Abstract
The present paper is devoted to the simulation of (integral and dispersed) pump-probe signals in the nonperturbative regime for a series of material systems with multiple electronic states and excited-state absorption. We show that strong-pump strong-probe spectroscopy permits the probing of vibrational wavepackets in high-lying and/or short-lived excited electronic states with a time resolution which is not limited by the pulse durations. The field strength can be regarded as an additional experimentally controllable parameter, which can be tuned to maximize the spectroscopic information for a given material system.

Abstract
The direct manipulation of charge oscillations has emerged as a new perspective in chemical reaction control. Here, we demonstrate, in a joint experimental and theoretical study, that the electron dynamics of a molecule is efficiently steered by controlling the interplay of a driving femtosecond laser pulse with the photoinduced charge oscillation. These oscillations have a typical Bohr period of around 1 fs for valence electrons; therefore, control has to be exerted on a shorter time scale. Specifically, we show how precision pulse shaping is used to manipulate the coupled electron and nuclear dynamics in order to address different bound electronic target states in a molecule. We present a strong-field coherent control mechanism which is understood in terms of a simple classical picture and at the same time verified by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. This mechanism is universally applicable and opens a wide spectrum of applications in the reaction control of complex systems.

Abstract
By dynamic Stark shift using strong nonresonant pulses, we show that it is in principle possible to prepare arbitrary superposition states of mixed multiplicity. By a proper choice of parameters, the transfer of population is shown to follow the Rabi formula, where the initial and target states are now vibrational states of two light-induced molecular potentials of different multiplicity. Starting from nonstationary wave packets, the spin transfer can proceed via parallel transfer using a single pulse or by sequential transfer using a pulse sequence. A simple model is proposed to analyze the properties of both schemes and the feasibility of their experimental implementation for spin-orbit transitions in Rb2.

Abstract
We review the progress in controlling quantum dynamical processes in the condensed phase with femtosecond laser pulses. Due to its high particle density the condensed phase has both high relevance and appeal for chemical synthesis. Thus, in recent years different methods have been developed to manipulate the dynamics of condensed-phase systems by changing one or multiple laser pulse parameters. Single-parameter control is often achieved by variation of the excitation pulse's wavelength, its linear chirp or its temporal subpulse separation in case of pulse sequences. Multiparameter control schemes are more flexible and provide a much larger parameter space for an optimal solution. This is realized in adaptive femtosecond quantum control, in which the optimal solution is iteratively obtained through the combination of an experimental feedback signal and an automated learning algorithm. Several experiments are presented that illustrate the different control concepts and highlight their broad applicability. These fascinating achievements show the continuous progress on the way towards the control of complex quantum reactions in the condensed phase.

Abstract
By controlling nonresonant dynamic Stark shifts it is possible to effectively decouple the intramolecular couplings of simple molecules. We have illustrated this effect in the 1 (1)Sigma(u)-->1 (3)Pi(u) transition in Rb(2). The laser scheme implies two important control knobs: the laser frequency, which must be chosen to avoid both single and multiphoton resonances and to select different electronic environments for the singlet and triplet states, and the pulse intensity, which must amplify the asymmetry in the dynamic polarizabilities that allows the decoupling, avoiding undesired strong-pulse effects. The mechanism of the scheme implies not only brute-force energy shifts but also light-induced reshaping of the potentials to avoid the undesired crossings. Quantitative aspects of the method are analyzed by using molecular models of increasing complexity for Rb(2).

Abstract
▪ Abstract We review prototype studies in the area of quantum control with femtosecond lasers. We restrict this discussion to atoms and diatomics under gas-phase collision-free conditions to allow for a comparison between theory and experiment. Both the perturbative regime and the nonperturbative regime of the light-matter interaction are addressed. To that end, atomic/molecular beam techniques are combined together with femtosecond laser techniques and energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ion detection. Highly detailed information on the laser-induced quantum dynamics is extracted with the help of kinetic energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract
We report for the first time the proper conditions to observe Autler-Townes splitting (ac-Stark splitting) from vibrationally coherent states belonging to the different electronic terms of a diatomic molecule. Wave packet dynamics simulations demonstrate that such a process is feasible by multiphoton resonance ionization of the molecule Na2 with a single ultrashort intense laser pulse. With the ultrahigh time resolution of a femtosecond laser pulse, one can directly measure the absolute value of the transition dipole moment between any kinds of molecular states by this kind of Autler-Townes splitting, which is a function of the internuclear distance R.

Abstract
The use of photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) as a probe in short-pulse, pump-probe scenarios is reviewed. We focus on concepts, on the insight that can be gained through theoretical analysis, on applications, and on future opportunities. Time-resolved PADs are sensitive to both the time-evolving rotational composition of wavepackets and their time-evolving electronic symmetry. The former feature renders this observable a potential probe of molecular structure, intensity effects, and rotational perturbations. The latter feature renders the PAD a potential probe of radiationless transitions.
