Electrochemistry of heteropolyanions in coulombically linked self-assembled monolayers

Photoelectrocatalytic selective removal of group-targeting thiol-containing heterocyclic pollutants

The removal of a class of toxic thiol-containing heterocyclic pollutants from complex water matrices has great environmental significance. In this study, a novel photoanode (Au/MIL100(Fe)/TiO₂) with dual recognition functions was designed for selective group-targeting photoelectrocatalytic removal of thiol-containing heterocyclic pollutants from various aquatic systems. The average degradation and adsorption removal efficiency of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and 2-mercaptobenzoxazole were still above 96.7% and 13.5% after selective treatment with Au/MIL100(Fe)/TiO₂ even coexisting with 10-fold concentration of macromolecular interferents (sulfide lignin and natural organic matters) and the same concentration of micromolecular structural analogues. While they were below 71.6% and 3.9% after non-selective treatment with TiO₂. Targets in the actual system were selectively removed to 0.9 µg L^-1, which is 1/10 of that after non-selective treatment. FTIR, XPS and operando electrochemical infrared results proved that the highly specific recognition mechanism was mainly attributable to both the size screening of MIL100(Fe) toward targets and Au-S bond formed between -SH group of targets and Au of Au/MIL100(Fe)/TiO₂. •OH are the reactive oxygen species. The degradation mechanism was further investigated via excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy and LC-MS. This study provides new guidelines for the selective group-targeting removal of toxic pollutants with characteristic functional groups from complex water matrices.

Water-soluble titanium-polyoxomolybdate with external μ3 bridging oxygen coordination on a lacunary Keggin structure

Polyoxometalate-Promoted Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction at Nanostructured Silver in Dimethylformamide

Electrochemical reduction of CO₂ is a promising method to convert CO₂ into fuels or useful chemicals, such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons, and alcohols. In this study, nanostructured Ag was obtained by electrodeposition of Ag in the presence of a Keggin type polyoxometalate, [PMo₁₂O₄₀]^3- (PMo). Metallic Ag is formed upon reduction of Ag⁺. Adsorption of PMo on the surface of the newly formed Ag lowers its surface energy thus stabilizes the nanostructure. The electrocatalytic performance of this Ag-PMo nanocomposite for CO₂ reduction was evaluated in a CO₂ saturated dimethylformamide medium containing 0.1 M [ n-Bu₄N]PF₆ and 0.5% (v/v) added H₂O. The results show that this Ag-PMo nanocomposite can catalyze the reduction of CO₂ to CO with an onset potential of -1.70 V versus Fc^0/+, which is only 0.29 V more negative than the estimated reversible potential (-1.41 V) for this process and 0.70 V more positive than that on bulk Ag metal. High faradaic efficiencies of about 90% were obtained over a wide range of applied potentials. A Tafel slope of 60 mV dec^-1 suggests that rapid formation of *CO₂^•- is followed by the rate-determining protonation step. This is consistent with the voltammetric data which suggest that the reduced PMo interacts strongly with CO₂ (and presumably CO₂^•-) and hence promotes the formation of CO₂^•-.

Enhancement of nitrite and nitrate electrocatalytic reduction through the employment of self-assembled layers of nickel- and copper-substituted crown-type heteropolyanions

Multilayer assemblies of two crown-type type heteropolyanions (HPA), [Cu20Cl(OH)24(H2O)12(P8W48O184)](25-) and Ni4(P8W48O148)(WO2)](28-), have been immobilized onto glassy carbon electrode surfaces via the layer-by-layer (LBL) technique employing polycathion-stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNP) as the cationic layer within the resulting thin films characterized by electrochemical and physical methods. The redox behaviors of both HPA monitored during LBL assembly with cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy revealed significant changes by immobilization. The presence of AgNPs led to the retention of film porosity and electronic conductivity, which has been shown with impedance and voltammeric studies of film permeabilities toward reversible redox probes. The resulting films have been characterized by physical methods. Finally, the electrocatalytic performance of obtained films with respect to nitrite and nitrate electrocatalytic reduction has been comparatively studied for both catalysts. Nickel atoms trapped inside HPA exhibited a higher specific activity for reduction.

Electrochemistry of ITO electrode modified by multilayer ultrathin films based on crown-shaped polyoxomolybdate

The electrochemical multilayer films of crown-shaped polyoxomolybdate Na21{[Na5(H2O)14] intersection[Mo(V)(20)Mo(VI)(26)O134(OH)10(mu-CH3COO)4]}.CH3COONa.90H2O (Mo46) and polyelectrolytes by layer-by-layer assembly were investigated. The stable multilayer films were assembled by alternate adsorption of negatively charged POM and positively charged polyelectrolytes is from their aqueous dispersions. UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to monitor the regular growth of the multilayer films. The multilayer films-modified ITO electrode was used for the detection of electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of nitrite, bromate, and hydrogen peroxide. The proposed novel immobilized method exhibited good stability, reproducibility and high sensitivity for the determination of electrocatalytic, which is important for practical application.

Assembly of alternating polycation and DNA multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption

The assembly of alternating DNA and positively charged poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption has been studied. The real-time surface plasmon resonance (BIAcore) technique was used to characterize and monitor the formation of multilayer films in solution in real time continuously. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV-vis absorbance measurements were also used to study the film assembly, and linear film growth was observed. All the results indicate that the uniform multilayer can be obtained on the poly(ethylenimine)- (PEI-) coated substrate surface. The kinetics of the adsorption of DNA on PDDA surface was also studied by the real-time BIAcore technique; the observed rate constant was calculated using a Langmuir model (k(obs) = (1.28 +/- 0.08) x 10(-2) s(-1).

Differentiating the orientations of photosynthetic reaction centers on Au electrodes linked by different bifunctional reagents

The photosynthetic reaction center (RC) composite film was fabricated by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on the Au electrode with two different bifunctional reagents, 4-aminothiophenol (ATP) and 2-mercaptoethylamine (MEA), respectively. The square wave voltametry (SWV), bulk electrolysis and photocurrent test were employed for characterizing the composite film. The dramatic different electrochemical characteristics were observed for the two types of films, which strongly suggested an orientational difference for RC arising from the structural difference between the two bifunctional reagents. For RC-MEA film, three redox peaks which implying electron transfer (ET) between the primary donor (P) and the bacteriopheophytin (Bphe) were observed. While for RC-ATP film, two redox peaks implying ET between the nonheme iron and the primary quinone (Q(A)) were observed. The ET behavior driven by electric field also supported the result that the RC could be linked to the electrode at different sites. The site-specific immobilization approach reported here supplies a method to differentiate the protein orientation.
