Changes in water and electrolytes in human cervical mucus during treatment with chlormadinone acetate

Ethinylestradiol/chlormadinone acetate 0.03/2mg (EE/CMA) is a combined monophasic contraceptive pill with antiandrogenic properties. In a large, noncomparative, multicentre trial (< or =24 cycles of treatment per woman) and two (6- and 12-cycle) postmarketing surveillance studies, EE/CMA was effective in preventing pregnancy. EE/CMA was significantly more effective than EE/levonorgestrel 0.03/0.15 mg/day in treating women with mild-to-moderate papulopustular acne of the face and related disorders in a randomised, single-blind, multicentre trial. EE/CMA was well tolerated in clinical trials and the postmarketing surveillance studies. Adverse events were those commonly reported with oral contraceptives. As expected, the most common menstrual disturbances were breakthrough bleeding, spotting and amenorrhoea.

Light scattering studies of the effect of Ca2+ on the structure of porcine submaxillary mucin

The effects of calcium ions on the solution properties of porcine submaxillary mucin (PSM) have been investigated by static and dynamic light scattering. The weight average molecular weights of PSM fractions are unaffected by the addition of up to 0.5M CaCl2: these data are within experimental error of those for solutions in 0.1M NaCl. The distribution of relaxation frequencies derived from the dynamic data shows the existence of two distinct relaxation modes. The average relaxation times have been interpreted to yield the z-average translational diffusion coefficient and the longest intramolecular relaxation time tau1. A plot of tau1 vs the mean value of 1/Rh-3z is linear, and consistent with plots of such data recorded for PSM in 0.1m NaCl and 6M GdnHCl solutions. However, the tau values and the associated results for the mean value of R-1h-1z in 0.5M CaCl2 are smaller than those determined in 0.1M NaCl. This suggests that the conformation of PSM in CaCl2 solution is more contracted than those in the other two solvents. These results are consistent with the compact packaging of mucin in the secretary granules that have elevated Ca2+ levels.

Induction of timed ovulation with synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone in women undergoing insemination therapy. I. Effect of a single parenteral administration at midcycle

Synthetic LH-RH was administered by various routes to 19 patients during 37 treatment cycles in an attempt to trigger ovulation in association with insemination therapy. Thirty-five cycles were ovulatory; four pregnancies occurred, but two of them ended in spontaneous abortion. In 20 cycles, the hyperthermia response occurred one to three days after LH-RH administration, suggesting that ovulation occurred as a direct consequence of administered LH-RH. Low levels and delayed peak secretion of progesterone were found in two patients who had serial progesterone determinations during the luteal phase after LH-RH administration. Ovulation timing with LH-RH appears feasible, but efforts to ensure the availability of a mature follicle are required.
