Ligand-to-ligand charge transfer states and photochemical bond homolysis in metalcarbon bonded platinum complexes

Photoinduced Group Transposition via Iridium-Nitrenoid Leading to Amidative Inner-Sphere Aryl Migration

We herein report a fundamental mechanistic investigation into photochemical metal-nitrenoid generation and inner-sphere transposition reactivity using organometallic photoprecursors. By designing Cp*Ir(hydroxamate)(Ar) complexes, we induced photo-initiated ligand activation, allowing us to explore the amidative σ(Ir-aryl) migration reactivity. A combination of experimental mechanistic studies, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the metal-to-ligand charge transfer enables the σ(N-O) cleavage, followed by Ir-acylnitrenoid generation. The final inner-sphere σ(Ir-aryl) group migration results in a net amidative group transposition.

Metal-Metal Cooperation in the Oxidation of a Flapping Platinum Butterfly by Haloforms: Experimental and Theoretical Evidence

The model 1-DFT for the butterfly complex [{Pt(C^∧C*)(μ-pz)}₂] (1; HC^∧C* = 1-(4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene) shows two minima in the potential energy surface of the ground state in acetone solution: the butterfly-wing-spreading molecules 1-s, (d_Pt-Pt ≈ 3.20 Å) and the wing-folding molecules 1-f (d_Pt-Pt ≤ 3.00 Å). Both minima are very close in energy (ΔG° = 1.7 kcal/mol) and are connected through a transition state, which lies only 1.9 kcal/mol above 1-s and 0.2 kcal/mol above 1-f. These very low barriers support a fast interconversion process, resembling a butterfly flapping, and the presence of both conformers in acetone solution. However, the 1-f ratio is so low that it is undetectable in the excitation and emission spectra of 1 in 2-MeTHF of diluted solutions (10^-5 M) at 77 K, while it is seen in more concentrated solutions (10^-3 M). In acetone solution, 1 undergoes a [2c, 2e] oxidation by CHX₃ (X = Cl, Br) in the sunlight to render the Pt₂(III,III) compounds [{Pt(C^∧C*)(μ-pz)X)}₂] (X = Cl (2-Cl), Br (2-Br)). In concentrated solutions, 1 can react with CHCl₃ under blue light to give 2-Cl and with CHBr₃ in the dark, the latter rendering the compound [BrPt(C^∧C*)(μ-pz)₂Pt(C^∧C*)CHBr₂] (3-Br) or mixtures of 2-Br and 3-Br if the reaction is performed under an argon atmosphere or in the air, respectively. Mechanistic studies showed that in concentrated solutions the oxidation processes follow a radical mechanism being the MMLCT-based species 1-f, those which trigger the reaction of 1 with CHBr₃ and CHCl₃. In the ground state (S_0f), it promotes the thermal oxidation of 1 by CHBr₃ and in the first singlet excited state (S_1f) the blue-light-driven photooxidation of 1 by CHCl₃. Complexes, 2-Cl, 2-Br, and 3-Br were selectively obtained and fully characterized, showing Pt-Pt distances (ca. 2.6 Å) shorter than that of the starting complex, 1. They are, together with the analogous [{Pt(C^∧C*)(μ-pz)I)}₂] and [IPt(C^∧C*)(μ-pz)₂Pt(C^∧C*)CHI₂], the only dinuclear metal-metal-bonded Pt^III(μ-pz)₂Pt^III compounds reported to date.

Oxidation of Half-Lantern Pt2(II,II) Compounds by Halocarbons. Evidence of Dioxygen Insertion into a Pt(III)-CH3 Bond

