Abstract
Detailed structural, dynamical, and vibrational analyses have been performed for systems composed of linear triatomic molecules solvated by a single rare-gas atom, He, Ne, or Ar. Among the chromophores of these van der Waals (vdW) dimers, there are four neutral molecules (CO2, CS2, N2O, and OCS) and six molecular cations (HHe2+, HNe2+, HAr2+, HHeNe+, HHeAr+, and HNeAr+), both of apolar and polar nature. Following the exploration of bonding preferences, high-level four-dimensional (4D) potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been developed for 24 vdW dimers, keeping the two intramonomer bond lengths fixed. For these 24 complexes, over 1500 bound vibrational states have been obtained via quasi-variational nuclear-motion computations, employing exact kinetic-energy operators together with the accurate 4D PESs and their 2D/3D cuts. The reduced-dimensional (2D to 4D) dimer models have been compared with full-dimensional (6D) ones in the cases of the neutral CO2·Ar and charged HHe2+·He dimers, corroborating the high accuracy of the 2D to 4D vibrational energies. The reduced-dimensional models suggest that (a) while the equilibrium structures are T-shaped and planar, the effective ground-state structures are nonplanar, (b) certain bound states belong to collinear molecular structures, even when they are not minima, (c) the vdW vibrations are heavily mixed and many states have amplitudes corresponding to both the T-shaped and collinear structures, (d) there are a few dimers, for which even some of the vdW fundamentals lie above the first dissociation limit, and (e) the vdW vibrations are almost fully decoupled from the intramonomer bending motion.

Abstract
Near-infrared spectroscopy of the C2H2-Ar, Kr complexes was performed in the spectral region overlapping the ν3/ν2 + ν4 + ν5 Fermi-type resonance of C2H2. The experiment was conducted along the HElium NanoDroplet Isolation (HENDI) technique in order to study the coupling dynamics between a floppy molecular system (C2H2-Ar and C2H2-Kr) and a mesoscopic quantum liquid (the droplet). Calculations were performed using a spectral element based close-coupling program and state-of-the-art 2-dimensional potential energy surfaces to determine the bound states of the C2H2-Ar and C2H2-Kr complexes and simulate the observed spectra. This furnished a quantitative basis to unravel how the superfluid and non-superfluid components of the droplet affect the rotation and the deformation dynamics of the hosted complex.

Abstract
Infrared spectra of Ne-C2D2 are observed in the region of the ν3 fundamental band (asymmetric C-D stretch, ≈2440 cm(-1)) using a tunable optical parametric oscillator to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion from a cooled nozzle. Like helium-acetylene, this system lies close to the free rotor limit, making analysis tricky because stronger transitions tend to pile up close to monomer (C2D2) rotation-vibration transitions. Assignments are aided by predicted rotational energies calculated from a published ab initio intermolecular potential energy surface. The analysis extends up to the j = 3←2 band, where j labels C2D2 rotation within the dimer, and is much more complete than the limited infrared assignments previously reported for Ne-C2H2 and Ne-C2HD. Two previous microwave transitions within the j = 1 state of Ne-C2D2 are reassigned. Coriolis model fits to the theoretical levels and to the spectrum are compared. Since the variations observed as a function of C2D2 vibrational excitation are comparable to those noted between theory and experiment, it is evident that more detailed testing of theory will require vibrational averaging over the acetylene intramolecular modes.

Abstract
Spectra of the helium-acetylene complex are elusive because this weakly bound system lies close to the free rotor limit. Previously, limited assignments of He-C2D2 transitions in the R(0) region of the ν3 fundamental band (≈2440 cm(-1)) were published. Here, new He-C2D2 infrared spectra of this band are obtained using a tunable optical parametric oscillator laser source to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion from a cooled nozzle, and the analysis is extended to the weaker and more difficult P(1) and R(1) regions. A term value approach is used to obtain a consistent set of "experimental" energy levels. These are compared directly with calculations using two recently reported ab initio intermolecular potential energy surfaces, which exhibit small but significant differences. Rovibrational energies for the He-C2H2 complex are also calculated using both surfaces. A Coriolis model, useful for predicting spectral intensities, is used to interpret the energy level patterns, and a comparison with the isoelectronic complex He-CO is made.

Abstract
The entrance channel leading to the addition reaction between the hydroxyl radical and acetylene has been examined by spectroscopic characterization of the asymmetric CH stretching band of the pi-hydrogen bonded OH-acetylene reactant complex. The infrared action spectrum observed at 3278.6 cm(-1) (origin) consists of seven peaks of various intensities and widths, and is very different from those previously reported for closed-shell HF/HCl-acetylene complexes. The unusual spectrum arises from a partial quenching of the OH orbital angular momentum in the complex, which in turn is caused by a significant splitting of the OH monomer orbital degeneracy into (2)A(') and (2)A(") electronic states. The magnitude of the (2)A(')-(2)A(") splitting as well as the A rotational constant for the OH-acetylene complex are determined from the analysis of this b-type infrared band. The most populated OH product rotational state, j(OH)=9/2, is consistent with intramolecular vibrational energy transfer to the nu2 C triple bonded C stretching mode of the departing acetylene fragment. The lifting of the OH orbital degeneracy and partial quenching of its electronic orbital angular momentum indicate that the electronic changes accompanying the evolution of reactants into products have begun to occur in the reactant complex.

Abstract
Rotational spectra of the weakly bound complex Ar-acetylene were measured using a Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. Eight additional transitions of the normal isotopomer were detected, following the earlier radiofrequency and microwave investigations [R. L. DeLeon and J. S. Muenter, J. Chem. Phys. 72, 6020-6023 (1980); Y. Ohshima, M. Iida, and Y. Endo, Chem. Phys. Lett. 161, 202-206 (1989)]. Spectra of four minor isotopomers, namely Ar-DCCD, Ar-H(13)C(13)CH, Ar-DCCH, and Ar-H(13)C(12)CH, were newly assigned and analyzed. A semirigid rotor model was employed to obtain the rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, which were in turn used to extract structural information about the complex. The unusually large standard deviations of the spectroscopic fits are indicators of large-amplitude internal motions of the acetylene subunit. Separate fits of the individual K-stacks yielded lower standard deviations, and their results were used to interpret some of the unusual spectroscopic observations. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.

Abstract
High-resolution optothermal laser spectroscopy is reported for the C-H stretching vibrations of the binary complexes formed between monodeuterated acetylene and carbon monoxide and nitrogen. In contrast with a previous study of the corresponding C(2)H(2) complexes, where the C-H fundamental spectra were highly perturbed [R. D. Beck, A. G. Maki, S.-H. Tseng, and R. O. Watts, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 158, 306-317 (1993)], the present spectra are well described by a simple linear-rotor Hamiltonian. This is presumed to result from the fact that the C-H vibration in the monodeuterated complexes is decoupled from the intermolecular degrees of freedom. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.
