Characterization of differentiation antigens expressed in bovine lymphosarcomas

Nodal, uterine and meningeal gamma(delta) T-cell lymphomas in cattle

Three cases of bovine gamma(delta) T-cell lymphoma without skin involvement are described. Case 1 was a 17-month-old Holstein heifer with generalized lymphadenopathy. Case 2 was a 4-year-old Holstein cow that had multiple tumour masses in the uterine body and horns. Case 3, a 23-month-old Holstein bull was presented with generalized tremor, nystagmus and hyperesthaesia, and there were several tumour masses in the meninges. Cases 1 and 2 had epitheliotropic neoplastic infiltrates in the tonsillar epithelium and endometrial glands, respectively. Immunohistochemistry showed CD3+, WC1+, CD79a- lymphoma cells in all cases, and perforin was positive in two cases. Electron-dense granules were present in many neoplastic cells of all cases. These findings supported the cytotoxic gamma(delta) T-cell origin of the present lymphomas. Bovine gamma(delta) T-cell lymphoma may originate in a wide variety of anatomical sites and may be classified into several histological subtypes.

Clinical, haematological, immunohistochemical and pathological findings in 10 cattle with cutaneous lymphoma

This paper describes the clinical, haematological, immunohistochemical and pathological findings in 10 female cattle with cutaneous lymphoma. The most striking clinical finding was multifocal intracutaneous nodules, which were firm, hairless and sometimes covered with haemorrhagic crusts. All the animals had multiple lymphadenopathy. Eight of the animals had leucocytosis and two also had lymphocytosis. In seven animals, a definitive diagnosis of lymphosarcoma was made on the basis of biopsies of intracutaneous nodules or fine needle aspirates of superficial lymph nodes. In some of the cattle the kidneys, heart, spleen and lungs were affected.

Immunohistochemical characterization of lymphosarcoma in two alpacas (Lama pacos)

Species cross-reactive anti-peptide antibodies were assessed in formalin-fixed tissue for use in immunophenotyping of lymphosarcoma in two alpacas. Diagnosis of lymphosarcoma was made by routine histopathological examination. Primary antibodies used for immunophenotyping were anti-human CD3 and anti-human CD5 for T cells; and anti-human CD79a and anti-human CD79b for B cells/plasma cells. In one case, most of the neoplastic cells were labelled with both anti-CD3 and anti-CD79b, and smaller numbers were labelled with anti-CD79a. The other case was classified as a B-cell tumour on the basis of labelling of the majority of neoplastic cells with anti-CD79b and anti-CD79a. This is the first recorded attempt at immunophenotyping lymphosarcoma in alpacas and, to our knowledge, the first record of presumptive co-expression of T- and B-cell-associated molecules in lymphosarcoma in the veterinary literature.

Myeloblastic leukemia with massive neoplastic infiltration of the skin and mediastinum in a cow

An acute myeloblastic leukemia was found in a 3.5-year-old Holstein cow. The neoplasm was characterized by massive tumor growths, and there were multiple tumor nodules in the dermis or subcutis and a large tumor mass in the mediastinum. This tumor showed negative reactivity for CD3, CD79a, major histocompatibility complex class II and myeloid/histiocyte antigen. Ultrastructural features such as dispersed cytoplasmic granules and poorly developed organelles were compatible with those of early promyelocytes.