The half-lantern compound [{Pt(bzq)(μ-N^S)}2] (1) [bzq = benzo[h]quinoline, HN^S = 2-mercaptopyrimidine (C4H3N2HS)] reacts with CH3I and haloforms CHX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) to give the corresponding oxidized diplatinum(III) derivatives [{Pt(bzq)(μ-N^S)X}2] (X = Cl 2a, Br 2b, I 2c). These compounds exhibit half-lantern structures with short intermetallic distances (∼2.6 Å) due to Pt-Pt bond formation. The halogen abstraction mechanisms from the halocarbon molecules by the Pt2(II,II) compound 1 were investigated. NMR spectroscopic evidence using labeled reagents support that in the case of (13)CH3I the reaction initiates with an oxidative addition through an SN2 mechanism giving rise to the intermediate species [I(bzq)Pt(μ-N^S)2Pt(bzq)((13)CH3)}]. However, with haloforms the reactions proceed through a radical-like mechanism, thermally (CHBr3, CHI3) or photochemically (CHCl3) activated, giving rise to mixtures of species [X(bzq)Pt(μ-N^S)2Pt(bzq)R] (3a-c) and [X(bzq)Pt(μ-N^S)2Pt(bzq)X] (2a-c). In these cases the presence of O2 favors the formation of species 2 over 3. Transformation of 3 into 2 was possible upon irradiation with UV light. In the case of [I(bzq)Pt(μ-N^S)2Pt(bzq)((13)CH3)}] (3d), in the presence of O2 the formation of the unusual methylperoxo derivative [I(bzq)Pt(μ-N^S)2Pt(bzq)(O-O(13)CH3)}] (4d) was detected, which in the presence of (13)CH3I rendered the final product [{Pt(bzq)(μ-N^S)I}2] (2c) and (13)CH3OH.

DFT and TD-DFT Calculations on the Electronic Structures and Spectroscopic Properties of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes

The electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of the three tridentate cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes Pt(N/\N/\C)C(triple bond)CPh (N/\N/\CH = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (1), Pt(N/\N/\S)C(triple bond)CPh (N/\N/\SH = 6-thienyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (2), and Pt(N/\N/\O)C(triple bond)CPh (N/\N/\OH = 6-furyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (3) were investigated theoretically using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The geometric structures of the complexes in the ground and excited states were explored at the B3LYP and UB3LYP levels, respectively. The absorption and emission spectra of the complexes in CH2Cl2 and CH3CN solutions were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with the PCM solvent model. The calculated energies of the lowest singlet state and lowest triplet state in the three complexes are in good agreement with the results of experimental absorption and luminescence studies. All of the lowest-lying transitions were categorized as LLCT combined with MLCT transitions. The 623-nm emission of 1 from the 3A' --> 1A' transition was assigned as 3LLCT and 3MLCT transitions, whereas the 657- and 681-nm emissions of 2 and 3, respectively, were attributed to 3ILCT perturbed by 3MLCT transitions. NLO response calculations revealed that the nonzero values of the static first hyperpolarizability (beta0) for 1-3 are greatly enhanced through the introduction of the metal Pt(II) into the cyclometalated ligands, an effect that is determined by MLCT and LLCT transitions.

Luminescence Ranging from Red to Blue: A Series of Copper(I)−Halide Complexes Having Rhombic {Cu2(μ-X)2} (X = Br and I) Units with N-Heteroaromatic Ligands

A series of Cu(I) complexes formulated as [Cu(2)(mu-X)(2)(PPh(3))(L)(n)] were prepared with various mono- and bidentate N-heteroaromatic ligands (X = Br, I; L = 4,4'-bipyridine, pyrazine, pyrimidine, 1,5-naphthyridine, 1,6-naphthyridine, quinazoline, N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine, 3-benzoylpyridine, 4-benzoylpyridine; n = 1, 2). Single-crystal structure analyses revealed that all the complexes have planar {Cu(2)X(2)} units. Whereas those with monodentate N-heteroaromatic ligands afforded discrete dinuclear complexes, bidentate ligands formed infinite chain complexes with the ligands bridging the dimeric units. The long Cu...Cu distances (2.872-3.303 A) observed in these complexes indicated no substantial interaction between the two Cu(I) ions. The complexes showed strong emission at room temperature as well as at 80 K in the solid state. The emission spectra and lifetimes in the microsecond range were measured at room temperature and at 80 K. The emissions of the complexes varied from red to blue by the systematic selection of the N-heteroaromatic ligands (lambda(em)(max): 450 nm (L = N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine) to 707 nm (L = pyrazine)), and were assigned to metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited states with some mixing of the halide-to-ligand (XL) CT characters. The emission energies were successfully correlated with the reduction potentials of the coordinated N-heteroaromatic ligands, which were estimated by applying a simple modification based on the calculated stabilization energies of the ligands by protonation.

