Preparation and properties studies of UV-curable silicone modified epoxy resin composite system

INTRODUCTION

Modified epoxy suitable for ultraviolet (UV) curing is prepared by using organic silicon toughening. The curing kinetics of the composite are studied by dielectric analysis (DEA), and the two-phase compatibility of the composite is studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

METHODS

The tensile properties, heat resistance, and humidity resistance of the cured product are explored by changing the composition ratio of the silicone and the epoxy resin.

RESULTS

SEM of silicone/epoxy resin shows that the degree of cross-linking of the composites decreases with an increase of silicone resin content. Differential thermal analysis indicates that the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability of the composites decrease gradually with an increase of silicone resin content. The thermal degradation rate in the high temperature region, however, first decreases and then increases. In general, after adding just 10%-15% of the silicone resin and exposing to light for 15 min, the composite can still achieve a better curing effect.

CONCLUSIONS

Under such conditions, the heat resistance of the cured product decreases a little. The tensile strength is kept constant so that elongation at breakage is apparently improved. The change rate after immersion in distilled water at 60°C for seven days is small, which shows excellent humidity resistance.

Self-assembled epoxy-modified polymer coating on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) microchip for EOF inhibition and biopolymers separation

A straightforward approach to generate a stable and protein-resistant poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surface using self-assembled hydrophilic polymers is demonstrated in this work. Epoxy-modified polymers were directly adsorbed from aqueous solution onto plasma oxidized PDMS based on H-bond interaction, and epoxies of polymer and silanols on oxidized PDMS surface were crosslinked by heating at 110 degrees C. The coating process could be completed within half hour. Poly(dimethylacrylamide-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PDMA-co-GMA), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-g-glycidyl methacrylate (PVP-g-GMA) and poly(vinyl alcohol)-g-glycidyl methacrylate (PVA-g-GMA) (D. P. Wu, B. X. Zhao, Z. P. Dai, J. H. Qin and B. C. Lin, Lab Chip, 2006, 6, 942) were employed as examples here. Unlike PDMA, PVP, and PVA themselves, these epoxy-modified hydrophilic polymers could be directly used as static surface coatings on oxidized PDMS, and inhibited electroosmotic flow (EOF) within pH 3-11. It was also found that hard baking of PDMS at 150 degrees C for 24 hours before surface coating could greatly retard surface hydrophobicity recovery after oxygen plasma exposure, which strengthened epoxy-modified polymer coatings on oxidized PDMS surface, and resulted in EOF less than 0.2 x 10(-4) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) (pH 9.0) within two weeks. On epoxy-modified polymer coated PDMS microchips, basic proteins, peptides and DNA fragments could be separated satisfactorily, in which more than 2 x 10(4) plates per 2 cm and less than 3% RSD (>8 runs) for migration time were obtained for lysozyme.

A rapid CZE method for the analysis of benzodiazepines in spiked beverages

A rapid CZE method was developed for the simultaneous determination of nine benzodiazepines in spiked beverages (nitrazepam oxazepam, alprazolam, flunitrazepam, temazepam, diazepam, 7-aminoflunitrazepam, 7-aminonitrazepam and 7-aminoclonazepam). The method employed a double-coated capillary coated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and then dextran sulphate. The BGE conditions were 100 mM ammonium phosphate buffer, pH 2.5, which gave baseline resolution between consecutive peaks and a run time of less than 6.5 min. This method offers improvements in both resolution and run time, compared to those attained under analogous conditions with an uncoated capillary. The validated method was successfully applied to beverages that had been spiked with benzodiazepines at concentrations simulating prescription tablets. No sample pretreatment was required to quantify five benzodiazepines in Coca-Cola, orange juice, beer, bourbon and Bacardi. The exception was white wine, where the complex sample matrix did not enable the accurate quantification of nitrazepam.

Polypyrrole-coated capillaries for capillary zone electrophoresis

Fused-silica capillaries are permanently coated by silanization with 3-{[3-(N-pyrrole)-2-hydroxypropyl]amino}propyltriethoxysilane followed by oxidative polymerization of the pyrrole moieties with iron (III) or peroxodisulfate in the presence of chloride, perchlorate, or dextransulfate as anions. This approach allows to modulate the EOF in its magnitude as well as in its direction. With the small anions chloride and perchlorate, the EOF is reversed below pH 5 while with the large dextransulfate polyanions (DS) the EOF is relatively constant over the pH range from 2.5 to 9.4. This can be of advantage at low pH, at which the EOF of uncoated capillaries is close to zero. Application for separation of some herbicides is shown. The lifetime of PP-modified capillaries is satisfactory: the decrease in EOF is less than 3% during 80 analyses (160 min) and less than 5% over three months of storage. The reproducibility of capillary modification is about 5% (RSD of EOF).

Separation of mixtures of acidic and basic peptides at neutral pH

Mixtures of acidic and basic peptides composed of the phosphorylated and nonphosphorylated forms of peptide substrates for kinases and a phosphatase were separated by capillary electrophoresis (CE) in buffer conditions compatible with live mammalian cells. The separation of such mixtures was especially challenging given the high salt and neutral pH of the requisite physiologic buffers. Due to poor peak reproducibility in bare capillaries, several strategies were implemented to improve the electrophoretic separation of the peptide mixtures. Covalent coating of the capillary with the neutral polymer poly(dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) resulted in a 2-fold improvement in the migration time RSD, but required the use of hydrodynamic flow to overcome the differing electrophoretic mobilities (microeo) of the peptides at neutral pH. This parabolic fluid flow diminished separation efficiency almost 5-fold. Polarity switching during the CE run was used to overcome the opposed microeo, but required the retention of hydrodynamic flow and consequent reduction in separation efficiency. The most efficient separations were seen with the use of covalently-linked, charged polymer coatings to maintain electroosmotic flow and to reduce wall interactions. Two such coatings were tested in the current study. Relative to the PDMA coating, an anionic poly(acrylate) improved the average migration time RSD of six peptides from 1.3 to 0.85% and average separation efficiency from 4.8 to 18.0 (x 10(4) plates/m). Likewise, cationic poly([3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]-trimethylammonium) improved the average migration time RSD of eight peptides from 1.2 to 1.1% and average separation efficiency from 4.8 to 33.9 (x 10(4) plates/m). These findings will be of value to the growing number of applications for analytical techniques utilizing CE for cellular analysis and biochemical studies.
