Recent progress in polar stationary phases for CEC

This review summarizes most of the recent developments in the preparation and application of polar stationary phases for CEC covering the literature published since the year 2004. These polar stationary phases have been adopted for separation of analytes by the modes of packing column CEC, open-tubular CEC (o-CEC) and monolithic column CEC. Currently, development of o-CEC using biomolecules, such as protein and DNA, as the immobilized ligands is highlighted partly due to the simplicity of preparation. Furthermore, monolithic columns have been extended quickly, particularly inorganic materials-based monoliths, such as silica, zirconia, hafnium, etc., as an alternative to packed columns have been developed quickly.

Model for continuous-wave laser-induced thermal lens spectrometry of optically transparent surface-absorbing solids

A theoretical model for cw laser-induced thermal lens spectrometry of optically transparent surface-absorbing solids is developed. In the model, the sample is represented as a set of discrete layers with certain thicknesses and light absorptivities. The bloomed thermo-optical element in the sample is described with a summation of heat-flux functions for all the layers. The model employs simple mathematical expressions and can be used for both steady-state and time-resolved thermal lens experiments. Good coincidence of the experimental and theoretically predicted signal dependences is achieved. This model is verified for volume-absorbing samples (colored optical glasses) and used successfully to calculate absorbances and concentrations for various surface-absorbing samples.

Developments in the use of soluble ionic polymers as pseudo-stationary phases for electrokinetic chromatography and stationary phases for electrochromatography

This article reviews the development, characterization and application of soluble ionic polymeric materials as pseudo-stationary phases for electrokinetic chromatography and as stationary phases for electrochromatography since 1997. Polymeric pseudo-stationary phases for electrokinetic chromatography, including cationic polymers, anionic siloxane and acrylamide polymers, polymerized surfactants (micelle polymers), and chiral polymers are reviewed. Also reviewed are suspended molecularly imprinted polymer micro-particles. Application of polymeric pseudo-stationary phases with electrospray ionization mass spectrometric detection is presented. Recent progress in the development and characterization of physically adsorbed stationary phases for electrochromatography using polymers of the same or similar chemistry is also reviewed.

Preparation of a sulfonated fused-silica capillary and its application in capillary electrophoresis and electrochromatography

In the present paper, two new methods, sol-gel and chemical bonding methods, were proposed for preparation of sulfonated fused-silica capillaries. In the sol-gel method, a fused-silica capillary was coated with the sol solution obtained by hydrolysis of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) and tetramethoxysilane, and followed by age; while in the chemical bonding method, a capillary was chemically bonded directly with MPTS. Then, both the resulting capillaries were oxidized with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide solution (H2O2) (30%, m/m) to obtain the sulfonated capillaries. The electroosmotic flow (EOF) for the sulfonated capillaries was found to remain almost constant within the studied pH range, and greater than that of the uncoated capillary. However, the coating efficiency of the capillary prepared by chemical bonding method was higher than that by sol-gel method, by comparing their magnitude of the EOF, the degree of disguise of the silanol and reproducibility of preparation procedure. The effects of the electrolyte's concentration and the content of methanol (MeOH) on the EOF were also studied. Especially, the study of the apparent pH (pH*) on the EOF in a water-MeOH system was reported. Finally, capillary electrophoretic separation of seven organic acids was achieved within 6.5 min under optimal condition using the chemically bonded sulfonated capillary. Moreover, separation of four alkaloids on the sulfonated capillary was compared with that on uncoated capillary in different conditions. Ion-exchange mechanism was found to play a key role for separation of these four basic analytes on the sulfonated capillary.

Application of water-soluble polymers as modifiers in electrophoretic analysis of phenols

A review of application of water-soluble cationic, anionic and nonionic polymers as pseudostationary phases in capillary electrophoresis (CE) and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) is presented. The effect of the structure of the polymers on the selectivity and efficiency of separation is discussed. A novel specially designed cationic polymer, 2,10-ionene, has been used for the separation of phenols. The polymer has hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts in its backbone. The polymer shows the best selectivity as a modifier in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)-mode, which allows the selective determination of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic phenols.