Photoinduced electron transfer in platinum(II) terpyridinyl acetylide complexes connected to a porphyrin unit

A series of six new dyads consisting of a zinc or magnesium porphyrin appended to a platinum terpyridine acetylide complex via a para-phenylene bisacetylene spacer are described. Different substituents on the 4' position of the terpyridinyl ligand were explored (OC7H15, PO3Et2, and H). The ground-state electronic properties of the dyads are studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy and electrochemistry, and they indicate some electronic interactions between the porphyrin subunit and the platinum complex. The photophysical properties of these dyads were investigated by steady-state, time-resolved, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in N,N-dimethylformamide solution. Excitation of the porphyrin unit leads to a very rapid electron transfer (2-20 ps) to the nearby platinum complex followed by an ultrafast charge recombination, thus preventing any observation of the charge separated state. The variation in the rate of the photoinduced electron transfer in the series of dyads is consistent with Marcus theory. The results underscore the potential of the para-phenylene bisacetylene bridge to mediate a rapid electron transfer over a long donor-acceptor distance.

Theoretical Studies of the Spectroscopic Properties of [Pt(trpy)C⋮CR]+ (trpy = 2,2‘,6‘,2‘ ‘-Terpyridine; R = H, CH2OH, and C6H5)

Electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of [Pt(trpy)C[triple bond]CR](+) (trpy = 2,2', 6',2' '-terpyridine; R = H (1), CH(2)OH (2), and C(6)H(5) (3) ) are studied by ab initio and DFT methods. The ground- and excited-state structures are optimized by the MP2 and CIS methods, respectively. The absorption and emission spectra in the dichloromethane solution are obtained by using TD-DFT (B3LYP) method associated with the PCM model. The calculations indicate that, for 1-3, the variation of the substituents on the acetylide ligand only slightly changes their structures in ground and excited states but leads to a sizable difference in the electronic structures. In both cases of absorption and emission, the energy levels of HOMOs for 1-3 are sensitive to the substituents on acetylide ligand and increase obviously with the introduction of the electron-donating groups; however, those of trpy-based LUMOs vary slightly. The lowest-energy emissions are attributed to triplet acetylide/Pt --> trpy charge transfer ((3)LLCT/(3)MLCT) transitions and the lowest-energy absorptions and emissions for 1-3 are red-shifted on the order of 1 < 2 < 3 when the electron-donating groups are introduced into the acetylide ligand. By comparison of the results obtained by using different functionals in TD-DFT method, the calculations indicate that the exchange-correlation functionals (B3LYP, B3P86 and B3PW91) involving Becke three parameter hybrid functionals are appropriate for the terpyridyl platinum(II) acetylide complexes to get the relatively satisfactory results for the absorption spectra. The underestimated excitation energies of lowest-lying absorption bands are probably due to insufficient flexibility in TD-DFT method to describe states with large charge transfer.

Light-Emitting Tridentate Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes Containing σ-Alkynyl Auxiliaries: Tuning of Photo- and Electrophosphorescence

The synthesis and structural, photophysical, electrochemical, and electroluminescent properties of a class of platinum(II) complexes bearing sigma-alkynyl ancillary ligands, namely [(C/N/N)Pt(C[triple bond]C]nR] [H(C/N/N) = 6-aryl-2,2'-bipyridine; n = 1-4; R = aryl, alkyl, or trimethylsilyl], have been studied. Substituents with different steric and electronic properties were introduced into the tridentate cyclometalating and arylacetylide ligands, and the pi-conjugation length of the oligoynyl moiety was homologously extended from ethynyl to octatetraynyl. The X-ray crystal structures of several derivatives confirm the Pt-(CC) ligation and reveal various intermolecular interactions, such as pi-pi, Pt...Pt, and C-H...F-C. The complexes display good thermal stability and intense phosphorescence in fluid and glassy solutions with high quantum yields and microsecond lifetimes. Their emission energies are sensitive to solvent polarity, the electronic affinities of the substituents on both the cyclometalating and arylacetylide groups, and the length of the oligoynyl ligand. By choosing appropriate cyclometalating and sigma-alkynyl ligands, the emission color of this class of platinum(II) complexes can be tuned from green-yellow to saturated red. In addition to (3)MLCT [Pt(5d) --> pi*(C/N/N)] and (3)IL(C/N/N), intriguing (3)IL(alkynyl) excited states localized on -(C[triple bond]C)(4)- and -(C[triple bond]Cpyrenyl-1) moieties that afford narrow-bandwidth emissions have been observed. Selected Pt(II) complexes were doped into the emissive region of multilayer, vapor-deposited organic light-emitting diodes. The tunable electrophosphorescence energy resembles that recorded in fluid solutions for these emitters, and the devices exhibit high luminance and efficiencies (up to 4.2 cd A(-1)).

