Dissociative electron attachment to CO and NO: the O− production threshold revisited

Dissociation dynamics of anionic carbon monoxide in dark states

A resonant system consisting of an excess electron and a closed-shell atom or molecule, as a temporary negative ion, is usually in doublet-spin states that are analogous to bright states of photoexcitation of the neutral. However, anionic higher-spin states, noted as dark states, are scarcely accessed. Here, we report the dissociation dynamics of CO- in dark quartet resonant states that are formed by electron attachments to electronically excited CO (a3Π). Among the dissociations to O-(2P) + C(3P), O-(2P) + C(1D), and O-(2P) + C(1S), the latter two are spin-forbidden in the quartet-spin resonant states of CO-, while the first process is preferred in 4Σ- and 4Π states. The present finding sheds new light on anionic dark states.

Fragmentation dynamics in dissociative electron attachment to CO probed by velocity slice imaging

Complete dissociation dynamics in electron attachment to carbon monoxide (CO) have been studied using the newly developed velocity slice imaging (VSI) technique. Both kinetic energy and angular distributions of O(-) ions formed by dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to CO molecules have been measured for 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, and 11.5 eV incident electron energies around the resonance. Detailed observations conclusively show that two separate DEA reactions lead to the formation of O(-) ions in the ground (2)P state along with the neutral C atoms in the ground (3)P state and the first excited (1)D state, respectively. Within the axial recoil approximation and involving four partial waves, our angular distribution results clearly indicate that the two reactions leading to O(-) formation proceed through the specific resonant state(s). For the first process, more than one intermediate state is involved. On the other hand, for the second process, only one state is involved. The observed forward-backward asymmetry is explained in terms of the interference between the different partial waves that are involved in the processes.

Electron attachment to uracil: effective destruction at subexcitation energies

We demonstrate that electrons at energies below the threshold for electronic excitation (<3 eV) effectively decompose gas phase uracil generating a mobile hydrogen radical and the corresponding closed shell uracil fragment anion (U-H)(-). The reaction is energetically driven by the large electron affinity of the (U-H) radical. This observation has significant consequences for the molecular picture of radiation damage, i.e., genotoxic effects or damage of living cells due to the secondary component of high energy radiation.
