Abstract
The management of pathogen detection using a rapid and cost-effective method presents a major challenge to the biological safety of the world. The field of pathogen detection is nascent and therefore, faces a dynamic set of challenges as the field evolves. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), or kala-azar is the most severe form of leishmaniasis. Delay to the accurate diagnosis and treatment is likely to lead to fatality. The reliable, fast and sensitive detection is closely linked to safe and effective treatment of Leishmania spp. Despite several routine and old method for sensitive and specificity detection of Leishmania spp, there is highly demand for developing modern and powerfully system. In this study a novel ultra-sensitive DNA-based biosensor was prepared for detection of Leishmania spp. For the first time, the specific and thiolated sequences of the Leishmania spp genome (5'-SH-[CH2 ]6 ATCTCGTAAGCAGATCGCTGTGTCAC-3') were recognized by electrochemical methods. Also, selectivity of the proposed bioassay was examined by three sequences that were mismatched in 1, 2, and 3 nucleotides. The linear range (10-6 to 10-21 M) and limit of detection (LLOQ = 1 ZM) obtained are remarkable in this study. Also, simple and cost-effective construction of genosensors was another advantage of the proposal DNA-based assay. The experimental results promise a fast and simple method in detection of kala-azar patients with huge potential of the nanocomposite-based probe for development of ideal biosensors.

Abstract
Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 2-3 nm in diameter were reproducibly synthesized by reduction of H₂PtCl₆ solution containing inositol hexaphosphate (IP₆) as the stabilizing agent. Single crystals with Pt(111) faces of the resulting cubic nanoparticles were revealed by the electron diffraction pattern. The PtNPs-IP₆ nanoparticles were used to modify an electrode as a nonenzymatic sensor for H₂O₂ detection, exhibiting a fast response and high sensitivity. A low detection limit of 2.0 × 10⁻⁷ M (S/N = 3) with two linear ranges between 2.4 × 10⁻⁷ and 1.3 × 10⁻³ M (R² = 0.9987) and between 1.3 × 10⁻³ and 1.3 × 10⁻² M (R² = 0.9980) was achieved. The attractive electrochemical performance of PtNPs-IP₆ enables it to be employed as a promising material for the development of Pt-based analytical systems and other applications.

Abstract
Fabrication of a novel capacitive immunosensor based on grafted ethylene diamine and self-assembled gold nanoparticle monolayer on glassy carbon electrode for the detection of Salmonella spp. is described for the first time. In the present study, the Salmonella spp. monoclonal antibodies (denoted as McAbs) was immobilized on gold nanoparticles. Interaction of McAbs and Salmonella spp. was detected directly using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. The experimental results showed that the concentration of antigen was measured through the relative change in capacitance in the corresponding specific binding of Salmonella spp. and McAbs. Under the optimized conditions, the relative changes in capacitance were proportional to the logarithmic values of Salmonella spp. concentrations in the range of 1.0 x 10(2) to 1.0 x 10(5) CFU mL(-1) (r = 0.991) with the detection limit of 1.0 x 10(2) CFU mL(-1). The stability of proposed immunosensor could be estimated by determining the relative change in capacitance, which remained almost the same in two months and decreased gradually to 85.3% of initial value after four months' storage. The used immunosensor could be regenerated repeatedly by immersing in glycine-HCl buffer solution (pH 2.8). Finally, the proposed immunosensor was successfully used for the detection of Salmonella spp. in lab-processed commercial pork samples.

Abstract
The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behaviour of luminol on a silver nanoparticle self-assembled gold electrode in neutral and alkaline solutions was investigated using conventional cyclic voltammetry (CV). The silver nanoparticle self-assembled gold electrode exhibited excellent ECL properties for the luminol ECL system. In neutral solutions, four ECL peaks (ECL-1-ECL-4) were observed at 0.73, 1.15, -0.46 and -1.35 V (vs. SCE), respectively. The intensities of these peaks were enhanced significantly compared with those on a bulk gold electrode and a gold nanoparticle self-assembled gold electrode. It was found that ECL-1 and ECL-2 on a silver nanoparticle-modified electrode were about 1000 and 1770 times stronger than those on a bare Au electrode and were about 17 and 15 times stronger than those on a gold nanoparticle-modified electrode, respectively. In alkaline solutions, four ECL peaks were also observed that were much stronger than those in neutral solutions, and ECL-1 and ECL-2 were enhanced by about three orders and one order of magnitude compared with those on a bare Au electrode and on a gold nanoparticle self-assembled electrode, respectively. Moreover, the silver nanoparticle-modified electrode exhibited good stability and reproducibility for luminol ECL. These peaks were found to depend on a number of factors, including silver nanoparticles on the surface of the modified electrode, potential scan direction, scan rate, scan range, the presence of O2 or N2, pH values, the concentrations of NaBr and luminol, and buffer solutions. The emitter of the ECL was confirmed as 3-aminophthalate by analysing the CL spectra. The surface state of the silver nanoparticle self-assembled electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the interface property of the electrode was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A mechanism for the formation of these ECL peaks is proposed. The results demonstrate that luminol has excellent ECL properties, such as strong ECL intensity and good reproducibility on a silver nanoparticle-modified gold electrode, in both neutral and alkaline solutions, which is of great potential in analytical applications.