A Luminescent Platinum(II) 2,6-Bis(N-pyrazolyl)pyridine Complex

Four platinum(II) cationic complexes were prepared with the mer-coordinating tridentate ligands 2,6-bis(N-pyrazolyl)pyridine (bpp) and 2,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-N-pyrazolyl)pyridine (bdmpp): [Pt(bpp)Cl]Cl.H(2)O; [Pt(bdmpp)Cl]Cl.H(2)O; [Pt(bpp)(Ph)](PF(6)); [Pt(bdmpp)(Ph)](PF(6)). The complexes were characterized by (1)H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry, and the structures of the bpp derivatives were determined by X-ray crystallography. [Pt(bpp)Cl]Cl.2H(2)O: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 11.3218(5) A, b = 6.7716(3) A, c = 20.6501(6) A, beta = 105.883(2) degrees, V = 1522.73(11) A(3), Z = 4. The square planar cations stack in a head-to-tail fashion to form a linear chain structure with alternating Pt...Pt distances of 3.39 and 3.41 A. [Pt(bpp)(Ph)](PF(6)).CH(3)CN: triclinic, P, a = 8.3620(3) A, b = 10.7185(4) A, c = 13.4273(5) A, alpha = 96.057(1) degrees, beta = 104.175(1) degrees, gamma = 110.046(1) degrees, V = 1072.16(7) A(3), Z = 2. Cyclic voltammograms indicate all four complexes undergo irreversible reductions between -1.0 and -1.3 V vs Ag/AgCl (0.1 M TBAPF(6)/CH(3)CN), attributable to ligand- and/or metal-centered processes. By comparison to related 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine complexes, the electrochemical and UV-visible absorption data are consistent with bpp being both a weaker sigma-donor and pi-acceptor than terpyridine. Solid samples of [Pt(bpp)(Ph)](PF(6)) at 77 K exhibit a remarkably intense, narrow emission centered at 655 nm, whereas the other three complexes exhibit only very weak emission.

Replacement of 2,2'-bipyridine by 1,4-diazabutadiene acceptor ligands: why the bathochromic shift for [(N empty set N)IrCl(C5Me5)]+ complexes but the hypsochromic shift for (N empty set N)Ir(C5Me5)?

Replacement of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) by substituted 1,4-diazabutadiene (R-DAB) alpha-diimine ligands N empty set N leads to a substantial hypsochromic shift of about 0.8 eV for the long-wavelength absorption band in compounds (N empty set N)Ir(C(5)Me(5)) but to a bathochromic absorption shift of about 0.4 eV for the complex ions [(N empty set N)IrCl(C(5)Me(5))](+). DFT calculations on model complexes based on experimental (R-DAB compounds) and geometry-optimized structures (bpy systems) reveal that the low-energy transitions of the cationic chloro complexes are largely of ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer character L'LCT (L = alpha-diimine, L' = Cl) whereas the neutral compounds exhibit pi --> pi transitions between the considerably mixed metal d(pi) and alpha-diimine pi orbitals. The much more pronounced metal-ligand orbital interaction for the R-DAB complexes causes the qualitatively different shifts on replacing the stronger basic bpy by the better pi-acceptors R-DAB. Only the LUMO of the neutral compounds is destabilized on replacement of bpy by R-DAB whereas the LUMO of [(N empty set N)IrCl(C(5)R'(5))](+) and both HOMOs are stabilized through this change.
