A quantitative parameter for predicting mixing behaviour in adsorbed layers: the 2D isomorphism coefficient

Organic multicomponent microparticle libraries

Multimetallic nanostructures can be synthesized by integrating up to seven or eight metallic elements into a single nanoparticle, which represent a great advance in developing complex multicomponent nanoparticle libraries. Contrary, organic micro- and nanoparticles beyond three π-conjugated components have not been explored because of the diversity and structural complexity of molecular assemblies. Here, we report a library of microparticles composed of an arbitrary combination of four luminescent organic semiconductors. We demonstrate that the composition and emission color of each domain as well as its spatial distribution can be rationally modulated. Unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary microparticles are thus realized in a predictable manner based on the miscibility of the components, resulting in mixed-composition phases or alloyed or phase separated heterostructures. This work reports a simple yet available synthetic methodology for rational modulation of organic multicomponent microparticles with complex architectures, which can be used to direct the design of functional microparticles.

The synthesis of alloyed complex multicomponent micro- and nanoparticles composed of organic molecules is challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate a library of mixed composition organic microparticles in comprising up to four compounds in their structure.

Halogen Bonding in Bicomponent Monolayers: Self-Assembly of a Homologous Series of Iodinated Perfluoroalkanes with Bipyridine

A homologous series of halogen bonding monolayers based on terminally iodinated perfluoroalkanes and 4,4'-bipyridine have been observed on a graphitic surface and noninvasively probed using powder X-ray diffraction. An excellent agreement is observed between the X-ray structures and density functional theory calculations with dispersion force corrections. Theoretical analysis of the binding energies of the structures indicate that these halogen bonds are strong (25 kJ mol^-1), indicating that the layers are highly stable. The monolayer structures are found to be distinct from any plane of the corresponding bulk structures, with limited evidence of partitioning of hydrocarbon and perfluoro tectons. The interchain interactions are found to be slightly stronger than those in related aromatic systems, with important implications for 2D crystal engineering.

Supramolecular self-assembled network formation containing N⋯Br halogen bonds in physisorbed overlayers

A tale of tails: alkyl chain directed formation of 2D porous networks reveals odd-even effects and unexpected bicomponent phase behavior

Supramolecular self-assembly of suitably functionalized building blocks on surfaces can serve as an excellent test-bed to gain understanding and control over multicomponent self-assembly in more complex matter. Here we employ a powerful combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and molecular modeling to uncover two-dimensional (2D) crystallization and mixing behavior of a series of alkylated building blocks based on dehydrobenzo[12]annulene, forming arrays of nanowells. Thorough STM investigation employing high-resolution spatial imaging, use of specially designed marker molecules, statistical analysis and thermal stability measurements revealed rich and complex supramolecular chemistry, highlighting the impact of odd-even effects on the phase behavior. The methodology and analysis presented in this work can be easily adapted to the self-assembly of other alkylated building blocks.

To mix or not to mix: 2D crystallization and mixing behavior of saturated and unsaturated aliphatic primary amides

Physisorbed monolayers based on relatively weak noncovalent interactions can serve as excellent model systems for understanding crystallization of materials in reduced dimensionality. Here we employ a powerful combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and computational modeling to reveal two-dimensional (2D) crystallization and mixing behavior of saturated and unsaturated (cis as well as trans) aliphatic primary amides. The foundation of the present work is laid by DSC measurements, which reveal characteristic adsorption and mixing behavior of aliphatic amides. These results are further supported by STM visualization of the adlayers. STM reveals, at submolecular resolution, the adsorption as well as the two-component 2D phase behavior of these molecules at the liquid-solid interface. The saturated and trans-unsaturated amides exhibit random mixing in view of their size and shape complementarity. Binary mixtures of saturated and cis-unsaturated amides, on the other hand, display unprecedented mixing behavior. The linear saturated and bent cis-unsaturated amide molecules are found to mix surprisingly better at the liquid-solid interface than might have been expected on account of the dissimilarity in their shapes. Strong, directional intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions as well as the relative stabilization energies of the adlayers are responsible for such unusual mixing behavior. Computational modeling provides additional insight into all the possible interactions in 2D assemblies and their impact on stabilization energies of the supramolecular networks. This study provides a model for understanding the effect of nanoscale cocrystallization on the thin film structure at interfaces and demonstrates the importance of molecular geometry and hydrogen bonding in determining the coadsorption behavior.

