Abstract
The tris(mercaptoimidazolyl)hydroborato complexes, [κ(3)-S2H-Tm(Bu(t))]Na(THF)3 and [κ(3)-S2H-Tm(Ad)]Na(THF)3, which feature t-butyl and adamantyl substituents, have been synthesized via the reactions of the respective 1-R-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazole-2-thiones with NaBH4 in THF (R = Bu(t), 1-Ad). X-ray diffraction studies indicate that the compounds are monomeric and that the [Tm(R)] ligands coordinate to the metal in a κ(3)-S2H manner via two of the sulfur donors and the hydrogen attached to boron, a combination that is unprecedented for sodium derivatives. Analysis of the tris(mercaptoimidazolyl)hydroborato compounds that are listed in the Cambridge Structural Database has allowed for the formulation of a set of criteria that enables κ(x)-S(x) and κ(x+1)-S(x)H coordination modes to be identified. Furthermore, the various κ(x)-S(x) and κ(x+1)-S(x)H coordination modes have also been analyzed with respect to the conformations of the [Tm(R)] ligands, which differ by rotation of the imidazolethione moieties about the B-N bond.

Abstract
An improved synthesis of lithium phenyltris(methimazolyl)borate, Li[PhTm(Me)], (methimazole = 1-methylimidazole-2-thione) is described, and the structure of the methanol-solvated [Li(OHMe)4][PhTm(Me)] has been determined. The syntheses and characterization of complexes [M(PhTm(Me))(PR3)] (M = Cu, Ag, Au; R = Et, Ph;) are reported, and the complexes [Cu(PhTm(Me))(PPh3)], [Ag(PhTm(Me))(PEt3)] and [Au(PhTm(Me))(PEt3)] are crystallographically characterized, showing a progression from pseudo-tetrahedral geometry (copper, S3P coordination) to trigonal planar geometry (silver, S2P coordination) to linear geometry (gold, SP coordination). In addition, the copper(I) and silver(I) triphenylphosphine complexes of the adventitiously formed phenylhydrobis(methimazolyl)borate ligand, [M(PhBm(Me))(PPh3)], have been crystallographically characterized, showing both species to have a trigonal planar primary coordination sphere, with a secondary M...H-B interaction. Finally, reaction of copper(II) chloride with Li[PhTm(Me)] results in formation of a compound analyzing as [Cu(II)(PhTm(Me))Cl], although its extreme insolubility and marked instability have precluded its complete characterization. Attempts to prepare this by ultra-slow diffusion of the reactants through solvent blanks has led to isolation of a mixed-valence copper(I/II) methimazolate cluster, [Cu(I)10Cu(II)2(mt)12Cl2] and a copper(I) dimeric complex [Cu2(PhTm(Me))2], indicating that copper(II) ions oxidatively decompose the phenyltris(methimazolyl)borate anion.

