Aplication of the statistical experimental design to optimize mine-impacted water (MIW) remediation using shrimp-shell

Mine-impacted water (MIW) is one of the most serious mining problems and has a high negative impact on water resources and aquatic life. The main characteristics of MIW are a low pH (between 2 and 4) and high concentrations of SO₄^2- and metal ions (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, Al, Cr, Mn, Mg, etc.), many of which are toxic to ecosystems and human life. Shrimp shell was selected as a MIW treatment agent because it is a low-cost metal-sorbent biopolymer with a high chitin content and contains calcium carbonate, an acid-neutralizing agent. To determine the best metal-removal conditions, a statistical study using statistical planning was carried out. Thus, the objective of this work was to identify the degree of influence and dependence of the shrimp-shell content for the removal of Fe, Al, Mn, Co, and Ni from MIW. In this study, a central composite rotational experimental design (CCRD) with a quadruplicate at the midpoint (2²) was used to evaluate the joint influence of two formulation variables-agitation and the shrimp-shell content. The statistical results showed the significant influence (p < 0.05) of the agitation variable for Fe and Ni removal (linear and quadratic form, respectively) and of the shrimp-shell content variable for Mn (linear form), Al and Co (linear and quadratic form) removal. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) for Al, Co, and Ni removal showed that the model is valid at the 95% confidence interval and that no adjustment needed within the ranges evaluated of agitation (0-251.5 rpm) and shrimp-shell content (1.2-12.8 g L^-1). The model required adjustments to the 90% and 75% confidence interval for Fe and Mn removal, respectively. In terms of efficiency in removing pollutants, it was possible to determine the best experimental values of the variables considered as 188 rpm and 9.36 g L^-1 of shrimp-shells.

Probing the application of a zirconium coagulant in a coagulation–ultrafiltration process: observations on organics removal and membrane fouling

The Zr coagulant offered improved turbidity and organics removal and was beneficial in alleviating membrane fouling, particularly the irreversible fouling.

Aluminum as a toxicant

Although aluminum is the most abundant metal in nature, it has no known biological function. However, it is known that there is a causal role for aluminum in dialysis encephalopathy, microcytic anemia, and osteomalacia. Aluminum has also been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) even though this issue is controversial. The exact mechanism of aluminum toxicity is not known but accumulating evidence suggests that the metal can potentiate oxidative and inflammatory events, eventually leading to tissue damage. This review encompasses the general toxicology of aluminum with emphasis on the potential mechanisms by which it may accelerate the progression of chronic age-related neurodegenerative disorders.

Tb-MOF: a naked-eye and regenerable fluorescent probe for selective and quantitative detection of Fe3+and Al3+ions

A unique Tb-MOF fluorescent probe has features that are visible to the naked-eye and can be regenerated; it presents high selectivity and sensitivity to the quantitative detection of Fe³⁺and Al³⁺ions.

Visual detection of Al(3+) ions using conjugated copolymer-ATP supramolecular complex

A colorimetric Al(3+) sensor based on fluorescence recovery of a conjugated copolymer-ATP complex is proposed. An optimized ratio of two polythiophene (PT) monomers is utilized to synthesize copolymer (CP) that yielded maximized colorimetric response for Al(3+) in deionized (DI) and tap water. The electrostatic disassembly of CP-ATP upon addition of Al(3+) led to an evident visual color change. The lowest concentration of Al(3+) for naked eye observation is around 4 μM, which is below the threshold levels in drinking water according to European Economic Community (EEC) standard. Besides, the proposed assay showed a similar response to Al(3+) in tap water. The proposed methodology showed selective and sensitive detection for Al(3+) in analytically relevant concentration ranges without involving sophisticated instrumentation, illustrating the applicability for on-site drinking water monitoring.

Genotoxic effects of aluminum, iron and manganese in human cells and experimental systems: A review of the literature

There is considerable evidence indicating an increase in neurodegenerative disorders in industrialized countries. The clinical symptoms and the possible mutagenic effects produced by acute poisoning and by chronic exposure to metals are of major interest. This study is a review of the data found concerning the genotoxic potential of three metals: aluminum (Al), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), with emphasis on their action on human cells.

Impact of aluminum on the oxidation of lipids and enzymatic lipolysis in monomolecular films at the air/water interface

There is evidence that serious pathologies are associated with aluminum (Al). In the present work, the influence of Al on enzymatic lipolysis was studied with the aim to get more insight into the possible link between the Al-induced membrane modification and the cytotoxicity of the trivalent cation (AlIII). Lipid monolayers were used as model membranes. The monomolecular film technique allowed monitoring the Al-dependent modifications of the lipid monolayer properties and enzyme kinetics. Two enzymes, namely, Candida rugosa lipase and a calcium (CaII)-dependent phospholipase A2 from porcine pancreas, were used to catalyze the lipolysis of triglyceride and phosphoglyceride monolayers, respectively. The results obtained show that Al modifies both the monolayer structure and enzymatic reaction rates. While the enzymes used in this study can be considered as probes detecting lipid membrane properties, it cannot be excluded that in physiological conditions modulation of the enzyme action by the Al-bound membranes is among the reasons for Al toxicity.

