Molecular recognition with cyclodextrin polymer: a novel method for removing sulfides efficiently

A series of cyclodextrin polymers (CDPs) were synthesized and they were used for removing different sulfides by molecular recognition. It's showed that β-CDP has a more suitable cavity size for removing DBT.

Preparative gas chromatography and its applications

Although hundreds of papers related to preparative gas chromatography (pGC) have been published since the late 1950s, the success of the GC technique has largely been associated with analytical instead of preparative purposes. Actually, pGC is an ideal alternative technique for the preparation of pure substances, especially volatile compounds. This paper reviews the papers (written in English) associated with pGC published over the period from the 1950s to the 2010s. For large scale preparation, large sample injection and vaporization, a high loading capacity column, a gas splitter at the end of the column and a special collecting device are fundamentally important for a pGC system. The primary components of pGC system, including injector, column, splitter, detector and collection traps, are briefly introduced. Furthermore, the applications of pGC in the separation and purification of volatile compounds from natural essential oils, in addition to the purification of isotopes, isomers and enantiomers are summarized.

Gas-chromatographic enantioseparation of unfunctionalized chiral hydrocarbons: an overview

Analytical gas-chromatographic enantioseparations of unfunctionalized chiral hydrocarbons (cycloalkanes and alkanes) on modified cyclodextrins with high-resolution capillary columns are reviewed. Due to the lack of functional groups of the hydrocarbons, enantiorecognition in the presence of cyclodextrins is ascribed to weak van der Waals forces. Thermodynamic parameters of enantiorecognition between four chiral alkanes and octakis(6-O-methyl-2,3-di-O-pentyl)-γ-cyclodextrin (Lipodex G) have been determined. The possible role of molecular inclusion is indicated by the complete loss of enantioselectivity when the cyclodextrins are replaced by the corresponding linear dextrins. The substitution pattern and cavity size of the modified cyclodextrins have a pronounced effect on the degree of enantiorecognition observed. On mixed binary cyclodextrin stationary phases, all C7 and C8 chiral alkanes possessing one stereogenic center can be enantioseparated simultaneously. The methodology has been used to determine enantiomeric excesses, ee, of alkanes formed by the enantioselective catalytic hydrogenation of prochiral alkenes. The novel online coupling of enantioselective gas chromatography with proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is demonstrated for 2,4-dimethylhexane and Lipodex G.

The determination of the absolute configurations of chiral molecules using vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy

The vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of the two enantiomers of a chiral molecule are of equal magnitude and opposite sign: i.e. mirror-image enantiomers give mirror-image VCD spectra. In principle, the absolute configuration (AC) of a chiral molecule can therefore be determined from its VCD spectrum. In practice, the determination of the AC of a chiral molecule from its experimental VCD spectrum requires a methodology which reliably predicts the VCD spectra of its enantiomers. The only reliable methodology developed to date uses the Stephens quantum-mechanical theory of the rotational strengths of fundamental vibrational transitions, developed in the early 1980s, implemented using ab initio density functional theory in the GAUSSIAN program in the mid 1990s. This methodology has by now been widely used in determining ACs from experimental VCD spectra. In this article we discuss the protocol for determining the ACs of chiral molecules with optimum reliability and its implementation for a variety of molecules, including the D3 symmetry perhydrotriphenylene, a thiazino-oxadiazolone recently shown to be a highly active calcium entry channel blocker, the alkaloid natural products schizozygine, iso-schizogaline, and iso-schizogamine, and the iridoid natural products plumericin, iso-plumericin, and prismatomerin. The power of VCD spectroscopy in determining ACs, even for large organic molecules and for substantially conformationally-flexible organic molecules is clearly documented.

Determination of absolute configuration using density functional theory calculation of optical rotation: chiral alkanes

The recently developed Gauge-Invariant (Including) Atomic Orbital (GIAO) based Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) methodology for the calculation of transparent spectral region optical rotations of chiral molecules provides a new approach to the determination of absolute configurations. Here, we discuss the application of the TDDFT/GIAO methodology to chiral alkanes. We report B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ calculations of the specific rotations of the 22 chiral alkanes, 2-23, of well-established Absolute Configuration. The average absolute deviation of calculated and experimental [alpha](D) values for molecules 2-22 is 24.8. In two of the molecules 2-23, trans-pinane, 10, and endo-isocamphane, 13, the sign of [alpha](D) is incorrectly predicted. Our results demonstrate that absolute configurations of alkanes can be reliably assigned by using B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ TDDFT/GIAO calculations if, but only if, [alpha](D) is significantly greater than 25. In the case of (-)-anti-trans-anti-trans-anti-trans-perhydrotriphenylene, 1, [alpha](D) is -93 and TDDFT/GIAO calculations reliably lead to the absolute configuration R(-).

Peralkylated-β-cyclodextrin used as gas chromatographic stationary phase prepared by sol–gel technology for capillary column

For the first time, three peralkylated-beta-cyclodextrins (beta-CD), permethylated-beta-CD, perethylated-beta-CD and perpentylated-beta-CD, were coated onto the fused-silica capillary by sol-gel method with simplicity and rapidity. Multiple steps in conventional column preparation technology were avoided. Also, these new columns demonstrated many inherent advantages, the main being the outstanding thermal stability (up to 300 degrees C), high number of theoretical plates, excellent column-to-column and run-to-run reproducibility, and pronounced selectivity for positional isomers and enantiomers. Using n-tridecane as a test reagent (k = 4.18), an efficiency value of 3520 theoretical plates/m was obtained on a sol-gel perpentylated-beta-CD capillary column (15 m x 0.25 mm I.D.). On the basis of the results, we proposed that the peralkylated-beta-CD, which has no terminal hydroxyl group, is encapsulated in the sol-gel network and the whole matrix is chemically bonded to the surface of the fused-silica tubing.
