Induced cotton effects for complexes of magnesium porphyrin with D- and L-proline, L-serine, L-threonine and L-tryptophan

Supramolecular bidentate phosphorus ligands based on bis-zinc(ii) and bis-tin(iv) porphyrin building blocks

Selective metal-ligand interactions have been used to prepare supramolecular bidentate ligands by mixing monodentate ligands with a suitable template. For these assemblies pyridine phosphorus ligands and a zinc(II) porphyrin dimer were used. In the rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation of 1-octene and styrene improved selectivities have been obtained for some of the assembled bidentate ligand systems. In the palladium catalysed asymmetric allylic alkylation similar effects were observed; the enantioselectivity increased by using a bisporphyrin template. The preparation of supramolecular catalyst systems was also explored using tin-oxygen interactions. Dihydroxotin(IV) porphyrin and carboxylic phosphorus ligands assemble into supramolecular ligands and the phosphorus donor atom coordinates to transition metals. The stronger oxygen-tin bond, compared to pyridine-zinc does not result in a better performance of the catalyst.

Direct determination of absolute configuration of monoalcohols by bis(magnesium porphyrin)

Ethane bridged bis(Mg porphyrin) has been found to be an effective sensor for the direct determination of the absolute configuration of a variety of monoalcohols at millimolar concentrations and room temperature based on the CD exciton chirality method. Examination of a variety of synthetic and natural monoalcohols, including alpha-substituted aliphatic and aromatic alkanols with one chiral center, as well as alicyclic alcohols with 2-5 chiral centers, gave consistent results. In the case of alcohols with multiple chiral centers, the absolute configuration of the carbon alpha to OH is always read out.

Supramolecular chirogenesis in zinc porphyrins: mechanism, role of guest structure, and application for the absolute configuration determination

The achiral syn folded (face-to-face conformation) host molecule of the ethane-bridged bis(zinc porphyrin) transforms into the corresponding chiral extended anti bis-ligated species in the presence of enantiopure amine guests. The mechanism of the supramolecular chirogenesis is based upon the screw formation in bis(zinc porphyrin), arising from steric interactions between the largest substituent at the ligand's asymmetric carbon and peripheral alkyl groups of the neighboring porphyrin ring pointing toward the covalent bridge. The screw direction is determined by the guest's (amines) absolute configuration resulting in a positive chirality induced by (S)-enantiomers due to formation of the right-handed screw, and a negative chirality produced by the left-handed screw of (R)-enantiomers. The screw magnitude is strongly dependent upon the structure of the chiral guests. The amines with bulkier substituents result in stronger CD signals and larger (1)H NMR resonance splittings of enantiotopic protons. This system possesses a high degree of chiroptical activity, which allows the differentiation of one of the smallest homologous elements of organic chemistry, that is, the methyl and ethyl groups attached to the asymmetric carbon, and additionally, which senses a remote chiral center at a position beta to the amine binding group.

Analytical Application of Oligopyrrole Macrocycles

Progress of modern analytical chemistry is closely related with advancement in other fields such as organic chemistry and biochemistry. Successful solution of current scientific problems is inconceivable without close cooperation of different chemical disciplines. As an example of such hot and very intricate theme research in the field of molecular recognition of biologically active compounds can serve, where numerous methods of analytical chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry can suitably be utilized, elaborated and brought into consonance. This multidisciplinary overlap logically leads to the advent of new scientific fields with their own tools, methodologies and subjects of exploration - bioanalytical chemistry and nanotechnology. This review covers different aspects of analytical application of oligopyrrole macrocycles (mainly porphyrins and sapphyrins). These compounds are widely used in analytical chemistry due to their outstanding optical properties. In our contribution oligopyrrole macrocycles are considered as signaling and structural parts of chemical receptors and selectors in various applications. Introduction of different moieties into meso-position of macrocyclic rings allows to obtain e.g., sterically well-organized receptors for recognition of biologically important analytes, new chromatographic materials, and powerful tools in electrochemical research. Finally, future trends in the field are outlined briefly.

Porphyrins and metalloporphyrins: versatile circular dichroic reporter groups for structural studies

During the last few years, porphyrins and metalloporphyrins have attracted widespread attention as chromophores for studies in circular dichroism (CD), an indispensable chiroptical tool for monitoring chiral interactions. This review summarizes the multifaceted properties of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins, powerful CD chromophores that are characterized by their intense and red-shifted Soret band, propensity to undergo pi-pi stacking, facile incorporation of metals, and ease in varying solubility. Such attributes make porphyrins one of the most attractive and sensitive chromophores used in CD studies. They offer possibilities for studying the stereochemistry of chiral porphyrin assemblies, large organic molecules, biopolymers, and compounds available in miniscule quantities. The tendency of porphyrins to undergo pi-pi stacking and zinc porphyrins to coordinate with amines enable the CD exciton chirality method to be extended to configurational assignments of flexible compounds containing only one stereogenic center. Various artificial porphyrin receptors have been synthesized for the recognition of biologically important chiral guests such as carbohydrates, amino acids, and their derivatives. The induced CD of the host porphyrin Soret band reflects the identity of guests and binding modes of host/guest complexation with high sensitivity.
