Reactions of HOBr + HCl + nH2O and HOBr + HBr + nH2O

The influence of (H2O)1-2 in the HOBr + HO2 gas-phase reaction

The HOBr + HO₂ reaction in the absence of water has three different channels for the abstraction of H to generate the corresponding products. The dominant channel is the generation of BrO + H₂O₂. The introduction of water molecules influences this dominant reaction via the way the reactants interact with the water molecules. The addition of water molecules decreases the energy barrier and increases the rate coefficient of the reaction. Interestingly, water works as a catalyst and we obtain BrO + H₂O₂, like in the reaction without water, or the water works as a reactant and we obtain products other than BrO + H₂O₂. The rate coefficients of the HOBr + HO₂ reaction in the presence of water are calculated to be faster than the reaction in the absence of water. However, other pathways in the presence of water are slower than the reaction in the absence of water. The water-assisted effective rate coefficients for the HOBr + HO₂ reaction are also larger than those for the reaction in the absence of water. The influence of a water dimer is not as important when compared with one water molecule. In summary, a single water molecule has a positive catalytic influence in enhancing the HOBr + HO₂ reaction.

Mechanisms of Reactions between HOI and HY (Y = Cl, Br, I) on a Water Nanodroplet Surface

Iodine chemistry has a broad range of implications for atmospheric processes including new particle formation. Hypoiodous acid (HOI) is a major iodine reservoir species. Its heterogeneous recycling in marine aerosols influences the lifetime of ozone in the troposphere. One important step of such recycling is the reaction between HOI and HY (Y = Cl, Br, I). In this article, we employ ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and quantum chemistry to investigate these reactions at the surface of atmospheric aerosols. Di-halogen (XY) can be formed in a picosecond time scale, with the formation of a loop structure connected by hydrogen and halogen bonds. The photolysis of XY at the surface of an aerosol is faster than in the gas phase. In addition to the formation of di-halogen, a new pathway to forming a [H₂O···I···OH₂]⁺ complex by the direct or indirect proton transition is identified. Results presented in this study deepen our understanding of the faster iodine-heterogeneous recycling at the surface of aerosols.

The heterogeneous interaction of HOCl with solid KBr substrates: The catalytic role of adsorbed halogens

The heterogeneous reactivity of HOCl on solid KBr at ambient temperature has been studied using a Knudsen flow reactor. On solid KBr steady-state uptake experiments reveal the formation of Br- and Cl-containing reaction products formed in secondary reactions such as Br(2), BrCl, HOBr, BrOCl, Cl(2) and Cl(2)O with the latter two predominating in the late stages of the reaction. The uptake coefficient gamma spanning a range between 0.15 and 1 x 10(-3) and product yields of HOCl strongly depend on the nature of the solid sample, whether grain, ground grain or thin sprayed film, as well as on sample processing such as pumping and/or heating. Furthermore, the presence of adsorbed halogen species such as Br(2)(a) are crucial for the kinetics of the reaction of HOCl with solid KBr substrates. The presence of surface-adsorbed water (SAW) leads to deactivation of KBr whereas mechanical stress such as grinding leads to the formation of surface defects that become reaction centers. Desorption of SAW at T > 620 K induces high reactivity of the KBr sample at ambient temperature. A reaction mechanism encompassing all significant observations including unusual autocatalytic activity is given as there is no direct reaction of HOCl with solid KBr. It stresses the importance of adsorbed Br-containing species such as Br(2)(a) and HBr(a) that initiate the heterogeneous chemistry of HOCl on solid KBr in the presence of SAW. The role of surface acidity and SAW for the extent of reaction is emphasized.
