intersections for Systems on the Order of 15 Atoms. Application to Cyclopentoxide Photoelectron Detachment in the Full 39 Degrees of Freedom

We present, for systems of moderate dimension, a fitting framework to construct quasi-diabatic Hamiltonians that accurately represent ab initio adiabatic electronic structure data including the effects of conical intersections. The framework introduced here minimizes the difference between the fit prediction and the ab initio data obtained in the adiabatic representation, which is singular at a conical intersection seam. We define a general and flexible merit function to allow arbitrary representations and propose a representation to measure the fit-ab initio difference at geometries near electronic degeneracies. A fit Hamiltonian may behave poorly in insufficiently sampled regions, in which case a machine learning theory analysis of the fit representation suggests a regularization to address the deficiency. Our fitting framework including the regularization is used to construct the full 39-dimensional coupled diabatic potential energy surfaces for cyclopentoxy relevant to cyclopentoxide photoelectron detachment.

Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence studies of the tert-butoxide anion (CH3)3CO((-)), the carbanion isomer (CH3)2CH2COH((-)), and corresponding radicals

A study of the photodetachment and dissociative photodetachment (DPD) of the C(4)H(9)O(-) isomers tert-butoxide, (CH(3))(3)CO(-), and the α-hydroxy carbanion (CH(3))(2)C(CH(2))OH(-) is reported. Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectroscopy was used to study these anions at 387, 537, and 600 nm. Supported by CBS-QB3 ab initio calculations, the product mass and translational energy distributions were found to be consistent with dissociation of either highly excited (CH3)(3)CO radicals or (CH(3))(2)C(CH2)OH alkylhydroxy radicals. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra of stable radicals at 537 and 600 nm in conjunction with Franck-Condon simulations were used to assign the dominant channel to tert-butoxide ((CH(3)3)CO(-)) anions thermalized to a vibrational temperature of 550 K. DPD is assigned to highly vibrationally excited radicals produced by photodetachment of unrelaxed tert-butoxide products formed at an effective source temperature of 1400 K. The higher energy carbanion was found to be a minor channel and was not observed to dissociate. Calculated energetics for photodetachment and DPD of (CH(3))(3)CO(-) and (CH(3))(2)C(CH(2))OH(-) are discussed and compared with the experimental results.

Dissociative photodetachment of the ethoxide anion and stability of the ethoxy radical CH3CH2O•

The ethoxy radical is an important species in combustion chemistry; however, considerable debate regarding the fragmentation pathways exists. In order to examine the stability and dissociation dynamics of the ethoxy radical in the two lowest electronic states, dissociative photodetachment experiments at 3.20 eV were carried out on the ethoxide anion, CH3CH2O(-), and its per-deuterated isotopologue. Production of excited radicals by photodetachment of the alkoxide anion was found to lead to only CH3 + H2CO products, with no indication of the energetically allowed H-loss channel, H + CH3CHO. Ab initio calculations for the anionic and neutral surfaces, including relevant isomerization and dissociation barriers, were carried out using the CBS-QB3 method to aid in interpretation of the data. The energetics observed in the photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectra indicate that the calculated barrier (0.70 eV) for the process CH3CH2O → CH3 + H2CO and the stability of the CH3CH2O radical relative to those products are upper limits.

Gas phase reactions of 1,3,5-triazine: proton transfer, hydride transfer, and anionic σ-adduct formation

The gas phase reactivity of 1,3,5-triazine with several oxyanions and carbanions, as well as amide, was evaluated using a flowing afterglow-selected ion flow tube mass spectrometer. Isotopic labeling, H/D exchange, and collision induced dissociation experiments were conducted to facilitate the interpretation of structures and fragmentation processes. A multi-step (→ HCN + HC(2)N (2) (-) → CN(-) + 2 HCN) and/or single-step (→ CN(-) + 2 HCN) ring-opening collision-induced fragmentation process appears to exist for 1,3,5-triazinide. In addition to proton and hydride transfer reactions, the data indicate a competitive nucleophilic aromatic addition pathway (S(N)Ar) over a wide range of relative gas phase acidities to form strong anionic σ-adducts (Meisenheimer complexes). The significant hydride acceptor properties and stability of the anionic σ-adducts are rationalized by extremely electrophilic carbon centers and symmetric charge delocalization at the electron-withdrawing nitrogen positions. The types of anion-arene binding motifs and their influence on reaction pathways are discussed.

Formation and Decomposition of Chemically Activated Cyclopentoxy Radicals from the c-C5H9 + O Reaction

The formation and the decomposition of chemically activated cyclopentoxy radicals from the c-C5H9 + O reaction have been studied in the gas phase at room temperature. Two different experimental arrangements have been used. Arrangement A consisted of a laser-flash photolysis set up combined with quantitative Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and allowed the determination of the stable products at 4 mbar. The c-C5H9 radicals were produced via the reaction c-C5H10 + Cl with chlorine atoms from the photolysis of CFCl3; the O atoms were generated by photolysis of SO2. Arrangement B, a conventional discharge flow-reactor with molecular beam sampling, was used to determine the rate coefficient. Here, the hydrocarbon radicals (c-C5H9, C2H5, CH2OCH3) were produced via the reaction of atomic fluorine with c-C5H10, C2H6, and CH3OCH3, respectively, and detected by mass spectrometry after laser photoionization. For the c-C5H9 + O reaction, the relative contributions of intermediate formation (c-C5H9O) and direct abstraction (c-C5H8 + OH) were found to be 68 +/- 5 and 32 +/- 4%, respectively. The decomposition products of the chemically activated intermediate could be identified, and the following relative branching fractions were obtained: c-C5H8O + H (31 +/- 2%), CH2CH(CH2)2CHO + H (40 +/- 5%), 2 C2H4 + H + CO (17 +/- 5%), and C3H4O + C2H4 + H (12 +/- 5%). Additionally, the product formation of the c-C5H8 + O reaction was studied, and the following relative yields were obtained (mol %): C2H4, 24%; C3H4O, 18%; c-C5H8O, 30%; c-C5H8O, 23%; 4-pentenal, 5%. The rate coefficient of the c-C5H9 + O reaction was determined relative to the reactions C2H5 + O and CH3OCH2 + O leading to k = (1.73 +/- 0.05) x 10(14) cm3 mol(-1) s(-1). The experimental branching fractions are analyzed in terms of statistical rate theory with molecular and transition-state data from quantum chemical calculations, and high-pressure limiting Arrhenius parameters for the unimolecular decomposition reactions of C5H9O species are derived.
