Abstract
Lanthanide-ligand complexes are key components of technological applications, and their properties depend on their structures in the solution phase, which are challenging to resolve experimentally or computationally. The coordination structure of the Eu3+ ion in different coordination environments in acetonitrile is examined using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. AIMD simulations are conducted for the solvated Eu3+ ion in acetonitrile, both with or without a terpyridyl ligand, and in the presence of either triflate or nitrate counterions. EXAFS spectra are calculated directly from AIMD simulations and then compared to experimentally measured EXAFS spectra. In acetonitrile solution, both nitrate and triflate anions are shown to coordinate directly to the Eu3+ ion forming either ten- or eight-coordinate solvent complexes where the counterions are binding as bidentate or monodentate structures, respectively. Coordination of a terpyridyl ligand to the Eu3+ ion limits the available binding sites for the solvent and anions. In certain cases, the terpyridyl ligand excludes any solvent binding and limits the number of coordinated anions. The solution structure of the Eu-terpyridyl complex with nitrate counterions is shown to have a similar arrangement of Eu3+ coordinating molecules as the crystal structure. This study illustrates how a combination of AIMD and EXAFS can be used to determine how ligands, solvent, and counterions coordinate with the lanthanide ions in solution.

Abstract
Our present technological society needs the assistance of lanthanide luminescence in almost every field to meet the global energy demands. In present research work we have synthesized five (one binary and four ternary) 5-(4-methylphenyl)-2- furoic acid based Eu(III) complexes with ancillary ligands, namely, aqua (H2O), neocuproine (neo), 2, 2'-bipyridyl (bipy), bathophenanthroline (batho) and 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen). The spectroscopic analysis and photophysical features are characterized by the use of different investigative techniques. All the findings obtained from EDAX, elemental (CHN) analysis, FT-IR, NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy declared the coordination of ligand binding sites with the europium ion. These Eu(III) complexes possess good thermal stability and excellent optoelectronic features as predicted with the help of TGA and PL analysis. Diffuse reflectance spectral studies confirm their applications in the wide band gap semiconductors. The Judd-Ofelt analysis and monoexponential behavior of lifetime reveals the existence of asymmetric and single local environment around europium ion. All the complexes show sharp red emission validated by CIE color coordinates, color purity, asymmetric ratio and CCT values. SEM analysis tells that the bulk of these complexes comprised of spherical shaped particles with uniform distribution.

Abstract
We report a detailed characterization of Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes derived from a tripyridinophane macrocycle bearing three acetate side arms (H3tpptac). Tpptac3- displays an overall basicity (∑ log KiH) of 24.5, provides the formation of mononuclear ML species, and shows a good binding affinity for Ln3+ (log KLnL = 17.5-18.7). These complexes are also thermodynamically stable at physiological pH (pEu = 18.6, pTb = 18.0). It should be noted that the pGd value of Gd-tpptac (18.4) is only slightly lower than that of commercially available MRI contrast agents such as Gd-dota (pGd = 19.2). Moreover, a very good selectivity for these ions over the endogenous cations (log KCuL = 14.4, log KZnL = 12.9, and log KCaL = 9.3) is observed. The X-ray structure of the terbium complex shows the metal coordinated by the nine N6O3 donor set of the ligand and one inner-sphere water molecule. DFT calculations result in two Eu-tpptac structures with similar bond energies (ΔE = 0.145 eV): one structure in which the water is coordinated to the metal ion and one structure in which the water molecule is farther away from the ion, bound to the ligand with an OH-π bond. By detailed luminescence experiments, we demonstrate that the europium complex in aqueous solution presents a hydration equilibrium between nine-coordinate, dehydrated [Eu-tpptac]0 and ten-coordinate, monohydrated [Eu-tpptac(H2O)]0 species. A similar trend is observed for the terbium complex. Despite the presence of this hydration equilibrium, the H3tpptac ligand sensitizes Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescence efficiently in buffered water at physiological pH. Particularly, the terbium complex displays a long excited-state lifetime of 2.24 ms and an overall quantum yield of 33% with a brightness of 3600 M-1 cm-1. Such features of Ln3+ complexes of H3tpptac indicate that this platform appears to be particularly appealing for the further development of luminescent lanthanide labels.

Abstract
A new spectroscopic system for direct photoluminescence of lanthanide ions (Ln(III)) through electronic transitions within the 4f(n) manifold is described. The system is based on an injection seeded frequency tripled (lambda = 355 nm) Nd:YAG pump laser coupled with a master oscillator power oscillator (MOPO). The MOPO delivers an average pulse energy of approximately 60 mJ/pulse, is continuously tunable from 425 to 690 nm (Signal) and 735 to 1800 nm (Idler) with a linewidth of <0.2 cm(-1), and has a pulse duration of 10-12 ns. Aqueous solutions containing two polyaminocarboxylate complexes, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and Ln(3+) aqua ion for several lanthanides including Eu(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), and Sm(III)) are used as steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence standards. The versatility of the instrument is demonstrated by excitation scans over a broad visible range for aqueous solutions of complexes of Eu(III), Dy(III), Sm(III), and Tb(III). The Eu(III) excitation band ((7)F(o)-->(5)D(o)) is recorded over a range of complex concentrations that are 1000-fold less than reported previously, including Eu(EDTA) (1.00 nM), Eu(DTPA) (1.00 nM), and Eu(III) aqua ion (50.0 nM). Emission spectra are recorded in the visible range for Ln(III) complexes at pH 6.5 and 1.00 mM. Excited-state lifetimes for the standards were constant as a function of concentration from 10.0 nM to 1.00 mM for Eu(EDTA) and Eu(DTPA) and from 100 nM to 1.00 mM for Eu(III) aqua ion. Photoluminescence lifetimes in H(2)O and D(2)O are recorded and used to calculate the number of bound water molecules for all complexes.
