Transition metal tetrahydroborato complexes: an orbital interaction analysis of their structure and bonding

f-Block hydride complexes - synthesis, structure and reactivity

Complexes formed between the heaviest and lightest elements in the periodic table yield the f-block hydrides, a unique class of compounds with wide-ranging utility and interest, from catalysis to light-responsive materials and nuclear waste storage. Recent developments in syntheses and analytics, such as exploiting low-oxidation state metal ions and improvements in X-ray diffraction tools, have transformed our ability to understand, access and manipulate these important species. This perspective brings together insights from binary metal hydrides, with molecular solution phase studies on heteroleptic complexes and gas phase investigations. It aims to provide an overview of how the f-element influences hydride formation, structure and reactivity including the sometimes-surprising power of co-ligands to tune their behaviour towards a variety of applications.

Three-Center M-H-B Bonds Are Strong Field Interactions. Synthesis and Characterization of M(CH2NMe2BH3)3 Complexes of Titanium, Chromium, and Cobalt

We describe new compounds of stoichiometry M(CH2NMe2BH3)3 (M = Ti, Cr, and Co), each of which contains three chelating boranatodimethylaminomethyl (BDAM) ligands. In all three compounds, the BDAM anion, which is isoelectronic and isostructural with the neopentyl group, is bound to the metal center at one end by a metal-carbon σ bond and at the other by one three-center M-H-B interaction. The crystal structures show that the d1 titanium(III) compound is trigonal prismatic (or eight-coordinate, if two longer-ranged M···H interactions with the BH3 groups are included), whereas the d3 chromium(III) compound and the d6 cobalt(III) compounds are both fac-octahedral. The Cr and Co compounds exhibit two rapid dynamic processes in solution: exchange between the Δ and Λ enantiomers and exchange of the terminal and bridging hydrogen atoms on boron. For the Co complex, the barrier for Δ/Λ exchange (ΔG⧧298 = 10.1 kcal mol-1) is significantly smaller than those seen in other octahedral cobalt(III) compounds; DFT calculations suggest that Bailar twist and dissociative pathways for Δ/Λ exchange are both possible mechanisms. The UV-vis absorption spectra of the cobalt(III) and chromium(III) species show that the ligand field splittings Δo caused by the M-H-B interactions are unexpectedly large, thus placing them high on the spectrochemical series (near ammonia and alkyl groups); their nephelauxetic effect is also large. The DFT calculations suggest that these properties of M-H-B interactions are in part a consequence of their three-center nature, which delocalizes electron density away from the metal center and reduces electron-electron repulsions.

Synthesis and Chemistry of Dihydridoborate Group 7 Metal Complexes with Varied N,E-Chelated Ligands (E = O, NH, or S)

Several dihydridoborate group 7 metal complexes have been synthesized and their structural aspects have been described from various N,S-, N,N-, and N,O-chelated borate species, such as Na[(H₃B)mp] (mp = 2-mercaptopyridyl), Na[(H₃B)amt] (amt = 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl), Na[(H₃B)hp] (hp = 2-hydroxypyridyl), Na[(H₂B)bap] (bap = bis(2-aminopyridyl)), and Na[(H₂B)bdap] (bdap = bis(2,6-diaminopyridyl)). Room temperature photolysis of [M₂(CO)₁₀] (M = Mn or Re) with these borate species afforded dihydridoborate complexes [(CO)₃M(μ-H)₂BHL] 1-6 (1, M = Mn, L = mp; 2, M = Re, L = mp; 3, M = Mn, L = amt; 4, M = Mn, L = hp; 5, M = Mn, L = ap; 6, M = Mn, L = dap, ap = 2-aminopyridyl, dap = 2,6-diaminopyridyl). In complexes 1-3, the corresponding (H₂BHL) units are coordinated to the metal centers through the (κ³-H,H,S) mode. However, in complexes 4 and 5 (or 6), the connection is via (κ³-H,H,O) and (κ³-H,H,N) modes of coordination, respectively. Complexes 1 and 5 underwent hydroboration reactions with terminal alkynes that yielded trans-hydroborated species [Mn(CO)₃(μ-H)₂(NC₅H₄E)B(PhC═CH₂)] (7, E = S; 8, E = NH). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out to investigate the electronic structures of these dihydridoborate species as well as the nature of bonding in them.

