Water interaction with oligo-(ethoxy) ethylene glycols

Preparation of evaporation-resistant aqueous microdroplet arrays as a model system for the study of molecular order at the liquid/air interface

Aqueous arrays of microdroplets typically sized between 2 and 10 microm were generated by microfluid contact printing and stabilized with respect to evaporation by incorporation of poly(ethylene oxide). The arrays are used as a model system for the study of structure formation at liquid/air or liquid/liquid interfaces. In particular, we demonstrated the self-organization of fatty acids with photopolymerizable diacetylene units (10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid) at the liquid/air interface of the microdroplets. Topochemical polymerization behavior of this compound and the autofluorescence property of the resulting polyconjugated polymer are appropriate features to prove the molecular order of the amphiphilic molecules at the interface.

Dendritic structures of poly(ethylene glycol) on silicon nitride and gold surfaces

A hydrophilic silicon nitride surface was grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (average formula weight of 5000 Da) in a one-step protocol. The domains of stable dendritic structures of self-assembled monolayer islands on a silicon nitride surface were observed with atomic force microscopy. The moduli of elasticity of these dendritic structures in air and in KCl aqueous solution were compared. The value of the Young's modulus of these structures is reduced by more than 3 orders of magnitude, from approximately 12 GPa measured in air to approximately 5 MPa in KCl solution. This dramatic reduction in elasticity was attributed to the swelling of the dendritic structures in aqueous solution, which was verified by the increased film thickness. These dendritic structures were not stable in the aqueous environment and could be removed by soaking in water for 22 h because of the hydrolysis of the silicate bonds. This fact was confirmed by the reduction of the C1s signal in the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. These morphologies are not unique to silicon nitride substrate; similar features were also observed for thiolated poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether molecules absorbed on a gold surface.

Swelling behavior of self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiol-terminated poly(ethylene glycol): a neutron reflectometry study

The swelling behavior of alkanethiol-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) with an average molecular weight of 2180 Da (i.e., approximately 45 ethylene glycol, EG, units) in contact with water was investigated by neutron reflectometry as a function of the morphology of the PEG-SH layer. Amorphous films at a low grafting density show significant swelling with an increase of the film thickness from approximately 25 A in the dry state to approximately 70 A in contact with D2O, which corresponds to a total water uptake of approximately 38 mass %. In contrast, quasi-crystalline monolayers exhibit only a small amount of water penetrating into the film (approximately 8 mass %) with a corresponding change of the layer thickness from approximately 110 to approximately 125 A. The water uptake per EG unit corresponds to the literature value of 1.5 for the amorphous layer and to only 0.25 in the case of the quasi-crystalline film.

Line tension behavior of a first-order wetting system

Line tension of hexaethylene glycol on a silicon wafer is measured with positive values up to +2.5x10(-11) N below a contact angle of 6 degrees and negative values down to -2x10(-10) N above 6 degrees, as expected for a first-order wetting system. From the measured interface potentials, a semiquantitative model function for the overall interface potential is derived as a superposition of a constant nonretarded van der Waals interaction with a Hamaker constant of -2.6x10(-19) J and an exponentially decaying term, allowing the prediction of a finite positive line tension at the wetting transition.
