Abstract
Densely packed interfacial nanoparticle films form spontaneously when aqueous Ag colloid is shaken with CH2Cl2 in the presence of a "promoter" such as 10(-4) mol dm(-3) tetrabutylammonium nitrate (TBA(+)NO3(-)), which induces rapid self-assembly of the nanoparticles at the liquid/liquid interface without adsorbing onto their surfaces. The particles within these reflective, metal-like liquid films (MeLLFs) are optically coupled and give strong SERS enhancement, similar to that obtained for the same colloid aggregated with optimized concentration of metal salt. However, unlike aggregated colloids their structure means they do not sediment out of solution so they give SERS spectra that are stable for >20 h) and have good uniformity (relative standard deviation in absolute intensity over 1 mm(2) array of 25 points was 1.1%). Since the films lie at the aqueous/organic interface they are open to adsorption of analytes from either of the phases and can be probed in situ to detect both water- and nonwater-soluble analytes. The detection limit for mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) added to the organic layer was found to be <2 ppb. These materials therefore combine many of the best features of both patterned surfaces and metal colloids for quantitative SERS analysis.

Abstract
Palladium and platinum are important catalytic metals, and it would be highly advantageous to be able to use surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to study reactive species and intermediates on their surfaces. In this paper we describe the use of templated electrodeposition through colloidal templates to produce thin (<1 microm) films of palladium and platinum containing close packed hexagonal arrays of uniform sphere segment voids. We show that, even though these films are not rough, when the appropriate film thickness and sphere diameter are employed these surfaces give stable, reproducible surface enhancements for Raman scattering from molecules adsorbed at the metal surface. We report SERS spectra for benzenethiol adsorbed on the structured palladium and platinum surfaces of different thicknesses and void diameters and show that, for 633 nm radiation, enhancements of 1800 and 550 can be obtained for palladium and platinum, respectively.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has developed into one of the most important tools in analytical and surface sciences since its discovery in the mid-1970s. Recent work on the SERS of transition metals concluded that transition metals, other than Cu, Ag, and Au, can also generate surface enhancement as high as 4 orders of magnitude. The present article gives an overview of recent progresses in the field of Raman spectroscopy on transition metals, including experimental, theory, and applications. Experimental considerations of how to optimize the experimental conditions and calculate the surface enhancement factor are discussed first, followed by a very brief introduction of preparation of SERS-active transition metal substrates, including massive transition metal surfaces, aluminum-supported transition metal electrodes, and pure transition metal nanoparticle assembled electrodes. The advantages of using SERS in investigating surface bonding and reaction are illustrated for the adsorption and reaction of benzene on Pt and Rh electrodes. The electromagnetic enhancement, mainly lightning-rod effect, plays an essential role in the SERS of transition metals, and that the charge-transfer effect is also operative in some specific metal-molecule systems. An outlook for the field of Raman spectroscopy of transition metals is given in the last section, including the preparation of well-ordered or well-defined nanostructures, and core-shell nanoparticles for investigating species with extremely weak SERS signals, as well as some new emerging techniques, including tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and an in situ measuring technique.

Abstract
The aim of this work is to further improve the molecular generality and substrate generality of SERS (i.e., to fully optimize the SERS activity of transition-metal electrodes). We utilized a strategy of borrowing high SERS activity from the Au core based on Au-core Pt-shell (Au@Pt) nanoparticle film electrodes, which can be simply and routinely prepared. The shell thickness from about one to five monolayers of Pt atoms can be well controlled by adjusting the ratio of the number of Au seeds to Pt(IV) ions in the solution. The SERS experimental results of carbon monoxide adsorption indicate that the enhancement factor for the Au@Pt nanoparticle film electrodes is more than 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of electrochemically roughened Pt electrodes. The practical virtues of the present film electrodes for obtaining rich and high-quality vibrational information for diverse adsorbates on transition metals are pointed out and briefly illustrated with systems of CO, hydrogen, and benzene adsorbed on Pt. We believe that the electrochemical applications of SERS will be broadened with this strategy, in particular, for extracting detailed vibrational information for adsorbates at transition-metal electrode interfaces.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of Fe nanocrystals (approximately 9 nm) in an anhydrous media, formamide, using poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a protecting agent. The morphology, structure, and composition of the PVP-coated Fe nanocrystals are studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The surface properties of the PVP-coated Fe nanocrystals are studied by electrochemistry and micro-surface-enhanced Raman scattering (mSERS) using pyridine as a probing molecule. The PVP-coated Fe nanocrystals, when immobilized on an electrode substrate, display very good electrocatalytic activities in the selective reduction of H2O2 in the presence of oxygen and in the oxidation of NO.