Application of the solid state NMR to the study of the alcohol/alkane mixtures adsorption onto graphite

The mixing of molecules adsorbed from solution to different interfaces has both industrial and academic relevance and the mixing behaviour at the interface is a key to understanding for example, that the surface tension of a mixture of two surfactants is lower than either of the two pure materials and many other effects. In this paper, we report, for the first time, the application of Solid State NMR to the study of alkane/alcohol mixtures, in a range of relative size ratio between 0 and 0.35, adsorbed onto graphite at high, multilayer coverage. Moreover, this paper evaluated, for the first time, the utility of the combined used of 1H and 2H NMR for: (i) determining the surface composition and (ii) making a theoretical approach to the sorption isotherm. A variety of preferential adsorption behaviour is reported. Preferential adsorption of the longer molecule (decane vs. heptanol) from a mixture has been observed. However, if both components are of similar length, the alcohol is preferentially adsorbed (heptanol vs. octane and octanol vs. octane). Finally, a linear relation between the relative size ratio and the amount of alcohol at monolayer coverage is observed.

Mixing behavior of alkoxylated dehydrobenzo [12]annulenes at the solid-liquid interface: scanning tunneling microscopy and Monte Carlo simulations

We present a systematic scanning tunneling microscopic study on the mixing behavior of molecules (DBAs) with different alkyl substituents at the solid-liquid interface to reveal the phase behavior of complex systems. The phase behavior of binary mixtures of alkylated DBAs at the solid-liquid interface can be predicted by the 2D isomorphism coefficient. In addition, we also investigated the influence of coadsorption of template molecules on the phase behavior of DBA mixtures. Coadsorption of these molecules significantly promotes mixing of DBAs, possibly by affecting the recognition between alkyl chains. Monte Carlo simulations prove that the 2D isomorphism coefficient can predict the phase behavior at the interface. These results are helpful for the understanding of phase behavior of complex assembling systems and also for the design of programmable porous networks and hierarchical architectures at the solid-liquid interface.

Bulk and adsorbed monolayer phase behavior of binary mixtures of undecanoic acid and undecylamine: catanionic monolayers

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) have been used to determine the phase behavior of the binary mixtures of undecanoic acid (A) and undecylamine (B) in the bulk. In addition, we report DSC data that indicates very similar behavior for the solid monolayers of these materials adsorbed on the surface of graphite. The two species are found to form a series of stoichiometric complexes of the type AB, A(2)B, and A(3)B on the acid rich side of the phase diagram. Interestingly, no similar series of complexes is evident on the amine rich side. As a result of this complexation, the solid monolayers of the binary mixtures exhibit a very pronounced enhancement in stability relative to the pure adsorbates.

Observation of a two-dimensional halogen-bonded cocrystal at sub-monolayer coverage using synchrotron X-ray diffraction

The formation of two-dimensional halogen-bonded layers of 4,4'-bipyridyl and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene was observed on a graphite surface at sub-monolayer coverage using synchrotron X-ray diffraction; the use of the diffraction technique enabled, for the first time, the measurement of I···N halogen bonding distances in a two-dimensional cocrystal and the identification of the halogen bonding interaction in the monolayer.

Crystalline structures of alkylamide monolayers adsorbed on the surface of graphite

Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction have been used to determine the two-dimensional crystalline structures of alkylamides adsorbed on graphite at submonolayer coverage. The calculated structures show that the plane of the carbon backbone of the amide molecules is parallel to the graphite substrate. The molecules form hydrogen-bonded dimers, and adjacent dimers form additional hydrogen bonds yielding extended chains. By presenting data from a number of members of the homologous series, we have identified that these chains pack in different arrangements depending on the number of carbons in the amide molecule. The amide monolayers are found to be very stable relative to other closely related alkyl species, a feature which is attributed to the extensive hydrogen bonding present in these systems. The characteristics of the hydrogen bonds have been determined and are found to be in close agreement with those present in the bulk materials.

Mixing in adsorbed monolayers: perfluorinated alkanes

The mixing behavior of binary combinations of perfluoroalkanes in the bulk and in solid monolayers adsorbed at the graphite/liquid interface, determined by calorimetry and powder diffraction, is reported. The perfluoroalkanes are found to generally have a smaller excess enthalpy of mixing on the surface than in the bulk, and their relative size ratio is a good parameter to predict the mixing behavior. The excess enthalpy of mixing for perfluoroalkanes is found to be significantly smaller than that of the closely related hydrocarbons. The preferential adsorption of longer homologues over shorter ones is observed. Interestingly, the extent of preferential adsorption with relative size ratio is very similar to that of the hydrocarbons. These results can be understood in terms of the increased compressibility and lower polarizability of the perfluoroalkanes compared to hydrocarbons.