Interactions of bovine serum albumin with aluminum polyoxocations and aluminum hydroxide

Interactions of aqueous solutions of aluminum polyoxocations (Al13-mers and Al30-mers) and aluminum hydroxide suspensions of varying particle sizes (26, 55, and 82 nm) with a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), have been investigated using potentiometry, conductometry, viscometry, 27Al solution NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential measurements, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Increasing amounts of BSA partially convert Al13-mers and, to a larger extent, Al30-mers into amorphous Al hydroxide without gel formation. At the same time, BSA molecules can form unstable aggregates in the Al polyoxocation solutions which redisperse easily upon standing. In the case of Al hydroxide sols, BSA addition causes substantial gelation, the extent of which is proportional to the amount of BSA added and inversely related to the Al hydroxide particle size. Upon freeze-drying or centrifugation of Al species-BSA solutions, an interesting sheetlike morphology with 150-200 nm wide nanoribbons is observed for pure Al hydroxide nanoparticles and for solutions of Al polyoxocations with the highest amount of BSA studied. On the basis of the combined solution, colloidal and solid-state characterization of model Al species-BSA systems, a qualitative model of possible interactions in the Al polyoxocation-BSA and Al hydroxide-BSA systems is proposed wherein core-shell hybrid nanoparticles are formed from protein "core" and Al polyoxocation "shell" or Al hydroxide "core" and protein "shell".

Nerve growth factor protects against aluminum-mediated cell death

In the present study, we examined the effect of two salts of aluminum (Al), aluminum maltolate (Almal) and aluminum chloride (AlCl(3)), on the cell viability of PC12 cells in the absence and presence of nerve growth factor (NGF). A 72-h exposure of PC12 cells to Almal (300 microM) resulted in a marked increase of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release from the cells and a decrease of 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) activity. These results indicate that Almal induces a decrease in the cell viability. Under the same conditions, Almal also caused DNA ladder formation and chromatin condensation. In contrast, AlCl(3) did not showed an increased LDH release and a decreased MTT activity in the concentration range of the salt tested (0.1-1 mM). The extent of LDH release and MTT activity decrease induced by Almal treatment closely depended on the amount of Almal incorporated into the cells. An increase in the fluorescence intensity of 6-carboxy-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate, di(acetoxymethyl ester) (C-DCDHF-DA) which was loaded into the cell by Almal treatment and its prevention by pyrrolodine dithiocarbamate, a potent antioxidant, suggested that Almal-induced cell death partly proceeds via reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. NGF effectively inhibited the increase of LDH release and the decrease of MTT activity, as well as DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation. However, NGF did not inhibit the increase of C-DCDHF-DA fluorescence in the cells induced by Almal treatment. From these results, it is suggested that ROS production associated with accumulation of Al is one possible important factor in the onset of Al neurotoxicity via apoptotic cell death and that NGF protects against cell degeneration associated with Al accumulation, but independently of ROS production.

19F NMR study of the equilibria and dynamics of the Al3+/F- system

A careful reinvestigation by high-field 19F NMR (470 MHz) spectroscopy has been made of the Al3+/F- system in aqueous solution under carefully controlled conditions of pH, concentration, ionic strength (I), and temperature. The 19F NMR spectra show five distinct signals at 278 K and I = 0.6 M (TMACl) which have been attributed to the complexes AlFi(3-i)+(aq) with i < or = 5. There was no need to invoke AlFi(OH)j(3-i-j)+ mixed complexes in the model under our experimental conditions (pH < or = 6.5), nor was any evidence obtained for the formation of AlF6(3-)(aq) at very high ratios of F-/Al3+. The stepwise equilibrium constants obtained for the complexes by integration of the 19F signals are in good agreement with literature data given the differences in medium and temperature. In I = 0.6 M TMACl at 278 K and in I = 3 M KCl at 298 K the log Ki values are 6.42, 5.41, 3.99, 2.50, and 0.84 (for species i = 1-5) and 6.35, 5.25, and 4.11 (for species i = 1-3), respectively. Disappearance of the 19F NMR signals under certain conditions was shown to be due to precipitation. Certain 19F NMR signals exhibit temperature- and concentration-dependent exchange broadening. Detailed line shape analysis of the spectra and magnetization transfer measurements indicate that the kinetics are dominated by F- exchange rather than complex formation. The detected reactions and their rate constants are AlF2(2+) + *F- reversible AlF*F2+ + F- (k02 = (1.8 +/- 0.3) x 10(6) M-1 s-1), AlF3(0) + *F- reversible AlF2*F0 + F- (k03 = (3.9 +/- 0.9) x 10(6) M-1 s-1), and AlF3(0) + H*F reversible AlF2*F0 + HF (kH03 = (6.6 +/- 0.5) x 10(4) M-1 s-1). The rates of these exchange reactions increase markedly with increasing F- substitution. Thus, the reactions of AlF2+(aq) were too inert to be detected even on the T1 NMR time scale, while some of the reactions of AlF3(0)(aq) were fast, causing large line broadening. The ligand exchange appears to follow an associative interchange mechanism. The cis-trans isomerization of AlF2+(aq), consistent with octahedral geometry for that complex, is slowed sufficiently to be observed at temperatures around 270 K. Difference between the Al3+/F- system and the much studied Al3+/OH- system are briefly commented on.
