Abstract
Herein, a new reaction for the site-selective carbonylation of arenes via C(sp2)-H thianthrenation under mild conditions has been developed. With low loadings of palladium catalysts, various desired 1,2-diarylethanones are produced in good yields. This strategy also enables the late-stage modification of complex molecules, which was previously challenging with similar carbonylative Negishi-type reactions.

Abstract
In the realm of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), the 3d transition metals as photosensitizers are scarcely studied. In the present work, electronic structures, FMO, MEP surfaces, NBO analysis, energetics and photophysical properties of earth abundant metals (Mn, Fe and Co) based metalloporphyrins coordinated with NHC-carbene have been explored by using DFT and TDDFT calculations. According to formation energies and energy decomposition analysis (EDA), the cobalt based metalloporphyrins species are found to be more stable while in contrast manganese based species are predicted as more reactive among all. Also, from the ligation point of view, the TPP (meso-tetraphenylporphyrin) ligand forms more steady and rigid coordination as compare to the TTP (meso-tetratolylporphyrin) ligand. FMO analysis also support these observations. NBO and SNO results support the electronic configurations as well as unveil the controversial bonding pattern of NHCcarbon and metal atom and found that there is σ-bonding present between the metal and the NHCcarbon by the overlapping of sp-hybridized orbitals of carbenecarbon and sp/d hybrid orbital of the metal atom. TDDFT results show that the highest light harvesting efficiency (LHE) of all the studied species is found under the range of 360 nm - 380 nm (λ) and this may due to the presence of longer π-conjugations. In-depth investigation of this work may help to design new robust energy harvesting systems for high energy conversion efficiency based on earth abundance metals. Our results are in well agreement with the available experimental findings.

Abstract
New nickel complexes with tridentate phenoxy-amidate-aNHC donor groups were synthesized from the reactions between nickel acetate and imidazolium ligand precursors in net pyridine. An unusual degradation pathway was observed, leading to imidazole derivatives occupying the fourth coordination sites in these square planar complexes. A new imidazole-coordinated nickel complex was found to be efficient in catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with aryl chlorides under 3 mol% of catalyst loading. The catalytic activities were superior to those of its reported normal NHC counterpart. Instead of the common procedure of using additional phosphine, the addition of IMes·HCl significantly enhances the product yields of the catalytic reaction.

Abstract
Di(1-adamantyl)phosphine oxide (SPO-Ad: Ad2P(V)(=O)H), a stable tautomer of di(1-adamantyl)phosphinous acid (PA-Ad: Ad2P(III)-OH), was employed to synthesize two new PA-Ad-coordinated complexes, POPd-Ad and POPd2-Ad. POPd-Ad was easily transformed from POPd2-Ad in acetonitrile, and the [M - H]- ion of the deprotonated POPd-Ad was observed in the electrospray ionization-mass spectrum of POPd2-Ad. Both complexes are effective precatalysts for the Suzuki reaction of aryl chlorides. The reduction of Pd(II) in POPd-Ad and POPd2-Ad by arylboronic acid was examined, and the ideal Pd-to-PA ratio in the Suzuki reaction was found to be 1:1. The effect of temperature on the catalytic yields was studied to examine the possible ligation state of the active species and the dimer-to-monomer process of POPd2-Ad. Mononuclear and mono-ligated Pd species was assumed to be catalytically active. The electronic and steric effects of PA-Ad were slightly better than those reported for PA-tBu ( t Bu2P(III)-OH). Density functional theory calculations were performed to evaluate the formation of mono-ligated and mononuclear Pd species from POPd-Ad and POPd2-Ad. Furthermore, the reaction time and catalyst loading could be reduced for the reported POPd1-tBu precatalyst using the optimized reaction conditions for POPd-Ad. The complexes synthesized in this extensive study will complement the existing SPO-coordinated POPd series of precatalysts.

Abstract
A novel non-C2-symmetric bis-benzimidazolium salt derived from (±)-valinol has been prepared by a simple and straightforward process in good yield. The structure of bis-benzimidazolium salt provided a bulky steric group on the ethylene bridge; which facilitates the catalytic efficacy in the C(sp2)-C(sp2) formation. Its catalytic activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of unactivated aryl chlorides has been found to have high efficacy in 1 mol% Pd loading. This protocol demonstrated the potential on the synthesis of sterically hindered biaryls.

Abstract
Sonogashira coupling involves coupling of vinyl/aryl halides with terminal acetylenes catalyzed by transition metals, especially palladium and copper. This is a well known reaction in organic synthesis and plays a role in sp2-sp C-C bond formations. This cross coupling was used in synthesis of natural products, biologically active molecules, heterocycles, dendrimers, conjugated polymers and organic complexes. This review paper focuses on developments in the palladium and copper catalyzed Sonogashira cross coupling achieved in recent years concerning substrates, different catalyst systems and reaction conditions.

Abstract
A B3LYP density functional theory study on the oxidative addition of halogenobenzenes and toluene to monoligated zerovalent palladium catalysts (Pd-L) has been carried out using the "L" ligands such as phosphines, N-heterocyclic carbenes, alkynes, and alkenes. The electron deficiency of the undercoordinated Pd in Pd-L is quantified in terms of the molecular electrostatic potential at the metal center (V Pd), which showed significant variation with respect to the nature of the L ligand. Further, a strong linear correlation between ΔV Pd and the activation barrier (E act) of the reaction is established. The correlation plots between ΔV Pd and E act suggest that a priori prediction on the ability of the palladium complex to undergo oxidative addition is possible from V Pd analysis. In general, as the electron-donating nature of ligand increases, the suitability of Pd(0) catalyst to undergo oxidative addition increases. V Pd measures the electron-rich/-deficient nature of the metal center and provides a quantitative measure of the reactivity of the catalyst. By tuning the V Pd value, efficient catalysts can be designed.

One underutilized biomaterial is lignin; however, its highly crosslinked and randomly polymerized composition have rendered this biopolymer recalcitrant to existing chemical processing. More recently, insight into lignin's molecular structure has reinvigorated chemists to develop catalytic methods for lignin depolymerization. This review examines the development of transition-metal catalyzed reactions and the insights shared between the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems towards the ultimate goal of valorizing lignin to produce value-added products.
