Abstract
A digermanium(III) 1,2-dication comprises two cationic centers located at two interconnected Ge atoms. The strong Coulombic repulsion between two positively charged germanium cations hinders their bond formation. Balancing these two oppositions was achieved by using amidinate and cyclic (alkyl)amino carbene (cAAC)-phosphinidenide ligands, where an amidinato cAAC-phosphinidenidogermylene complex, [LGeP(cAACMe)] (2, where L = PhC(NtBu)2, cAACMe = :C{C(Me)2CH2C(Me)2NAr}, and Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3), underwent one-electron oxidation with a bis(phosphinidene) radical cation, [(cAACMe)P]2•+, to form a digermanium(III) 1,2-dication, [LGeP(cAACMe)]22+, in compound 4.

Abstract
Reaction of various sulphur ligands L (SEt-, SPh-, SC6F4H-4-, SEt2, StBu2, SnBu2, DMSO, DPSO) with the precursors [(COD)M(R)Cl] (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene, M=Pd or Pt; R=methyl (Me) or benzyl (Bn); DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide; DPSO=diphenyl sulfoxide) allowed isolation and characterisation of mononuclear neutral (n=0) or cationic (n=1) complexes [(COD)Pt(R)(L)]n+. Reaction of l-cysteine (HCys) with [(COD)Pt(Me)Cl] under similar conditions gave the binuclear cationic complex in [{(COD)Pt(Me)}2(μ-Cys)]Cl. Detailed NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction in the case of [(COD)Pt(Me)(SEt2)][SbF6] and [(COD)Pt(Me)(DMSO)][SbF6] reveal markedly labilised Pt-S bonds as a consequence of the highly covalent Pt-C bonds of the R coligands in these organometallic species. Cationic charge (n=1) seems to lower the Pt-S bond strength further. Consequently, most of these complexes are not stable long-term in aqueous DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) solutions. This made the evaluation of their antiproliferative properties towards HT-29 colon carcinoma and MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma cell lines impossible. Only the two complexes [(COD)Pt(R)(SC6F4H-4)] with R=Me or SC6F4H-4 coligands could be tested with the R=Me complex showing promising activity (in the range of cisplatin), while the R=SC6F4H-4 derivative is largely inactive, as were the phosphane complexes [(dppe)Pt(SC6F4H-4)2] (dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), cis-[(PPh3)2Pt(SC6F4H-4)2] and cis-[(PPh3)2PtCl2] which were tested for comparison. In turn, our findings might pave the way to new Pt anti-cancer drugs with largely reduced unwanted depletion of incorporated drugs and reduced side-effects from binding to S-containing biomolecules.

Abstract
The title cluster, [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](2+) (dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane), reacts with one equivalent of hydroxide anions (OH(-)), from tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (Bu(4)NOH), to give the paramagnetic [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](+) species. Reaction with another equivalent of OH(-) leads to the zero-valent compound [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](0). From electron paramagnetic resonance analysis of the reaction medium using the spin-trap agent 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), the 2-tetrahydrofuryl or methyl radicals, deriving from the tetrahydrofuran (THF) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent, respectively, were detected. For both [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](2+) and [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)](+), the mechanism involves, in a first equilibrated step, the formation of a hydroxide adduct, [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)(OH)]((n-1)+) (n=1, 2), which reacts irreversibly with the solvent. The kinetics were resolved by means of stopped-flow experiments and are consistent with the proposed mechanism. In the presence of an excess of Bu(4)NOH, an electrocatalytic process was observed with modest turnover numbers (7-8). The hydroxide adducts [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)(OH)]((n-1)+) (n=1, 2), which bear important similarities to the well-known corresponding halide adducts [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)(mu(3)-X)](n) (X=Cl, Br, I), have been studied by using density functional theory (DFT). Although the optimised geometry for the cluster in its +2 and 0 oxidation states (i.e., cation and anion clusters, respectively) is the anticipated mu(3)-OH form, the paramagnetic species, [Pd(3)(mu(3)-CO)(dppm)(3)(OH)](0), shows a mu(2)-OH form; this suggests an important difference in electronic structure between these three species.

Abstract
The species obtained by the reaction of [Pd2([18]aneN6)Cl2](ClO4)2(where [18]aneN6 is 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane) with AgBF4 have been determined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) to be an equilibrium mixture of three major types of dinuclear Pd(II) complex cations, [Pd2(mu-O)([18]aneN6)]2+, [Pd2(mu-OH)([18]aneN6)]3+ and [Pd2(H2O)(OH)([18]aneN6)](3+), in aqueous solution. The hydroxo-group-bridged one, [Pd2(mu-OH)([18]aneN6)]3+, is a dominant species, whose crystal structure has been obtained. The crystal structure of [Pd2(mu-OH)([18]aneN6)](ClO4)3 shows that each Pd(II) ion in the dinuclear complex is tetra-coordinated by three nitrogen atoms and one hydroxo group bridge in a distorted square configuration. The two Pd(II) ions are 3.09 A apart from each other. The dinuclear Pd(II) complex cations [Pd2(mu-OH)([18]aneN6)]3+ and [Pd2(H2O)(OH)([18]aneN6)]3+ can efficiently catalyze hydrolysis of the amide bond involving the carbonyl group of methionine in methionine-containing peptides with turnover number of larger than 20. In these hydrolytic reactions, the two Pd(II) ions are synergic; one Pd(II) ion anchors to the side chain of methionine and the other one delivers hydroxo group or aqua ligand to carbonyl carbon of methionine, or acts as a Lewis acid to activate the carbonyl group of methionine, resulting in cleavage of Met-X bond. The binding constant of dinuclear Pd(II) complex cations with AcMet-Gly and AcMet were determined by 1H NMR titration to be 282 +/- 2 M(-1) and 366 +/- 4 M(-1), respectively. The relatively low binding constants enable the catalytic cycle and the possible catalytic mechanism is proposed. This is the first artificial mimic of metallopeptidases with two metal active centers.
