Simultaneous Determination of Phenol and Mononitrophenol Isomers Using PLS Regression and Conventional and Derivative Spectrophotometry

The partial least squares regression method (PLS) was tested as a calibration procedure for the simultaneous determination of phenol, o-nitrophenol, m-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol by both conventional and first derivative UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The experiments were conducted in the acidic, neutral and basic media. The results obtained by the application of the PLS procedure on the conventional and first derivative spectra in two solvent media were compared. It was found that the results obtained in the basic medium have better performance characteristics than those obtained in the acidic or neutral media. Comparable results were obtained in the case of both conventional and first derivative absorbance data. The proposed method was applied to the determination of the four phenol derivatives in natural spiked water samples at concentration levels between 1.0 and 10.0 microg ml(-1) with average recoveries in the range 96% - 99%.

HPLC-fluorescence determination of chlorocresol and chloroxylenol in pharmaceuticals

The use of 2-chloro-6,7-dimethoxy-3-quinolinecarboxaldehyde as a fluorogenic labelling reagent in pre-column derivatization for the HPLC separation of chlorophenols has been investigated. The compound reacts (50 min at 110 degrees C) with 2- and 4-chlorophenols to give fluorescent ethers that can be separated by reversed-phase HPLC and detected at lambda exc = 360 nm, lambda em = 500 nm. The experimental conditions for derivatization and chromatographic separation are discussed. Applications for the determination of chlorocresol (4-chloro-3-cresol) and chloroxylenol (4-chloro-3,5-xylenol) in pharmaceutical formulations (creams, ointments) are described.

Migration and sorption phenomena in packaged foods

Rapidly developing analytical capabilities and continuously evolving stringent regulations have made food/package interactions a subject of intense research. This article focuses on: (1) the migration of package components such as oligomers and monomers, processing aids, additives, and residual reactants in to packaged foods, and (2) sorption of food components such as flavors, lipids, and moisture into packages. Principles of diffusion and thermodynamics are utilized to describe the mathematics of migration and sorption. Mathematical models are developed from first principles, and their applicability is illustrated using numerical simulations and published data. Simulations indicate that available models are system (polymer-penetrant) specific. Furthermore, some models best describe the early stages of migration/sorption, whereas others should be used for the late stages of these phenomena. Migration- and/or sorption-related problems with respect to glass, metal, paper-based and polymeric packaging materials are discussed, and their importance is illustrated using published examples. The effects of migrating and absorbed components on food safety, quality, and the environment are presented for various foods and packaging materials. The impact of currently popular packaging techniques such as microwavable, ovenable, and retortable packaging on migration and sorption are discussed with examples. Analytical techniques for investigating migration and sorption phenomena in food packaging are critically reviewed, with special emphasis on the use and characteristics of food-simulating liquids (FSLs). Finally, domestic and international regulations concerning migration in packaged foods, and their impact on food packaging is briefly presented.