Coordination mode and stability of the tetrahydroborate ligand in group 10 metal pincer complexes

The coordination mode of the BH₄^- ligand in transition metal tetrahydroborate complexes is mainly dominated by the nature of the metal centres. However, other factors can also play important roles sometimes. In order to rationalize the coordination modes and the stability of the BH₄^- ligand in group 10 metal tetrahydroborate pincer complexes, [2,6-(^tBu₂PO)₂C₆H₃]Pt(η¹-HBH₃) and [C₆H₄-o-(NCH₂P^tBu₂)₂B]M(η²-H₂BH₂) (M = Ni, Pt) were prepared and characterized. A structural comparison of [2,6-(^tBu₂PCH₂)₂C₆H₃]Ni(BH₄), [2,6-(^tBu₂PO)₂C₆H₃]M(BH₄) and [C₆H₄-o-(NCH₂P^tBu₂)₂B]M(BH₄) (M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) indicates that the M-P bond length, the P-M-P bite angle and the trans-influence of the central atom in the pincer platform also affect the coordination mode of the BH₄^- ligand. The nickel complexes tend to adopt a monodentate coordination mode while the palladium and platinum complexes can adopt either the monodentate or the bidentate mode depending on the structural features of the pincer platforms. Longer M-P bonds and smaller P-M-P bite angles favour the bidentate mode. The stability of the BH₄^- ligand is influenced by both the coordination mode and the nature of the metal centre. The BH₃ species is released more easily from complexes with less electron rich metal centres. Following the series of Ni, Pd, and Pt, complexes with the same pincer ligand more easily lose a BH₃ moiety.

Coordination-Induced Weakening of a C(sp3)-H Bond: Homolytic and Heterolytic Bond Strength of a CH-Ni Agostic Interaction

The scission of a C(sp³)-H bond to form a new metal-alkyl bond is a fundamental step in coordination chemistry and catalysis. However, the extent of C-H bond weakening when this moiety interacts with a transition metal is poorly understood and quantifying this phenomenon could provide insights into designing more efficient C-H functionalization catalysts. We present a nickel complex with a robust adamantyl reporter ligand that enables the measurement of C-H acidity (pK_a) and bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) for a C(sp³)-H agostic interaction, showing a decrease in pK_a by dozens of orders of magnitude and BDFE decrease of about 30 kcal/mol upon coordination. X-ray crystallographic data is provided for all molecules, including a distorted square planar Ni^III metalloradical and "doubly agostic" Ni^II(κ²-CH₂) complex.

Metal Borohydrides beyond Groups I and II: A Review

This review consists of a compilation of synthesis methods and several properties of borohydrides beyond Groups I and II, i.e., transition metals, main group, lanthanides, and actinides. The reported properties include crystal structure, decomposition temperature, ionic conductivity, photoluminescence, etc., when available. The compiled properties reflect the rich chemistry and possible borohydrides’ application in areas such as hydrogen storage, electronic devices that require an ionic conductor, catalysis, or photoluminescence. At the end of the review, two short but essential sections are included: a compilation of the decomposition temperature of all reported borohydrides versus the Pauling electronegativity of the cations, and a brief discussion of the possible reactions occurring during diborane emission, including some strategies to reduce this inconvenience, particularly for hydrogen storage purposes.

Adding to the Family of Copper Complexes Featuring Borohydride Ligands Based on 2-Mercaptopyridyl Units

Borohydride ligands featuring multiple pendant donor functionalities have been prevalent in the chemical literature for many decades now. More recent times has seen their development into new families of so-called soft scorpionates, for example, those featuring sulfur based donors. Despite all of these developments, those ligands containing just one pendant group are rare. This article explores one ligand family based on the 2-mercaptopyridine heterocycle. The coordination chemistry of the monosubstituted ligand, [H3B(mp)]− (mp = 2-mercaptopyridyl), has been explored. Reaction of Na[BH3(mp)] with one equivalent of Cu(I)Cl in the presence of either triphenylphosphine or tricyclohexylphosphine co-ligands leads to the formation of [Cu{H3B(mp)}(PR3)] (R = Ph, 1; Cy, 2), respectively. Structural characterization confirms a κ3-S,H,H coordination mode for the borohydride-based ligand within 1 and 2, involving a dihydroborate bridging interaction (BH2Cu) with the copper centers.

