Effect of proton chemical-shift anisotropy on double-quantum MASNMR sideband patterns

Double Quantum 1H MAS NMR Studies of Hydrogen-Bonded Protons and Water Dynamics in Materials

Two-dimensional double quantum (DQ) 1H MAS NMR was used to investigate different proton environments in a series of alkali (Na, K, Rb, Cs) [Nb6O19]8- Lindqvist salts, with the water and hydrogen-bound intercluster protons being clearly resolved. Through the analysis of the DQ 1H NMR spinning sideband pattern, it is possible to extract both the mean and distribution of the motionally averaged intramolecular homonuclear 1H-1H dipolar coupling for the different water environments and the intercluster protons. Motional order parameters for the water environments were then calculated from the averaged dipolar couplings. The influence of additional intermolecular dipolar couplings due to multispin interactions were simulated and discussed.

Multinuclear NMR investigations of the oxygen, water, and hydroxyl environments in sodium hexaniobate

Solid-state (1)H, (17)O MAS NMR, (1)H-(93)Nb TRAPDOR NMR, and (1)H double quantum 2D MAS NMR experiments were used to characterize the oxygen, water, and hydroxyl environments in the monoprotonated hexaniobate material, Na(7)[HNb(6)O(19)].15H(2)O. These solid-state NMR experiments demonstrate that the proton is located on the bridging oxygen of the [Nb(6)O(19)](8-) cluster. The solid-state NMR results also show that the NbOH protons are spatially isolated from similar protons, but undergo proton exchange with the water species located in the crystal lattice. On the basis of double quantum (1)H MAS NMR measurements, it was determined that the water species in the crystal lattice have restricted motional dynamics. Two-dimensional (1)H-(17)O MAS NMR correlation experiments show that these restricted waters are preferentially associated with the bridging oxygen. Solution (17)O NMR experiments show that the hydroxyl proton is also attached to the bridging oxygen for the compound in solution. In addition, solution (17)O NMR kinetic studies for the hexaniobate allowed the measurement of relative oxygen exchange rates between the bridging, terminal, and hydroxyl oxygen and the oxygen of the solvent as a function of pH and temperature. These NMR experiments are some of the first investigations into the proton location, oxygen and proton exchange processes, and water dynamics for a base stable polyoxoniobate material, and they provide insight into the chemistry and reactivity of these materials.

Rotor-encoded heteronuclear MQ MAS NMR spectroscopy of half-integer quadrupolar and spin I=1/2 nuclei

A new two-dimensional heteronuclear multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning (MQ MAS) experiment is presented which combines high resolution for the half-integer quadrupolar nucleus with information about the dipolar coupling between the quadrupolar nucleus and a spin I=1/2 nucleus. Homonuclear MQ coherence is initially created for the half-integer quadrupolar nucleus by a single pulse as in a standard MQ MAS experiment. REDOR recoupling of the heteronuclear dipolar coupling then allows the creation of a heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence comprising multiple- and single-quantum coherence of the quadrupolar and spin I=1/2 nucleus, respectively, which evolves during t1. Provided that the t1 increment is not rotor synchronized, rotor-encoded spinning-sideband patterns are observed in the indirect dimension. Simulated spectra for an isolated IS spin pair show that these patterns depend on the recoupling time, the magnitude of the dipolar coupling, the quadrupolar parameters, as well as the relative orientation of the quadrupolar and dipolar principal axes systems. Spectra are presented for Na2HPO4, with the heteronuclear 23Na-1HMQ MAS experiments beginning with the excitation of 23Na (spin I=3/2) three-quantum coherence. Coherence counting experiments demonstrate that four- and two-quantum coherences evolve during t1. The heteronuclear spinning-sideband patterns observed for the three-spin H-Na-H system associated with the Na(2) site are analyzed. For an IS2 system, simulated spectra show that, considering the free parameters, the spinning-sideband patterns are particularly sensitive to only, first, the angle between the two IS internuclear vectors and, second, the two heteronuclear dipolar couplings. It is demonstrated that the proton localization around the Na(2) site according to the literature crystal structure of Na2HPO4 is erroneous. Instead, the experimental data is consistent with two alternative different structural arrangements, whereby either there is a deviation of 10 degrees from linearity for the case of two identical Na-H distances, or there is a linear arrangement, but the two Na-H distances are different. Furthermore, the question of the origin of spinning-sidebands in the (homonuclear) MQ MAS experiment is revisited. It is shown that the asymmetric experimental MQ sideband pattern observed for the low-C(Q) Na(2) site in Na(2)HPO4 can only be explained by considering the 23Na chemical shift anisotropy.

An investigation of the hydrogen-bonding structure in bilirubin by 1H double-quantum magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR spectroscopy

The complex hydrogen-bonding arrangement in the biologically important molecule bilirubin IXalpha is probed by using 1H double-quantum (DQ) magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. Employing fast MAS (30 kHz) and a high magnetic field (16.4 T), three low-field resonances corresponding to the different hydrogen-bonding protons are resolved in a 1H MAS NMR spectrum of bilirubin. These resonances are assigned on the basis of the proton-proton proximities identified from a two-dimensional rotor-synchronized 1H DQ MAS NMR spectrum. An analysis of 1H DQ MAS spinning-sideband patterns for the NH protons in bilirubin allows the quantitative determination of proton-proton distances and the geometry. The validity of this procedure is proven by simulated spectra for a model three-spin system, which show that the shortest distance can be determined to a very high degree of accuracy. The distance between the lactam and pyrrole NH protons in bilirubin is determined to be 0.186 +/- 0.002 nm (corresponding to a dominant dipolar coupling constant of 18.5 +/- 0.5 kHz). The analysis also yields a distance between the lactam NH and carboxylic acid OH protons of 0.230 +/- 0.008 nm (corresponding to a perturbing dipolar coupling constant of 9.9 +/- 1.0 kHz) and an H-H-H angle of 122 +/- 4 degrees. Finally, a comparison of 1H DQ MAS spinning-sideband patterns for bilirubin and its dimethyl ester reveals a significantly longer distance between the two NH protons in the latter case.
