Preparation and reactions of monocyclic bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanacyclopentenes and -pentadienes

Choosing between Ti(II) and Ti(III): selective reduction of titanocene dichloride by elemental lanthanides

The reduction of titanocene dichloride Cp2TiCl2 with lanthanide metals has led to the discovery of a surprising lanthanide effect: while with most lanthanides, a divalent [Cp2Ti] equivalent was obtained, the use of samarium or ytterbium only led to the reduction to trivalent [Cp2TiCl]-type complexes, including the structurally characterized heterobimetallic complex [Cp2Ti(μ-Cl)2SmCl2(THF)3]. These results were corroborated by reactivity studies (alkyne coupling and radical reactions), EPR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry, providing new insights into the reduction chemistry of lanthanide metals.

Formation of a spiro compound via coupling of a cyclopentadienyl ligand with a diene moiety of titanacyclopentadiene

The treatment of titanacyclopentadienes with bismuth(iii) chloride gave spiro compounds in moderate yields. Two carbon atoms of the diene moiety of the titanacyclopentadiene were connected to one carbon atom of the Cp ligand. This is in sharp contrast to the formation of dihydroindene derivatives, where two carbon-carbon bonds were formed between the diene moiety and the adjacent two carbon atoms of the Cp ligand.

Sulfur-containing stable five-membered “cycloallene” complexes: 1-thia-2-zircona- and 1-thia-2-titanacyclopenta-3,4-dienes

Stable five-membered sulfur-containing metallacyclic allenes, 1-thia-2-metallacyclopenta-3,4-diene, were synthesized from the reactions of low-valent zirconocene or titanocene with alkynylthioamides.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Phosphole-Cored Dendrimers

Phosphole-cored dendrimers having poly(benzyl ether) units through the third generation have been synthesized. The dendrimers display intense blue photoluminescence, the quantum yield increasing with the increasing generation of the dendron units. The optical properties are easily tuned by oxidation of the phosphorus atom of the phosphole ring.
