The structure of mixed nonionic surfactant monolayers at the air–water interface: the effects of different alkyl chain lengths

Adsorption of sophorolipid biosurfactants on their own and mixed with sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, at the air/water interface

The adsorption of the lactonic (LS) and acidic (AS) forms of sophorolipid and their mixtures with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) has been measured at the air/water interface by neutron reflectivity, NR. The AS and LS sophorolipids adsorb with Langmuir-like adsorption isotherms. The more hydrophobic LS is more surface active than the AS, with a lower critical micellar concentration, CMC, and stronger surface adsorption, with an area/molecule ∼70 Å(2) compared with 85 Å(2) for the AS. The acidic sophorolipid shows a maximum in its adsorption at the CMC which appears to be associated with a mixture of different isomeric forms. The binary LS/AS and LS/LAS mixtures show a strong surface partitioning in favor of the more surface active and hydrophobic LS component but are nevertheless consistent with ideal mixing at the interface. In contrast, the surface composition of the AS/LAS mixture is much closer to the solution composition, but the surface mixing is nonideal and can be accounted for by regular solution theory, RST. In the AS/LS/LAS ternary mixtures, the surface adsorption is dominated by the sophorolipid, and especially the LS component, in a way that is not consistent with the observations for the binary mixtures. The extreme partitioning in favor of the sophorolipid for the LAS/LS/AS (1:2) mixtures is attributed to a reduction in the packing constraints at the surface due to the AS component. Measurements of the surface structure reveal a compact monolayer for LS and a narrow solvent region for LS, LS/AS, and LS/LAS mixtures, consistent with the more hydrophobic nature of the LS component. The results highlight the importance of the relative packing constraints on the adsorption of multicomponent mixtures, and the impact of the lactonic form of the sophorolipid on the adsorption of the sophorolipid/LAS mixtures.

Solution self-assembly and adsorption at the air-water interface of the monorhamnose and dirhamnose rhamnolipids and their mixtures

The self-assembly in solution and adsorption at the air-water interface, measured by small-angle neutron scattering, SANS, and neutron reflectivity, NR, of the monorhamnose and dirhamnose rhamnolipids (R1, R2) and their mixtures, are discussed. The production of the deuterium-labeled rhamnolipids (required for the NR studies) from a Pseudomonas aeruginosa culture and their separation into the pure R1 and R2 components is described. At the air-water interface, R1 and R2 exhibit Langmuir-like adsorption isotherms, with saturated area/molecule values of about 60 and 75 Å(2), respectively. In R1/R2 mixtures, there is a strong partitioning of R1 to the surface and R2 competes less favorably because of the steric or packing constraints of the larger R2 dirhamnose headgroup. In dilute solution (<20 mM), R1 and R2 form small globular micelles, L(1), with aggregation numbers of about 50 and 30, respectively. At higher solution concentrations, R1 has a predominantly planar structure, L(α) (unilamellar, ULV, or bilamellar, BLV, vesicles) whereas R2 remains globular, with an aggregation number that increases with increasing surfactant concentration. For R1/R2 mixtures, solutions rich in R2 are predominantly micellar whereas solutions rich in R1 have a more planar structure. At an intermediate composition (60 to 80 mol % R1), there are mixed L(α)/L(1) and L(1)/L(α) regions. However, the higher preferred curvature associated with R2 tends to dominate the mixed R1/R2 microstructure and its associated phase behavior.

Mixing behavior of the biosurfactant, rhamnolipid, with a conventional anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate

The use of small angle neutron scattering, SANS, neutron reflectivity, NR, and surface tension to study the mixing properties of the biosurfactant rhamnolipid with a conventional anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl 6-benzene sulfonate, LAS, is reported. The monorhamnose rhamnolipid, R1, mixes close to ideally with LAS at the air-water interface, whereas for mixtures of LAS with the dirhamnose rhamnolipid, R2, the LAS strongly partitions to the air-water interface relative to R2, probably because of the steric hindrance of the larger R2 headgroup. These trends in the binary mixtures are also reflected in the ternary R1/R2/LAS mixtures. However, for these ternary mixtures, there is also a pronounced synergy in the total adsorption, which reaches a maximum for a LAS/rhamnolipid mole ratio of about 0.6 and a R1/R2 mol ratio of about 0.5, an effect which is not observed in the binary mixtures. In solution, the R1/LAS mixtures form relatively small globular micelles, L(1), at low surfactant concentrations (<20 mM), more planar structures (lamellar, L(α), unilamellar/multilamellar vesicles, ulv/mlv) are formed at higher surfactant concentrations for R1 and LAS rich compositions, and a large mixed phase (L(α)/L(1) and L(1)/L(α)) region forms at intermediate surfactant compositions. In contrast, for the R2/LAS mixtures, the higher preferred curvature of R2 dominates the phase behavior. The predominant microstructure is in the form of small globular micelles, except for solution compositions rich in LAS (>80 mol % LAS) where more planar structures are formed. For the ternary mixtures, there is an evolution in the resulting phase behavior from one dominated by L(1) (R2 rich) to one dominated by planar structures, L(α), (R1, LAS rich), and which strongly depends upon the LAS/rhamnolipid and R1/R2 mole ratio.

Adsorption layer characteristics of mixed oxyethylated surfactant solutions

In the presented work, bubble profile analysis tensiometry is used to study the equilibrium surface tensions and the rheological behavior of solutions of mixed oxyethylated alcohols (C(12)EO(5)/C(14)EO(8)) and their mixtures with polyethylene glycol octylphenyl ethers (Triton X45/Triton X165). For the analysis of the experimental data, a new theoretical model for mixtures of two nonionic oxyethylated surfactants was employed which assumes two states of surfactant molecules with different molar areas in the surface layer and an intrinsic compressibility of the molecules in the state of closest packing. The theoretical models allow an accurate description of the experimental equilibrium surface tensions for all studied mixed solutions. For the analysis of the rheological behavior of the studied mixed surfactant solutions, the theory for a diffusional adsorption mechanism was applied, and a satisfactory agreement between the experimental data and the calculated viscoelasticity modulus and phase angle was achieved.

Nonionic surfactant adsorption at the ethylammonium nitrate surface: a neutron reflectivity and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy study

The adsorbed layers of polyoxyethylene n-alkyl ether surfactants C(12)E(4), C(14)E(4), and C(16)E(4) at the EAN surface have a headgroup layer that is thin and compact (only approximately 30 vol % EAN). The headgroups do not adopt a preferred orientation and are disordered within the ethylene oxide layer. Alkyl tails contain a significant number of gauche defects indicating a high degree of conformational disorder. The thickness of the tail layer increases with increasing alkyl chain length, while the headgroup layer shows little change. Lowering the C(12)E(4) concentration from 1 to 0.1 wt % decreases the adsorbed amount, and the headgroup layer becomes thinner and less solvated, whereas C(14)E(4) and C(16)E(4) adsorbed layers are unaffected by dilution over the same concentration range. The C(16)E(4) layer thickness increases and area per molecule decreases on warming to 60 degrees C, but the adsorbed layer structures of C(12)E(4) and C(14)E(4) are unchanged. Both effects are attributed to surfactant solubility.

Unexpected adsorption behavior of nonionic surfactants from glycol solvents

Adsorption and interfacial properties of model methyl-capped nonionic surfactants C8E4OMe [C8H17O(C2H4O)4CH3] and C10E4OMe [C10H21O(C2H4O)4CH3] were studied in water and water/ethylene glycol mixtures as well as pure ethylene glycol. Critical micellar concentrations (cmc's), surface tensions, and surface excess were determined using surface tension (ST) and neutron reflection (NR) as a function of solvent type and surfactant tail length. The ST results show a strong dependence on solvent type in terms of cmc. The NR data were analyzed using a single-layer model for the adsorbed surfactant films. Surprisingly, the adsorption parameters obtained in both water and pure ethylene glycol were very similar, and variations in film thickness or area per molecule are negligible in respect of the uncertainties. Similarly, for C10E4OMe, estimates for the free energies of adsorption and micellization show only a weak solvent dependence. These results suggest that for such model nonionic surfactants dilute solution properties are dictated by solvophobicity, which is quite similar for this class of water, glycol, and water-glycol mixtures. More specifically, the nature of the adsorption layer appears to be hardly affected by the type of solvent subphase. The findings highlight the significance of solvophobicity and show that model nonionic surfactants can behave very similarly in hydrogen-bonding glycol solvents and water.