Thermodynamic investigation of the adsorption of amides on graphite from their liquids and binary mixtures

We report a thermodynamic investigation of the adsorption of saturated and unsaturated (cis- and trans-) alkyl amides onto the surface of graphite from their pure liquids and from binary mixtures. We identify the formation of solid monolayers of the amides at temperatures when the bulk materials are liquid. The extent of this presolidification is much more extensive than other related materials, indicating that these amide layers are significantly more stable. The monolayer stability is found to be greatest for saturated amides. In addition, the stability of unsaturated amides is extremely sensitive to the location of the double bonds in the alkyl chain of the molecules, and trans isomers are found to be more stable than cis. We also address the preferential adsorption and mixing behavior of amide mixtures and amides mixed with other species coadsorbed onto graphite from binary solution. The results indicate that the amide molecules appear to be adsorbed with their principal axis parallel to the graphite surface and that amides are found to be strongly preferentially adsorbed with respect to alkanes. Interestingly the amides appear to mix rather better than might have been expected. There is also evidence of a number of other transitions in the adsorbates.

Adsorption and Mixing Behavior of Ethers and Alkanes at the Solid/Liquid Interface

The behavior of binary mixtures of linear symmetrical ethers and alkanes adsorbed to a graphite surface from the bulk liquid mixtures is described on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data. Both the ethers and the alkanes are found to form solid monolayers when adsorbed from the liquid. In addition, the monolayer mixing behavior is addressed. The results indicate that there is good, essentially ideal, mixing in the monolayers for ethers and alkanes of the same overall chain length, where the chain length is equal to the total number of carbon and oxygen atoms in the molecule. However, a difference in chain length of more than one atom results in a variation of mixing behavior from nonideal mixing (for long pairs) to phase separation (for short pairs) on the graphite surface. Hence, we conclude that it is the relative chain lengths that control mixing behavior. The results are quantified using a regular solution model with a correction for preferential adsorption. The phase behavior of the mixed monolayers is also compared to the behavior of the bulk. Interestingly, we observe mixtures where the bulk and monolayer behavior are quite different, for example, phase separation in the bulk but essentially ideal mixing in the monolayer for mixtures of ethers and alkanes with the same chain lengths. At present, we attribute this mixing in the monolayer to dilution of the unfavorable ether oxygen-ether oxygen lone pair interactions by the coadsorbed alkanes. In addition, we find evidence for the preferential adsorption of the alkane over the ether. For example, heptane is preferentially adsorbed over dibutyl ether even though it contains two fewer atoms in the molecular chain. This contrasts with the preferential adsorption of alcohols over alkanes reported previously (Messe, L.; Perdigon, A.; Clarke, S. M.; Inaba, A.; Arnold, T. Langmuir 2005, 21, 5085-5093).

The Crystalline Structures of Carboxylic Acid Monolayers Adsorbed on Graphite

X-ray and neutron diffraction have been used to investigate the formation of solid crystalline monolayers of all of the linear carboxylic acids from C(6) to C(14) at submonolayer coverage and from C(8) to C(14) at multilayer coverages, and to characterize their structures. X-rays and neutrons highlight different aspects of the monolayer structures, and their combination is therefore important in structural determination. For all of the acids with an odd number of carbon atoms, the unit cell is rectangular of plane group pgg containing four molecules. The members of the homologous series with an even number of carbon atoms have an oblique unit cell with two molecules per unit cell and plane group p2. This odd-even variation in crystal structure provides an explanation for the odd-even variation observed in monolayer melting points and mixing behavior. In all cases, the molecules are arranged in strongly hydrogen-bonded dimers with their extended axes parallel to the surface and the plane of the carbon skeleton essentially parallel to the graphite surface. The monolayer crystal structures have unit cell dimensions similar to certain close-packed planes of the bulk crystals, but the molecular arrangements are different. There is a 1-3% compression on increasing the coverage over a monolayer.

Alkane/Alcohol mixed monolayers at the solid/liquid interface

In this work, we present the behavior of solid monolayers of binary mixtures of alkanes and alcohols adsorbed on the surface of graphite from their liquid mixtures. We demonstrate that solid monolayers form for all the combinations investigated here. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used to identify the surface phase behavior of these mixtures, and elastic neutron incoherent scattering has been used to determine the composition of the mixed monolayers inferred by the calorimetry. The mixing behavior of the alcohol/alkane monolayer mixtures is compared quantitatively with alkane/alkane and alcohol/alcohol mixtures using a regular solution approach to model the incomplete mixing in the solid monolayer with preferential adsorption determining the surface composition. This analysis indicates the preferential adsorption of alcohols over alkanes of comparable alkyl chain length and even preferential adsorption of shorter alcohols over longer alkanes, which contrasts strongly with mixtures of alkane/alkane and alcohol/alcohol of different alkyl chain lengths where the longer homologue is always found to preferentially adsorb over the shorter. The alcohol/alkane mixtures are all found to phase separate to a significant extent in the adsorbed layer mixtures even when molecules are of a similar size. Again, this contrasts strongly with alkane/alkane and alcohol/alcohol mixtures where, although phase separation is found for molecules of significantly different size, good mixing is found for similar size species.
