Abstract
The difference in gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) aggregation caused by different mixing orders of AuNPs, 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been scarcely reported. We have found that the color change of a ((4-MPBA + AuNPs) + H2O2) mixture caused by H2O2 is more sensitive than that of a ((4-MPBA + H2O2) + AuNPs) mixture. For the former mixture, the color changes obviously with H2O2 concentrations in the range of 0~0.025%. However, for the latter mixture, the corresponding H2O2 concentration is in the range of 0~1.93%. The mechanisms on the color change originating from the aggregation of AuNPs occurring in the two mixtures were investigated in detail. For the ((4-MPBA + H2O2) + AuNPs) mixture, free 4-MPBA is oxidized by H2O2 to form bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) disulfide (BHPD) and peroxoboric acid. However, for the ((4-MPBA+AuNPs) + H2O2) mixture, immobilized 4-MPBA is oxidized by H2O2 to form 4-hydroxythiophenol (4-HTP) and boric acid. The decrease in charge on the surface of AuNPs caused by BHPD, which has alarger steric hindrance, is poorer than that caused by -4-HTP, and this is mainly responsible for the difference in the aggregation of AuNPs in the two mixtures. The formation of boric acid and peroxoboric acid in the reaction between 4-MPBA and H2O2 can alter the pH of the medium, and the effect of the pH change on the aggregation of AuNPs should not be ignored. These findings not only offer a new strategy in colorimetric assays to expand the detection range of hydrogen peroxide concentrations but also assist in deepening the understanding of the aggregation of citrate-capped AuNPs involved in 4-MPBA and H2O2, as well as in developing other probes.

Abstract
4-Mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-mpba, C6H7BO2S) was investigated experimentally by vibrational spectroscopy. The molecular structure and spectroscopic parameters were studied by computational methods. The molecular dimer was investigated for intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Potential energy distribution analysis of normal modes was performed to identify characteristic frequencies. The present work provides a simple physical picture of the OH stretch vibrational spectra of 4-mpba and analogues of the compound studied. When the different computational methods are compared, there is a strong evidence of the better performance of the BLYP functional than the popular B3LYP functional to describe hydrogen bonding in the dimer. The findings of this research work should be useful to experimentalists in their quests for functionalised 4-mpba derivatives.

Abstract
Radiosyntheses of 18F-radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) normally require an extraordinarily high effort of technical equipment and specially trained personnel. We recently reported a novel method for the introduction of fluorine-18 into peptides for PET-imaging based on silicon-18F-chemistry (SiFA technique). We herewith introduce the first SiFA-based Kit-like radio-fluorination of a protein (rat serum albumin,RSA) and demonstrate its usefulness for in vivo imaging with microPET in normal rats as well as in a rat heterotropic transplanted heart model. As a labeling agent, we prepared 4-(di-tert-butyl[18F]fluorosilyl)benzenethiol (Si[18F]FASH)by simple isotopic exchange in 40-60% radiochemical yield (RCY) and coupled it directly to a Sulfo-SMCC derivatized RSA in an overall RCY of 12% within 20-30 min. The technically simple labeling procedure does not require any elaborated purification procedures and is a straightforward example of a successful application of Si-18F chemistry for in vivo imaging with PET.

Abstract
Broad spectrum: Novel para-functionalized aryl-di-tert-butylfluorosilanes, p-(tBu(2)FSi)C(6)H(4)X (X=functional group), have been made available and broaden the spectrum of silicon-based (18)F acceptors (SiFAs) for potential PET applications. For example, the [(18)F]maleimido derivative 1 has been employed for the synthesis of [(18)F]1- labeled rat serum albumin (RSA), the applicability of which for PET has been verified by in vivo experiments.The syntheses of the functionalized triorganofluorosilanes tBu(2)(p-XC(6)H(4))SiF (3 a, X=SH; 4 a, X=NCS; 4 b, X=NCO; 5, X=NC(4)H(2)O(2); 7, X=COOH; 8 a, X=COONC(4)H(4)O(2); 8 b, X=COOC(6)F(5)) are reported. These compounds display potential as silicon-based fluoride acceptors (SiFAs). The molecular structures of compounds 5, 7, and 8 a have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. With the exception of compounds 8 a and 8 b, all of the compounds could be (18)F-labeled by isotopic exchange in good to high radiochemical yields (RCY) with good to excellent specific activities. As proof of applicability, the maleimido-functionalized SiFA derivative 5, which is specific for thiol groups, has been used for the labeling of rat serum albumin (RSA) that had been derivatized with 2-iminothiolane. The incorporation of [(18)F]5 into the derivatized RSA reached a maximum yield after 30 min at ambient temperature. After purification, the [(18)F]RSA was evaluated in a healthy rat by means of muPET and displayed an expedient in vivo stability over 180 min.

