Solvation structure of coumarin 1 in acetonitrile: role of the electrostatic solute–solvent potential

White-Light Emitting Di-Ureasil Hybrids

White-light emitting materials have emerged as important components for solid state lighting devices with high potential for the replacement of conventional light sources. Herein, amine-functionalized organic-inorganic di-ureasil hybrids consisting of a siliceous skeleton and oligopolyether chains codoped with lanthanide-based complexes, with Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions and 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) and 1,10-phenanthroline ligands, and the coumarin 1 dye were synthesized by in situ sol⁻gel method. The resulting luminescent di-ureasils show red, green, and blue colors originated from the Eu3+, Tb3+, and C1 emissions, respectively. The emission colors can be modulated either by variation of the relative concentration between the emitting centers or by changing the excitation wavelength. White light emission is achieved under UV excitation with absolute quantum yields of 0.148 ± 0.015, 0.167 ± 0.017, and 0.202 ± 0.020 at 350, 332, and 305 nm excitation, respectively. The emission mechanism was investigated by photoluminescence and UV⁻visible absorption spectroscopy, revealing an efficient energy transfer from the organic ligands to the Ln3+ ions and the organic dye, whereas negligible interaction between the dopants is discerned. The obtained luminescent di-ureasils have potential for optoelectronic applications, such as in white-light emitting diodes.

Experimental and database-transferred electron-density analysis and evaluation of electrostatic forces in coumarin-102 dye

The electron-density distribution of a new crystal form of coumarin-102, a laser dye, has been investigated using the Hansen-Coppens multipolar atom model. The charge density was refined versus high-resolution X-ray diffraction data collected at 100 K and was also constructed by transferring the charge density from the Experimental Library of Multipolar Atom Model (ELMAM2). The topology of the refined charge density has been analysed within the Bader `Atoms In Molecules' theory framework. Deformation electron-density peak heights and topological features indicate that the chromen-2-one ring system has a delocalized π-electron cloud in resonance with the N (amino) atom. The molecular electrostatic potential was estimated from both experimental and transferred multipolar models; it reveals an asymmetric character of the charge distribution across the molecule. This polarization effect is due to a substantial charge delocalization within the molecule. The molecular dipole moments derived from the experimental and transferred multipolar models are also compared with the liquid and gas-phase dipole moments. The substantial molecular dipole moment enhancements observed in the crystal environment originate from the crystal field and from intermolecular charge transfer induced and controlled by C-H···O and C-H···N intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The atomic forces were integrated over the atomic basins and compared for the two electron-density models.

Solvation Dynamics in Acetonitrile: A Study Incorporating Solute Electronic Response and Nuclear Relaxation

The solvent reorganization process after electronic excitation of a polar solute in a polar solvent such as acetonitrile is related mainly to the time evolution of the solute-solvent electrostatic interaction. Modern laser-based techniques have sufficient time resolution to follow this decay in real time, providing information to be confirmed and interpreted by theories and models. We present here a study aimed at the investigation of the different steps involved in the process taking place after a vertical S(0) --> S(1) excitation of a large size chromophore, coumarin 153 (C153), in acetonitrile, from both the solute and the solvent points of view. To do this, we use accurate quantum mechanical calculations for the solute properties within the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, both equilibrium and nonequilibrium, for C153 in the presence of the solvent. The geometry of the solute is allowed to change in order to study the role of internal motions in the time-dependent solvation process. The solvent response function has been obtained from the simulation data and compared to experiment, while the comparison between equilibrium and nonequilibrium MD results for the solvation response confirms the validity of the linear response approximation in the C153-acetonitrile system. The MD trajectories have also been used to monitor the structure of the solvation shell and to determine its change in response to the change in the solute partial charges.

Rotational diffusion of the 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin C1 dye molecule in polar protic and aprotic solvents

Fluorescence anisotropy decays of the 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin C1 in various polar solvents of different viscosities and hydrogen bond donor/acceptor character have been recorded by means of the fluorescence upconversion and time-correlated single photon counting techniques. The resulting characteristic times for the rotational diffusion fall into two classes with regards to the viscosity-dependency: n-alcohols and "other" solvents. This deviation from the simple Stokes-Einstein-Debye model may be interpreted in terms of rotation of the coumarin molecule under two different hydrodynamic boundary-conditions ("stick" or "slip") in the two solvent classes. Possible explanations for this behaviour are discussed, and in particular solvent attachment and additional dielectric friction. Both these phenomena may in fact, under certain conditions, explain our findings. Our opinion, however, is that the dielectric friction model offers a more realistic picture of the additional rotational friction experienced by C1 in n-alcohols.