Small-angle neutron scattering studies of an adsorbed non-ionic surfactant (C12E24) on hydrophobised silica particles in water

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies of aqueous dispersions of Stöber silica particles (which have been hydrophobised by having 1-octadecanol grafted to their surface), carrying an adsorbed layer of the nonionic surfactant C12E24, in water, have been performed as a function of temperature. Using mixtures of D2O and H2O, the composition of the continuous phase was adjusted to have the same scattering length density as the silica particles. Hence, only the scattering from the 1-octadecanol and C12E24 layers was detected. The data have been analyzed using both a surface Guinier analysis and a two-layer structure model. It has been found that a step profile best describes the inner combined adsorbed layer (1-octadecanol grafted chains, plus the penetrating alkyl chains from the surfactant) and a semi-Gaussian profile the extended poly(ethylene oxide) outer layer. Both analyses demonstrated that the combined surface layer contracted with increasing temperature.

Penetration of surfactant solutions into hydrophobic capillaries

The initial rise velocity of surfactant solutions in hydrophobic capillaries is independent of time (F. Tiberg, B. Zhmud, K. Hallstensson and M. von Bahr, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2000, 2, 5189). By analogy with the hydrodynamics of an overflowing cylinder, we present a steady-state solution for capillary penetration in which the velocity is determined by the adsorption kinetics at the air-water interface. Good agreement between the model predictions and experimental data of Tiberg and coworkers is obtained for the non-ionic surfactant C10E6 under the assumption of diffusion-controlled adsorption. The longer chain homologue, C14E6, shows evidence of kinetic barriers to adsorption.

NEUTRON REFLECTION FROM LIQUID INTERFACES

Recent applications of neutron reflectometry to the study of wet interfaces are described. An outline is given of the basic principles that allow the techniques to determine composition and structure in a variety of situations. These are the adsorption of surfactant molecules at air/liquid and solid/liquid interfaces, the shape of the segment-density profiles of different types of polymer, including block copolymers and polyelectrolytes, adsorption in mixed surfactant and polymer/surfactant systems, and interfacial systems of biophysical interest.

Surface and solution behavior of the mixed dialkyl chain cationic and nonionic surfactants

The surface and solution behavior of the mixed dialkyl chain cationic and nonionic surfactant mixture of dihexadecyldimethylammonium bromide, DHDAB, and hexaethylene monododecyl ether, C12E6, has been investigated, using primarily the scattering techniques of small-angle neutron scattering and neutron reflectivity. Within the time scale of the measurements, the adsorption of the pure component C12E6 at the air-solution interface shows no time dependence. In contrast, the adsorption of the DHDAB/C12E6 mixture and pure DHDAB has a pronounced time dependence. The characteristic time for adsorption varies with surfactant concentration, composition, and temperature. It is approximately 2-3 h for the DHDAB/C12E6 mixture, dependent upon concentration and composition, and approximately 50 min for DHDAB. At the air-solution interface, the equilibrium composition of the adsorbed layer shows a marked departure from ideal mixing, which is dependent upon both the solution concentration and the concentration of added electrolyte. In contrast, the composition of the aggregates in the bulk solution that are in equilibrium with the surface is close to ideal mixing, as expected for solution concentrations well in excess of the critical micellar concentration. The structure of the mixed adsorbed layer has been measured and compared with the structure of the equivalent pure surfactant monolayer, and no substantial changes in structure or conformation are observed. The extreme departure from ideal mixing in the adsorption behavior of the DHDAB/C12E6 mixture is discussed in the context of the structure of the adsorbed layer, changes in the underlying solution structures, and the failure of regular solution theory to predict such behavior.
