Electrochemical behaviour of Au(111) vicinal faces: atomic structure stability of Au(755) and Au(332) surfaces

Directing the diffusive motion of fullerene-based nanocars using nonplanar gold surfaces

A new method for guiding the motion of fullerene and fullerene-based nanocars is introduced in this paper. The effects of non-flat substrates on the motion of C₆₀, a nanocar and a nanotruck are investigated at different conditions and temperatures. Their behavior is studied using two different approaches: analyzing the variation in potential energy and conducting all-atom classical molecular dynamics simulations. This paper proposes that the use of a stepped substrate will make their motion more predictable and controllable. The results of the simulations show that C₆₀ stays on the top side of the step and cannot jump over the step at temperatures of 400 K and lower. However, at temperatures of 500 K and higher, C₆₀ has sufficient energy to travel to the down side of the step. C₆₀ attaches to the edge and moves just alongside of the edge when it is on the down side of the step. The edge also restricts the motion of C₆₀ alongside the edge and reduces its range of motion. By considering the motion of C₆₀, the general behavior of the nanocar and nanotruck is predictable. The nanocar stays on the top side of the step at temperatures of 400 K and less; at 500 K and higher temperatures, its wheels jump off the edge, and its range of motion is restricted. The relatively rigid chassis of the nanotruck does not allow the free individual motion of the wheels. As a result, the entire nanotruck stays on the top side of the step, even at 600 K. A pathway with the desired route can be fabricated for the motion of C₆₀ and nanocars using the method presented in this paper. This represents a step towards the directional motion of C₆₀ and nanocars.

Oscillating edge states in one-dimensional MoS2 nanowires

Reducing the dimensionality of transition metal dichalcogenides to one dimension opens it to structural and electronic modulation related to charge density wave and quantum correlation effects arising from edge states. The greater flexibility of a molecular scale nanowire allows a strain-imposing substrate to exert structural and electronic modulation on it, leading to an interplay between the curvature-induced influences and intrinsic ground-state topology. Herein, the templated growth of MoS₂ nanowire arrays consisting of the smallest stoichiometric MoS₂ building blocks is investigated using scanning tunnelling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. Our results show that lattice strain imposed on a nanowire causes the energy of the edge states to oscillate periodically along its length in phase with the period of the substrate topographical modulation. This periodic oscillation vanishes when individual MoS₂ nanowires join to form a wider nanoribbon, revealing that the strain-induced modulation depends on in-plane rigidity, which increases with system size.

Unusual properties arise in transition metal dichalcogenides as dimensionality decreases. Here, the authors introduce a templated growth approach to precisely control the width of MoS₂ nanowires on a substrate, allowing them to reveal a relationship between size and electronic properties.

In Situ Stress and Nanogravimetric Measurements during Underpotential Deposition of Bismuth on (111)-Textured Au

The surface stress associated with the underpotential deposition (upd) of bismuth on (111)-textured Au is examined, using the wafer curvature method, in acidic perchlorate and nitrate supporting electrolyte. The surface stress is correlated to Bi coverage by independent nanogravimetric measurements using an electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance. The mass increase measured in the presence of perchlorate is consistent with the (2 x 2) and (p x square root 3)-2Bi adlayers reported in the literature. ClO(4)(-) does not play a significant role in the upd process. The complete Bi monolayer causes an overall surface stress change of about -1.4 N m(-1). We attribute this compressive stress to the formation of Bi-Au bonds which partially satisfy the bonding requirements of the Au surface atoms, thereby reducing the tensile surface stress inherent to the clean Au surface. At higher Bi coverage, an additional contribution to the compressive stress is due to the electrocompression of the (p x square root 3)-2Bi adlayer. In nitric acid electrolyte, NO(3)(-) coadsorbs with Bi over the entire upd region but has little fundamental impact on adlayer structure and stress.

Supramolecular nanostructures of 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxylic acid at electrified Au(111)/0.05 M H2SO4 interfaces: an in situ scanning tunneling microscopy study

The potential-induced adsorption and self-assembly of 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxylic acid (TMA) was investigated at the electrified Au(111)/0.05 M H2SO4 interface by in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and surface enhanced infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) in combination with electrochemical techniques. Depending on the applied electric field, TMA forms five distinctly different, highly ordered supramolecular adlayers on Au(111) surfaces. We have elucidated their real-space structures at the molecular scale. In the potential range -0.25 V < E < 0.20 V, planar-oriented TMA molecules form a hexagonal open-ring honeycomb structure, Ia, a hydrogen-bonded ribbon-type phase, Ib, and a herringbone-type phase, Ic, stabilized by directional hydrogen bonding and weak substrate-adsorbate interactions. Interfacial water molecules are being replaced. In 0.20 V < or = E < 0.40 V, e.g., around the potential of zero charge, and at slightly higher coverages, a close-packed physisorbed adlayer of hydrogen-bonded TMA dimers, II, was observed. Further increase of the electrode potential to positive charge densities causes an orientation change from planar to upright. An initially disordered phase, IIIa, transforms into an ordered, stripelike chemisorbed adlayer, IIIb, of perpendicularly oriented TMA molecules. One carboxylate group per molecule is bound to the electrode surface, while the two other protonated carboxyl groups are directed toward the electrolyte and act as structure-determining components of a hydrogen-bonded two-dimensional ladder-type network. Structural transitions between the various types of ordered molecular adlayers are attributed to (hole) nucleation and growth processes.