Synthesis, structural properties and reactivity of ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) tetrahydroborate

Non-covalent interactions determine the structure, crystal packing and reactivity of isolated ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) complexes. Bifurcate dihydrogen-bonded complexes are active intermediates of tetrahydroborate alcoholysis.

Elucidation of the Formation Mechanisms of the Octahydrotriborate Anion (B3H8-) through the Nucleophilicity of the B-H Bond

Boron compounds are well-known electrophiles. Much less known are their nucleophilic properties. By recognition of the nucleophilicity of the B-H bond, the formation mechanism of octahydrotriborate (B₃H₈^-) was elucidated on the bases of both experimental and computational investigations. Two possible routes from the reaction of BH₄^- and THF·BH₃ to B₃H₈^- were proposed, both involving the B₂H₆ and BH₄^- intermediates. The two pathways consist of a set of complicated intermediates, which can convert to each other reversibly at room temperature and can be represented by a reaction circle. Only under reflux can the B₂H₆ and BH₄^- intermediates be converted to B₂H₅^- and BH₃(H₂) via a high energy barrier, from which H₂ elimination occurs to yield the B₃H₈^- final product. The formation of B₂H₆ from THF·BH₃ by nucleophilic substitution of the B-H bond was captured and identified, and the reaction of B₂H₆ with BH₄^- to produce B₃H₈^- was confirmed experimentally. On the bases of the formation mechanisms of B₃H₈^-, we have developed a facile synthetic method for MB₃H₈ (M = Li and Na) in high yields by directly reacting the corresponding MBH₄ salts with THF·BH₃. In the new synthetic method for MB₃H₈, no electron carriers are needed, allowing convenient preparation of MB₃H₈ in large scales and paving the way for their wide applications.

Organometallic Zirconium Compounds in an Oxygen-Rich Coordination Environment: Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Tris(oxoimidazolyl)hydroboratozirconium Compounds

A series of tris(oxoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligands, which serve as L₂X [O₃] donors, have been employed to obtain organometallic zirconium compounds in an uncommon oxygen-rich coordination environment. For example, Cp[To^MeBenz]ZrCl₂ has been synthesized via the reaction of [To^MeBenz]Na with CpZrCl₃ and bears a structural resemblance to the bent metallocene dichloride derivative Cp₂ZrCl₂. In addition, the half-sandwich counterparts [To^MeBenz]ZrCl₃ and [To^But]ZrCl₃ have been obtained by metathesis of ZrCl₄ with [To^MeBenz]Na and [To^But]Na, respectively. The structurally related zirconium benzyl compounds [To^RBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₃ (R = Me, Bu^t, 1-Ad) have also been synthesized via the reactions of [To^RBenz]Tl with Zr(CH₂Ph)₄, and X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate that the benzyl ligands in these compounds are conformationally flexible and exhibit a large range of Zr-CH₂-Ph bond angles (94.7-131.7°). Protolytic cleavage of one of the benzyl ligands of [To^RBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₃ (R = Bu^t, 1-Ad) may be achieved by treatment with [PhNHMe₂][B(C₆F₅)₄] to generate {[To^RBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₂}[B(C₆F₅)₄], which are catalysts for the polymerization of ethylene. The molecular structure of the ether adduct, {[To^ButBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₂(OEt₂)}[B(C₆F₅)₄], has been determined by X-ray diffraction. In addition to the use of tris(oxoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligands, bis(oxoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligands have also been used to obtain zirconium benzyl compounds in oxygen-rich environments, namely, [Bo^MeBenz]₂Zr(CH₂Ph)₂ and [Bo^AdBenz]₂Zr(CH₂Ph)₂.