Abstract
A comparison of the analytical performances of several enzyme biosensor designs, based on the use of different tailored gold nanoparticle-modified electrode surfaces, is discussed. Glucose oxidase (GOx) and the redox mediator tetrathiafulvalene were coimmobilized in all cases by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. The biosensor designs tested were based on the use of (i) colloidal gold (Au(coll)) bound on cysteamine (Cyst) monolayers self-assembled on a gold disk electrode (AuE) and (ii) glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) modified with electrodeposited gold nanoparticles (nAu). The results obtained with these designs were compared with those provided by a GOx/Cyst-AuE and a GOx/MPA-AuE. In the second case (ii), configurations based on direct immobilization of GOx on nAu (GOx/nAu-GCE) or on Cyst or MPA self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) previously bound on gold nanoparticles (GOx/Cyst-nAu-GCE or GOx/MPA-nAu-GCE, respectively) were compared. The analytical characteristics of glucose calibration plots and the kinetic parameters of the enzyme reaction were compared for all of the biosensors tested. The GOx/Au(coll)-Cyst-AuE design showed a sensitivity for glucose determination higher than that achieved with GOx/Cyst-AuE and GOx/Au(coll)-Cyst/Cyst-AuE and similar to that achieved with GOx/MPA-AuE. Moreover, the useful lifetime of one single GOx/Au(coll)-Cyst-AuE was 28 days, remarkably longer than that of the other GOx biosensor designs.

Abstract
Bioartificial liver and hepatocyte transplantation is anticipated to supply a temporary metabolic support for candidates of liver transplantation or for patients with fulminant liver failure. An essential restriction of this form is the inability to acquire an enough amount of hepatocytes. Enhancement of the proliferation and differentiated function of hepatocytes is becoming a pursued target. Here, porcine hepatocytes were successfully immobilized on nano-sized gold colloid particles to construct a "hepatocyte/gold colloid" interface at which hepatocytes can be quickly proliferated. The properties of this resulting interface were characterized and confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The proliferative mechanism of hepatocytes was also discussed. The proliferated hepatocytes could be applied to the clinic based on their excellent functions for the synthesis of protein, glucose and urea as well as lower lactate dehydrogenase release.

Abstract
The growth of cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) films on bare and Au-colloid-modified electrodes in nitrate or sulfate solutions was monitored by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance. The average efficiency of CoHCF film growth for Au colloid modified electrodes is 23 and 12 ng cm(-2) s(-1) in KNO3 and K2SO4 solutions, respectively, while those values for the bare gold electrode are 15 and 9 ng cm(-2) s(-1), respectively. In K2SO4 solution, the apparent molar masses for the Au-colloid-modified electrode at lower and higher potential is 58.4 and 37.3 g mol(-1), respectively, which is larger than those for the bare gold electrode (51.7 and 26.3 g mol(-1), respectively). The respective results were also obtained in KNO3 solution. Furthermore, the difference of the apparent molar masses at lower and higher potential for Au-colloid-modified electrodes is smaller than that for bare gold electrodes in the same electrolyte. Additionally, the mechanism of charge propagation is dependent on different anions in electrolyte solutions at higher potentials where the second redox reaction of CoHCF occurs. Therefore, the existence of Au colloids can accelerate CoHCF film growth and weaken the effect of anions on mass transport.

Abstract
Platinum nanoparticles with a diameter of 2-3 nm were prepared and used in combination with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for fabricating electrochemical sensors with remarkably improved sensitivity toward hydrogen peroxide. Nafion, a perfluorosulfonated polymer, was used to solubilize SWCNTs and also displayed strong interactions with Pt nanoparticles to form a network that connected Pt nanoparticles to the electrode surface. TEM and AFM micrographs illustrated the deposition of Pt nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes whereas cyclic voltammetry confirmed an electrical contact through SWCNTs between Pt nanoparticles and the glassy carbon (GC) or carbon fiber backing. With glucose oxidase (GOx) as an enzyme model, we constructed a GC or carbon fiber microelectrode-based biosensor that responds even more sensitively to glucose than the GC/GOx electrode modified by Pt nanoparticles or CNTs alone. The response time and detection limit (S/N = 3) of this biosensor was determined to be 3 s and 0.5 microM, respectively.
