Removal of hazardous ions from aqueous solutions: Current methods, with a focus on green ion flotation

Hazardous ions, like those of heavy metals, cause significant health and environmental problems when they are discharged into water resources naturally or through various industrial processes. Removing these ions from water is of significant importance in the provision of high-quality water for drinking and agricultural usage. This work discusses current techniques that are frequently used for the removal of heavy-metal ions from aqueous solutions by absorption, particularly the use of biodegradable surfactants in ion flotation. Certain new surfactants promise high efficiency in their use in the ion-flotation process and in their application in industrial-water treatment to remove heavy metals. As an example, this work demonstrates the high efficiency of surfactants based on an amino-acid (L-cysteine) in removing a range of heavy-metal ions in a simple, single-stage ion-flotation process. High foaming ability, the ability to operate in various temperatures and pHs, decomposing into natural products and high binding affinity for heavy-metal ions make the cysteine-based surfactants a highly suitable compound to replace current commercial surfactants in ion- and froth-flotation processes. Removal of particular ions can also be achieved in ion flotation; a suitable choice of parameters, such as pH and surfactant concentration, favours the surfactant binding to those ions. Further intensive work is required to develop an optimal process to recover valuable elements from waste solutions.

Rapid construction of substituted 3-amino-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one dipeptide scaffolds through an Ugi-4CR - Ullmann cross-coupling sequence

A 3-step methodology for the synthesis of 1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one dipeptidomimetics has been elaborated via an Ugi-4CR followed by a S-trityl deprotection and an intramolecular Cu(i)-catalyzed Ullmann condensation with moderate to good yields. In silico and NMR conformational studies showed that the lowest energy conformers stabilize γ- and β-turn structures.

Synthesis of thiophenylalanine-containing peptides via Cu(I)-mediated cross-coupling

Aryl thiolates have unique reactive, redox, electronic, and spectroscopic properties. A practical approach to synthesize peptides containing thiophenylalanine has been developed via a novel Cu(I)-mediated cross-coupling reaction between thiolacetic acid and iodophenylalanine-containing peptides in the solid phase. This approach is compatible with all canonical proteinogenic functional groups, providing general access to aryl thiolates in peptides. Peptides containing thiophenylalanine (pK(a) 6.4) were readily elaborated to contain methyl, allyl, and nitrobenzyl thioethers, disulfides, sulfoxides, sulfones, or sulfonates.

Efficient copper-catalyzed S-vinylation of thiols with vinyl halides

The synthesis of vinyl sulfides through the coupling reaction of thiols with vinyl iodides, bromides, and chlorides is described. The thiols can couple with aryl iodides in the presence of only 0.5 mol % Cu(2)O without the need for an ancillary ligand. In the presence of 5 mol % of Cu(2)O and 10 mol % 1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand, the more challenging alkyl vinyl bromides can also be coupled with thiols, giving the vinyl sulfides in good to excellent yields.

An enantioselective total synthesis of natural antibiotic marasin

Synthetic studies directed toward the allenediyne antibiotic marasin are presented. Different approaches to the installation of the optically active chiral allenediyne motif were explored en route to the synthesis of the natural product. The stereoselectivity for the construction of the chiral allenediyne motif was dependent on not only the reaction employed but also the substrate structure.

Resting state and elementary steps of the coupling of aryl halides with thiols catalyzed by alkylbisphosphine complexes of palladium

Detailed mechanistic studies on the coupling of aryl halides with thiols catalyzed by palladium complexes of the alkylbisphosphine ligand CyPF-(t)Bu (1-dicyclohexylphosphino-2-di-tert-butylphosphinoethylferrocene) are reported. The elementary steps that constitute the catalytic cycle, i.e. oxidative addition, transmetalation and reductive elimination, have been studied, and their relative rates are reported. Each of the steps of the catalytic process occurs at temperatures that are much lower than those required for the reactions catalyzed by a combination of palladium precursors and CyPF-(t)Bu. To explain these differences in rates between the catalytic and stoichiometric reactions, studies were conducted to identify the resting state of the catalyst of the reactions catalyzed by a combination of Pd(OAc)(2) and CyPF-(t)Bu, a combination of Pd(dba)(2) and CyPF-(t)Bu, or the likely intermediate Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(Ar)(Br). These data show that the major palladium complex in each case lies off of the catalytic cycle. The resting state of the reactions catalyzed by Pd(OAc)(2) and CyPF-(t)Bu was the palladium bis-thiolate complex [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(SR)(2)] (R = alkyl or aryl). The resting state in reactions catalyzed by Pd(2)(dba)(3) and CyPF-(t)Bu was the binuclear complex [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)](2)(mu(2),eta(2)-dba) (9). The resting states of reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic thiols catalyzed by [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(p-tolyl)(Br)] (3a) were the hydridopalladium thiolate complexes [Pd(CyPF-(t)Bu)(H)(SR)] (R= alkyl and aryl). All these palladium species have been prepared independently, and the mechanisms by which they enter the catalytic cycle have been examined in detail. These features of the reaction catalyzed by palladium and CyPF-(t)Bu have been compared with those of reactions catalyzed by the alkylbisphosphine DiPPF and Pd(OAc)(2) or Pd(dba)(2). Our data indicate that the resting states of these reactions are similar to each other and that our mechanistic conclusions about reactions catalyzed by palladium and CyPF-(t)Bu can be extrapolated to reactions catalyzed by complexes of other electron-rich bisphosphines.

Palladium-catalyzed intramolecular O-arylation of enolates: application to benzo[b]furan synthesis

[reaction: see text] A catalyst generated from Pd2(dba)3 and the ligand DPEphos effects intramolecular C-O bond formation between enolates and aryl halides in the conversion of 1-(2-haloaryl)ketones directly into the corresponding benzofurans. Both cyclic and acyclic ketones are efficient substrates. Thio ketones can also be employed allowing the preparation of the corresponding benzothiophenes.

Efficient solid phase synthesis of benzo[1,2,3]thiadiazoles and related structures

The first solid-phase synthesis of benzo[1,2,3]thiadiazoles was achieved by starting from resin bound ortho bromo or iodo triazenes and using a functionalization on cleavage.

Synthesis of meso-Arylsulfanyl- and Alkylsulfanyl-Substituted Porphyrins via Palladium-Mediated C−S Bond Formation

A family of new meso-arylsulfanyl- and alkylsulfanyl-substituted porphyrins were efficiently synthesized from direct reactions of meso-brominated porphyrins with thiols via palladium-mediated C-S bond formation. The catalytic method can be performed under mild conditions with both mono- and bis-substituted meso-bromoporphyrins as well as their zinc complexes and is suitable for different types of thiols. With the use of selenols, meso-seleno-substituted porphyrins can also be prepared similarly.