Abstract
A sandwich structure consisting of Ag nanoparticles (NPs), p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), and Ag NPs was fabricated on glass and characterized by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The SERS spectrum of a p-ATP SAM in such sandwich structure shows that the electromagnetic enhancement is greater than that on Ag NPs assembled on glass. The obtained enhancement factors (EF) on solely one sandwich structure were as large as 6.0 +/- 0.62 x 10(4) and 1.2 +/- 0.62 x 10(7) for the 7a and 3b(b(2)) vibration modes, respectively. The large enhancement effect of p-ATP SAMs is likely a result of plasmon coupling between the two layers of Ag NP (localized surface plasmon) resonance, creating a large localized electromagnetic field at their interface, where p-ATP resides. Moreover, the fact that large EF values (approximately 1.9 +/- 0.7 x 10(4) and 9.4 +/- 0.7 x 10(6) for the 7a- and b(2)-type vibration modes, respectively) were also obtained on a single sandwich structure of Au NPsp-ATP SAMsAg NPs in the visible demonstrates that the electromagnetic coupling does not exist only between Ag NPs but also between Au and Ag NPs. The lower EF values on Au-to-Ag NPs compared to those on Ag-to-Ag NPs demonstrate that the Au-to-Ag coupling must be less effective than the Ag-to-Ag coupling for the induction of SERS in the visible.

Abstract
A surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) study of pyrazine adsorbed on roughened Rh electrodes was performed. Potential and concentration effects on the adsorption behavior of pyrazine were investigated. The SER spectra display four pairs of overlapping bands with the relative intensity of each pair being highly potential dependent, which has not been observed on other metals. The orientation change of the adsorbed pyrazine from the end-on to N/pi bonded edge-on configuration is proposed to account for this potential-dependent relative intensity change. This hypothesis is further supported by the SERS results obtained at different pyrazine concentrations. In conjunction with the orientation effect, the interaction of Rh with hydrogen and oxygen generated at different potentials has a great influence on the adsorption configuration of pyrazine.

Abstract
This review describes advances made toward the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in sensitive analysis and diagnostics. In the early sections of this review we briefly introduce the fundamentals of SERS including a discussion of SERS at the single-molecule level. Applications relevant to trace analysis, environmental monitoring, and homeland security and defense, for example high explosives and contaminant detection, are emphasized. Because the key to wider application of SERS analysis lies in the development of highly enhancing substrates, in the second half of the review we focus our attention on the extensive progress made in designing innovative soluble, supported, and ordered SERS-active nano-architectures to harness the potential of this technique toward solving current and emerging analytical tasks. No attempt or claim is made to review the field exhaustively in its entirety nor to cover all applications, but only to describe several significant milestones and progress made in these important areas and to provide some perspective on where the field is quickly moving.

Abstract
Over the past three decades, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has gone through a tortuous pathway to develop into a powerful surface diagnostic technique for in situ investigation of surface adsorption and reactions on electrodes. This review presents the recent progress achieved mainly in our laboratory on the improvement of detection sensitivities as well as spectral, temporal, and spatial resolutions. Various surface roughening procedures for electrodes of different metals coupled with maximum use of a high-sensitivity confocal Raman microscope enable us to obtain good-quality SER spectra on the electrode surfaces made from net Pt, Ni, Co, Fe, Pd, Rh, Ru, and their alloys that were traditionally considered to be non-SERS active. A novel technique called potential-averaged SERS (PASERS) has been developed for the quantitative study of electrochemical sorption. Applications are exemplified on extensively studied areas such as coadsorption, electrocatalysis, corrosion, and fuel cells, and several advantages of in situ electrochemical SERS are demonstrated. Finally, further developments in this field are briefly discussed with emphasis on the emerging methodology.

Abstract
Some points on how to improve the detection sensitivity of confocal Raman microscopy for the study of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of transition-metal electrodes are discussed, including the careful design of the spectroelectrochemical cell, proper selection of the thickness of the solution layer, the binning of charge-coupled device (CCD) pixels, and appropriate setting of the notch filter. Various roughening methods for the Pt, Rh, Fe, Co, and Ni electrode surfaces have been introduced in order to obtain SERS-active surfaces. It has been shown that the appropriate roughening procedure and the optimizing performance of the confocal Raman microscope are the two most important factors to directly generate and observe SERS on net transition-metal electrodes.
