Abstract
Activation of H-H, Si-H, and C-H bonds through σ-bond coordination has grown in the past 30 years from a scientific curiosity to an important tool in the functionalization of hydrocarbons. Several mechanisms were discovered via which the initially σ-bonded substrate could be converted: oxidative addition, heterolytic cleavage, σ-bond metathesis, electrophilic attack, etc. The use of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in this area is a more recent development, but obviously nanoparticles offer a much richer basis than classical homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for tuning reactivity for such a demanding process as C-H functionalization. Here, we will review the surface chemistry of nanoparticles and catalytic reactions occurring in the liquid phase, catalyzed by either colloidal or supported metal NPs. We consider nanoparticles prepared in solution, which are stabilized and tuned by polymers, ligands, and supports. The question we have addressed concerns the differences and similarities between molecular complexes and metal NPs in their reactivity toward σ-bond activation and functionalization.

Abstract
The dynamic kinetic resolution of α-keto esters via asymmetric transfer hydrogenation has been developed as a technique for the highly stereoselective construction of structurally diverse β-substituted-α-hydroxy carboxylic acid derivatives. Through the development of a privileged m-terphenylsulfonamide for (arene)RuCl(monosulfonamide) complexes with a high affinity for selective α-keto ester reduction, excellent levels of chemo-, diastereo-, and enantiocontrol can be realized in the reduction of β-aryl- and β-chloro-α-keto esters.

Abstract
[see reaction]. An efficient multigram-scale synthesis of optically pure Boc-(2S,3R,4S)-iso-dolaproine is reported using dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR). The catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl (4S)-3-(2'-pyrrolidinyl)-3-oxo-2-methyl propanoate hydrochloride using in situ generated Ru[(S)-MeO-BIPHEP]Br2 catalyst affords the anti beta-hydroxy alpha-methyl ester quantitatively. The two new stereogenic centers are simultaneously controlled with high diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
This review summarizes some recent work in the field of homogeneous ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogenation via dynamic kinetic resolution. The hydrogenation reaction of various α-substituted β-oxo esters using chiral ruthenium(II) catalysts is presented as well as the synthesis of some key intermediates of pharmaceutical interest.Key words: dynamic kinetic resolution, ruthenium, hydrogenation, α-substituted β-keto ester.

Abstract
The enantioselective ruthenium promoted hydrogenation of beta-keto ester, derived from (S)- or (R)-proline and (S)-pipecolic acid, provided a new efficient route to hydroxylated pyrrolizidine or indolizidine ring systems in diastereomeric excesses up to 99%. A practical synthesis of (+)-alpha-conhydrine is also reported.

Abstract
The known complex trans-RuCl2(NBD)Py2 (1, NBD is norbornadiene, Py is pyridine) reacts with either (R)-BINAP ((R)-2, 2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), (S;S)-Chiraphos ((2S;3S-(-)-2,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane), (S;S)-Skewphos ((2S;4S)-(-)-2,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane), (R)-(S)-Josiphos ((R)-(-)-1-[(S)-2-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocenyl]ethyl-dicyclohexylpho sphine), (R;R)-Norphos ((2R;3R)-(-)-2, 3-bis(diphenylphosphino)bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene), or (R;R)-Me-DUPHOS ((-)-1,2-bis((2R;5R)-2, 5-dimethylphospholano)benzene) to generate in high yields the crystalline complexes trans-RuCl2(P-P*)Py2 (P-P* is the corresponding chiral bis(phosphine)). The complexes trans-RuCl2(P-P*)Py2 are active enantioselective hydrogenation catalysts for ketoesters and noncarboxylic olefins in the presence of small amounts of HBF4 (aq.). They are active for hydrogenation of carboxylic substrates in the presence of Et3N. Reaction of trans-RuCl2(P-P*)Py2 with (rac)-1,2-diphenylethylene-diamine (N-N*, either enantiomer) forms in good yields the corresponding compounds trans-RuCl2(P-P*)(N-N*). Representative hydrogenations with these catalysts are presented.