Mixed Allyl Rare-Earth Borohydride Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Application in (Co-)Polymerization Catalysis of Cyclic Esters

A series of new trivalent rare-earth allyl-borohydride complexes with the formula [RE(BH₄ )₂ (C₃ H₅ )(thf)_x ] (RE=Sc (1), x=2; RE=Y (2) and La (3), x=3) were synthesized by reaction of the corresponding rare-earth trisborohydrides [RE(BH₄ )₃ (thf)_x ] with half an equivalent of bis(allyl)magnesium. The complexes were fully characterized by determining their X-ray structure. Similar to their previously described Nd (4) and Sm (5) analogues, these complexes display a monomeric structure with two terminal trihapto BH₄ groups, one π-η³ allyl ligand, three THF molecules for complexes 2 and 3, and two THF molecules for complex 1. The catalytic behavior of complexes 1-5 toward the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (l-LA) and ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL) was assessed. The Nd complex featured the best activity toward l-LA (turnover frequency (TOF)=1300 h^-1 ) and the order was Nd>La>Sm>Y>Sc. Complexes 1-3 were found very active for the ROP of ϵ-CL (TOF=166 000 h^-1 ), which is in line with the already established exceptionnally high performance of complexes 4 and 5. With both monomers, it was shown that the borohydride moiety was the preferentially initiating group, rather than the allyl one. The random copolymerization of l-LA and ϵ-CL was performed with complexes 1-5, in the absence or in the presence of benzyl alcohol as a chain-transfer agent, affording copolymers with ϵ-caprolactone up to 62 % inserted. The copolymers synthesized display a variety of microstructures, that is, blocky, random, or quasi-alternating.

Mechanisms for dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of N-heterocycles using PNP-pincer-supported iron catalysts: a density functional study

The bifunctionality of Fe-PNP plays a role in stabilizing the ion-pair complex in the dehydrogenation via a hydrogen bonding and a C–H agostic interaction.

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Co(II) and Ni(II) PCP Pincer Borohydride Complexes

The 15e square-planar complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (2a) and [Co(PCP-tBu)Cl] (2b), respectively, react readily with NaBH4 to afford complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Co(PCP-tBu)(η2-BH4)] (4b) in high yields, as confirmed by IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and elemental analysis. The borohydride ligand is symmetrically bound to the cobalt center in η2-fashion. These compounds are paramagnetic with effective magnetic moments of 2.0(1) and 2.1(1) μB consistent with a d7 low-spin system corresponding to one unpaired electron. None of these complexes reacted with CO2 to give formate complexes. For structural and reactivity comparisons, we prepared the analogous Ni(II) borohydride complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) via two different synthetic routes. One utilizes [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)Cl] (3) and NaBH4, the second one makes use of the hydride complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)H] (6) and BH3·THF. In both cases, 5 is obtained in high yields. In contrast to 4a and 4b, the borohydride ligand is asymmetrically bound to the nickel center but still in an η2-mode. [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) loses readily BH3 at elevated temperatures in the presence of NEt3 to form 6. Complexes 5 and 6 are both diamagnetic and were characterized by a combination of 1H, 13C{1H}, and 31P{1H} NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Additionally, the structure of these compounds was established by X-ray crystallography. Complexes 5 and 6 react with CO2 to give the formate complex [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(OC(C=O)H] (7). The extrusion of BH3 from [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) with the aid of NH3 to yield the respective hydride complexes [Co(PCPMe-iPr)H] and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)H] (6) and BH3NH3 was investigated by DFT calculations showing that formation of the Ni hydride is thermodynamically favorable, whereas the formation of the Co(II) hydride, in agreement with the experiment, is unfavorable. The electronic structures and the bonding of the borohydride ligand in [Co(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (4a) and [Ni(PCPMe-iPr)(η2-BH4)] (5) were established by DFT computations.

Probing mesitylborane and mesitylborate ligation within the coordination sphere of Cp*Ru(P(i)Pr3)+: a combined synthetic, X-ray crystallographic, and computational study

