Abstract
The binding of group 12 metal ions to bis(2-methylpyridyl) sulfide (1) was investigated by X-ray crystallography and NMR. Seven structures of the chloride and perchlorate salts of Hg(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) with 1 are reported. Hg(1)(2)(ClO(4))(2), Cd(1)(2)(ClO(4))(2), and Zn(1)(2)(ClO(4))(2).CH(3)CN form mononuclear, six-coordinate species in the solid state with 1 binding in a tridentate coordination mode. Hg(1)(2)(ClO(4))(2) has a distorted trigonal prismatic coordination geometry while Cd(1)(2)(ClO(4))(2) and Zn(1)(2)(ClO(4))(2).CH(3)CN have distorted octahedral geometries. With chloride anions, the 1:1 metal to ligand complexes Hg(1)Cl(2), [Cd(1)Cl(2)](2), and Zn(1)Cl(2) are formed. A bidentate binding mode that lacks thioether coordination is observed for 1 in the four-coordinate, distorted tetrahedral complexes Zn(1)Cl(2) and Hg(1)Cl(2). [Cd(1)Cl(2)](2) is dimeric with a distorted octahedral coordination geometry and a tridentate 1. Hg(1)Cl(2) is comprised of pairs of loosely associated monomers and Zn(1)Cl(2) is monomeric. In addition, Hg(2)(1)Cl(4) is formed with alternating chloride and thioether bridges. The distorted square pyramidal Hg(II) centers result in a supramolecular zigzagging chain in the solid state. The solution (1)H NMR spectra of [Hg(1)(2)](2+) and [Hg(1)(NCCH(3))(x)()](2+) reveal (3)(-)(5)J((199)Hg(1)H) due to slow ligand exchange found in these thioether complexes. Implications for use of Hg(II) as a metallobioprobe are discussed.

Abstract
Tetra-peri-(tert-butyl-benzo)-di-peri-(pyrimidino)-coronene 1, the parent compound of the nitrogen heterosuperbenzene family N-HSB, is employed as a novel monotopic ligand in the formation of [Pd(eta3-C3H5)(1)]PF6 2 and [Ru(bpy)2(1)](PF6)2 (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine 3a and d8-2,2'-bipyridine 3b). These N-coordinated complexes are fully characterized by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy and ESI-MS. Metal coordination has a profound effect on both the absorption and the emission properties of 1. Pd(II) coordination causes a red-shift in the low-energy absorptions, a decrease in the intensity of the n-pi absorptions, and a quenching of the emission. Ru(II) coordination causes absorption throughout the visible region and creates two new complexes that join an elite group of compounds known as "black" absorbers. 3a and 3b possess two discernible 1MLCT bands. The one of exceptionally low energy (lambda(max) = 615 nm) has an associated (3)MLCT emission (lambda(max) = 880 nm) due to the unprecedented electron delocalization and acceptor properties of the rigid aromatic N-HSB 1. Both Ru(II) complexes are near-IR emitters with unusually protracted emission lifetimes of 320 ns at 77 K. They are photochemically inert, and their electrochemical properties are consistent with the presence of a low-lying pi orbital on 1. The first two reversible reductions (E(1/2) (CH3CN), -0.54 V, -1.01 V vs SCE) are due to the stepwise reduction of 1 and are anodically shifted as compared to [Ru(bpy)3]2+. Temperature- and concentration-dependent NMR studies on 2 and 3a suggest extensive aggregation is occurring in solution.

Abstract
The polydentate N-donor ligand 2,4,6-tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (Me(2)-TpzT) has been used to synthesize the new palladium derivatives Pd(R)(2)(Me(2)-TpzT), R = C(6)F(5), 1; R = m-C(6)ClF(4), 2. In the case of complex 2, four different atropisomers have been detected at low temperature. The new complexes exhibit a rich dynamic behavior, including three metallotropic processes (metal-hurdling, 1,4-metallotropic shifts, and an intermolecular process) and two processes involving restricted rotation of aromatic rings (the polyfluorophenyl groups and the uncoordinated pyrazole group adjacent to the metal fragment). The fluxional behavior has been studied by (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopy using variable temperature NMR studies and (1)H,(1)H and (19)F,(19)F EXSY experiments. The study of solutions of 2 in 1,1',2,2'-tetrachloroethane-d(2) gave the following order for the free energy of activation: pyrazole rotation < 1,4-metallotropic shift < intermolecular exchange < polyfluorophenyl rotation. The process of metal hurdling was not found in this solvent. However, in acetone-d(6) such a process was detected and was found to be of lower energy than the 1,4-metallotropic shift. In dilute acetone-d(6) or 1,1',2,2'-tetrachloroethane-d(2 )()solutions, the intermolecular process was not observed. Conclusions concerning the different mechanisms have been deduced from the data obtained.

Abstract
The reaction of the C=N bond in PhCH=NPh with the carbanionic species Ph2PCH2-, leading to the N-phenyl beta-aminophosphine Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)NHPh, L1, is described. This molecule reacts with different organic electrophiles to afford related compounds Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)NPhX (X = SiMe3, L2; COPh, L4), [Ph2MePCH2CH(Ph)NHPh]+(I-), L3, and [Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)N(Ph)CO]2, L5, containing two amido and two phosphino functions. The coordination properties of L1, L2, and L4 have been studied in palladium chemistry. The X-ray structure of [PdCl2(Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)NHPh-kappaP,kappaN)] shows the bidentate coordination mode for the L1 ligand with equatorial C(Ph)-N(Ph) phenyl groups. [PdCl2(Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)NHPh-kappaP,kappaN)] crystallizes at 298 K in the space group P2(1)/n with cell parameters a = 10.689(2) A, b = 21.345(3) A, c = 12.282(2) A, beta = 90.294(12) degrees, Z = 4, D(calcd) = 1.526. The reaction between 2 equiv of L1 and [PdCl(eta3-C3H5)]2 affords the [PdCl(eta3-C3H5)(Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)NHPh-kappaP)] complex in which an unexpected N-H.Cl intramolecular interaction has been observed by an X-ray diffraction analysis. [PdCl(eta3-C3H5)(Ph2PCH2CH(Ph)NHPh-kappaP)] crystallizes at 298 K in the monoclinic space group Cc with cell parameters a = 10.912(1) A, b = 17.194(2) A, c = 14.169(2) A, beta = 100.651(9) degrees, Z = 4, D(calcd) = 1.435. Neutral and cationic alkyl or allyl palladium chloride complexes containing L1 are also reported as well as a neutral allyl palladium chloride complex containing L4. Variable-temperature 31P[1H] NMR studies on the allyl complexes show that the eta3/eta1 allyl interconversion is enhanced by a positive charge and also by a N-H.Cl intramolecular interaction.