Abstract
Two new types of boronate affinity solid phases were synthesized and characterized. The materials were prepared by silylation of porous silica gel with monochlorosilane derivatives containing synthetic sulfonyl- and sulfonamide-substituted phenylboronic acids. The new solid phases were evaluated for boronate affinity chromatography with aryl and alkyl cis-diol compounds and were found to be suitable for the retention of cis-diols under acidic conditions. Significant correlations between the retention factor (K) and the pH of the mobile phase demonstrate that the binding of cis-diols to the solid phases is best rationalized by chelation. Based on the lower pKa, caused by the electron-withdrawing effects of the sulfonyl and sulfonamide groups, these media display an enhanced affinity for cis-diols as compared with unsubstituted phenylboronic acid. Using isocratic elution, a mixture of various biologically relevant l-tyrosines, l-DOPA, and several catecholamines were resolved with a mobile phase composed of 0.05M phosphate buffer (pH 5.5). Mono-, di-, and triphosphates of adenosine were also separated at pH 6.0. Hence, the new boronate solid phase offers efficient affinity separation and purification of cis-diol-containing molecules under rather mild pH conditions.

Abstract
We report the formation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) derived from the adsorption of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA) on gold. For comparison, SAMs derived from the adsorption of thiophenol (TP), 4-mercaptophenol (MP), and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) were also examined. The structure and properties of the SAMs were evaluated by ellipsometry, contact-angle goniometry, polarization-modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Specifically, ellipsometry was used to assess the formation of monolayer films, and contact angle measurements were used to determine the surface hydrophilicity and homogeneity. Separately, PM-IRRAS was used to evaluate the molecular composition and orientation as well as the intermolecular hydrogen bonding within the SAMs. Finally, XPS was used to evaluate the film composition and surface coverage (i.e., packing density), which was observed to increase in the following order: TP < MP < MPBA < MBA. A rationalization for the observed packing differences is presented. The XPS data indicate further that ultrahigh vacuum conditions induce the partial dehydration of MPBA SAMs with the concomitant formation of surface boronic anhydride species. Overall, the analytical data collectively show that the MPBA moieties in the SAMs exist in the acid form rather than the anhydride form under ambient laboratory conditions. Furthermore, stability studies find that MPBA SAMs are surprisingly labile in basic solution, where the terminal B-C bonds are cleaved by the attack of hydroxide ion and strongly basic amine nucleophiles. The unanticipated lability observed here should be considered by those wishing to use MPBA moieties in carbohydrate-sensing applications.

Abstract
[Structure: See text] In addition to a parent zinc(II) Borromean ring (BR) complex, the preparation and characterization of two hexasubstituted BR complexes with either 4-acetoxymethylphenyl or 4-methylthiophenyl substituents associated in turn with all six pyridyl rings has been achieved convergently in good yields by appealing to the dynamic features of the reactions between primary amino groups in a preformed acyclic ligand and 2,6-diformylpyridine. Two molecules of the acyclic ligands react with two molecules of 2,6-diformylpyridine to form a cyclic [2 + 2] tetraimine in the presence of Zn(II) ions as templates in 2-propanol at 70 degrees C. The successful preparation of the two derivatives by convergent template-directed syntheses opens up opportunities to self-assemble, under equilibrium control, numerous nanoscale metallo-organic particles with potentially useful properties.