The reaction of Cp*Ru(P(i)Pr(3))Cl (1) with MesBH(2) (Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) afforded the mesitylborate complex Cp*Ru(P(i)Pr(3))(BH(2)MesCl) (2, 66%). Exposure of 2 to the chloride abstracting agent LiB(C(6)F(5))(4)·2.5OEt(2) provided [Cp*Ru(P(i)Pr(3))(BH(2)Mes)](+)B(C(6)F(5))(4)(-) (3, 54%), which features an unusual η(2)-B-H monoborane ligand. The related borate complex Cp*Ru(P(i)Pr(3))(BH(3)Mes) (5, 65%) was prepared from 1 and LiH(3)BMes. Attempts to effect the insertion of unsaturated organic substrates into the B-H bonds of 3 were unsuccessful, and efforts to dehydrohalogenate 2 using KO(t)Bu instead afforded the mesitylborate complex Cp*(P(i)Pr(3))Ru(BH(2)MesOH) (6, 48%). Treatment of 1 with benzyl potassium generated an intermediate hydridoruthenium complex (7) resulting from dehydrogenation of a P(i)Pr fragment, which in turn was observed to react with MesBH(2) to afford the mesitylborate complex Cp*(P((i)Pr)(2)(CH(3)CCH(2)))Ru(BH(3)Mes) (8, 47%). Crystallographic characterization data are provided for 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8. A combined X-ray crystallographic and density functional theory (DFT) investigation of 3 and 5, using Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) and Atoms in Molecules (AIM) analysis, revealed that 3 and 5 are best described as donor-acceptor complexes between a Cp*(P(i)Pr(3))Ru(+) fragment and a bis(η(2)-B-H) coordinating mesitylborane(borate) ligand. Significant σ-donation from the B-H bonds into the Ru(II) center exists as evidenced by the NBO populations, bond orders, and AIM delocalization indices. In the case of 3, the vacant p orbital on boron is stabilized by Ru→B π back-donation as well as by resonance with the mesityl group.

Lanthanide(III) and actinide(III) complexes [M(BH4)2 (THF)5][BPh4] and [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)][BPh4] (M = Nd, Ce, U): synthesis, crystal structure, and density functional theory investigation of the covalent contribution to metal-borohydride bonding

Treatment of [M(BH4)3(THF)3] with NEt3HBPh4 in THF afforded the cationic complexes [M(BH4)2(THF)5][BPh4] [M = U (1), Nd (2), Ce (3)] which were transformed into [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)][BPh4] [M = U (4), Nd (5), Ce (6)] in the presence of 18-crown-6; [U(BH4)2(18-thiacrown-6)][BPh4] (7) was obtained from 1 and 18-thiacrown-6 in tetrahydro-thiophene. Compounds 1, 3.C4H8S, 4.THF, 5, and 6.THF exhibit a penta- or hexagonal bipyramidal crystal structure with the two terdentate borohydride ligands in apical positions; the BH4 groups in the crystals of 7.C4H8S are in relative cis positions, and the thiacrown-ether presents a saddle shape, with two diametrically opposite sulfur atoms bound to uranium in trans positions. The crystal structures of these complexes, as well as those of previously reported [M(BH4)2(THF)5]+ cations, do not reveal any clear-cut lanthanide(III)/actinide(III) differentiation. The structural data obtained for [M(BH4)2(18-crown-6)]+ (M = U, Ce) by relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations are indicative of a small shortening of the U...B with respect to the Ce...B distance, which is accompanied by a lengthening of the U-Hb bonds and an opening of the Hb-B-Hb angle (Hb = bridging hydrogen atom of the eta3-BH4 ligand). The Mulliken population analysis and the natural bond orbital analysis indicate that the BH4 -->M(III) donation is greater for M = U than for M = Ce, as well as the overlap population of the M-Hb bond, thus showing a better interaction between the uranium 5f orbitals and the Hb atoms. The more covalent character of the B-H-U three-center two-electron bond was confirmed by the molecular orbital (MO) analysis. Three MOs represent the pi bonding interactions between U(III) and the three Hb atoms with significant 6d and 5f orbital contributions. These MOs in the cerium(III) complex exhibit a much lesser metallic weight with practically no participation of the 4f orbitals.

High-spin and low-spin iron(ii) complexes with facially-coordinated borohydride ligands

Rare examples of monometallic high-spin and low-spin L3Fe(H3BH) complexes have been characterized, where the two L3 ligands are [TpPh2] and [PhBP3] ([TpPh2] = [HB(3,5-Ph2pz)3]- and [PhBP3] = [PhB(CH2PPh2)3]-). The structures are reported wherein the borohydride ligand is facially coordinated to the iron center in each complex. Density functional methods have been employed to explain the bonding in these unusual iron(II) centers. Despite the differences in spin states, short Fe-B distances are observed in both complexes and there is significant theoretical evidence to support a substantial bonding interaction between the iron and boron nuclei. In light of this interaction, we suggest that these complexes can be described as (L3)Fe(eta4-H3BH) complexes.