Abstract
The tripodal ligands hydrotris(N-ethyl-2-mercaptoimidazol-1-yl)borate (NaTm(Et)) (1) and hydrotris(N-benzyl-2-mercaptoimidazol-1-yl)borate (NaTm(Bn)) (2), analogues of the hydrotris(N-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazol-1-yl)borate ligand (Tm) containing alternative nitrogen substituents, have been employed to examine the racemization of their C3-symmetric complexes with both four- and six-coordinate metals. The ligands react at room temperature with metal halides to provide C3-symmetric metal complexes. The syntheses of the four-coordinate complexes [Tm(Et)ZnCl] (3), [Tm(Et)CdBr] (4), [Tm(Et)HgCl] (5), [Tm(Et)CuPPh3] (6), [Tm(Et)AgPPh3] (7), and [Tm(Bn)ZnCl] (8) are reported. The six-coordinate complexes [Tm(Et)Ru(p-cymene)]Cl (9), [Tm(Et)Ru(p-cymene)]PF(6) (10), and [Tm(Et)Mn(CO)3] (11) were also synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of 3, 4, 6, and 9 are reported. The diastereotopic nature of the ethyl and benzyl hydrogen atoms in the ligands allows the enantiomeric forms of these complexes to be distinguished by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Variable-temperature (VT) 1H NMR spectra have thus been used to investigate the energies of the racemization processes occurring in these chiral complexes. In solvents the activation energies to racemization for the four-coordinate complexes lay in the range of 53-77 kJ mol(-1). In non-donor solvents the energies are reduced and a dissociative mechanism is therefore implicated. No interconversion could be observed by VT NMR for the six-coordinate complexes in any solvent. To further explore the racemization mechanisms ab initio density functional theory calculations have been conducted on the ground- and transition-state structures of representative six-coordinate [Mn(I)] and four-coordinate [Zn(II)] complexes following a proposed nondissociative mechanism of racemization. The calculated energy barriers to racemization are 163 and 121 kJ mol(-1), respectively. It is concluded that the low-energy racemization of substitution-labile four-coordinate complexes occurs via a dissociative mechanism, while substitution-inert six-coordinate complexes experience a significantly higher barrier to racemization. Whether this is due to the operation of a dissociative mechanism with a higher activation barrier or to a nondissociative mechanism remains unknown.

Abstract
The first tris(mercaptoimidazolyl)borate complexes of gold, Au(Tm(tBu)) and (Tm(tBu))Au(PPh3), have been prepared and structurally characterized. Together with their copper and silver analogues M(Tm(tBu)) and (Tm(tBu))M(PPh3)(M = Cu, Ag), these compounds constitute the first two complete series of Tm(R) derivatives to be isolated for the coinage metals. In order to evaluate the steric and electronic effects of the bulky tert-butyl substituents in these species, comparative structural analyses with the known methyl-substituted analogue Ag(Tm(Me)) and various (Tm(Me))M(PR3) derivatives (M = Cu, Ag) are also presented.

Abstract
Whilst frequently used for reactions of poly(methimazolyl)borates, dichloromethane is not an innocent solvent, but rather slowly forms heterocyclic salts [H(2)C(mt)(2)BR(2)]Cl, three examples of which (BR(2) = BH(2), BH(mt), 9-borabicyclononyl) have been structurally characterised to confirm the unprecedented B(NCS)(2)C connectivity.

Abstract
The complex [Re[kappa(3)-H(mu-H)B(tim(Me))(2)](CO)(3)] (2a) (tim(Me) = 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl) reacts with a variety of neutral substrates to afford new complexes featuring the dihydrobis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate coordinated in a bidentate or unidentate fashion. By treating 2a with unidentate ligands, the mononuclear complexes [Re[kappa(2)-H(2)B(tim(Me))(2)](CO)(3)(L)] (L = imidazole (5), 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (6), tert-butylisonitrile (7), triphenylphosphine (8)) were formed, upon replacement of the agostic B-H...Re bond by the correspondent unidentate ligand. With potentially bidentate substrates, 2a is transformed into mononuclear or dinuclear complexes, depending on the atom donor set of the reacting substrates. Reaction of compound 2a with ethylenediamine (en) gave the complex [Re[kappa(1)-H(2)B(tim(Me))(2)](CO)(3)(en)] (9), because of cleavage of the agostic interaction, dechelation of one mercaptoimidazolyl ring, and bidentate coordination of the amine. By contrast, 1,2-bis(diphenyl)phosphinoethane (dppe) is not able to replace the mercaptoimidazolyl ring, and the dimer [Re[kappa(2)-H(2)B(tim(Me))(2)](CO)(3)](2)(mu-dppe) (10) was formed. The novel Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes (5-10) have been fully characterized, including by X-ray diffraction analysis in the case of 6, 8, 9, and 10. The X-ray diffraction study confirmed the unprecedented unidentate coordination mode of the dihydrobis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate in complex 9.
