Effects of metal primers on the bonding of an adhesive resin cement to noble metal ceramic alloys after thermal cycling

Dental Alloy Adhesive Primers and Bond Strength at Alloy-Resin Interface: A Systematic Review and Meta-analyses

The present systematic review aimed to report the studies concerning the primers in improving bond strength and identifying pertinent primers for a particular dental alloy by adhering to PRISMA precepts.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed and Semantic Scholar databases were scoured for articles using 10 search terms. In vitro studies satisfying the inclusion criteria were probed which were meticulously screened and scrutinized for eligibility adhering to the 11 exclusion criteria. The quality assessment tool for in vitro studies (QUIN Tool) containing 12 criteria was employed to assess the risk of bias (RoB).

RESULTS

A total of 48 studies assessing shear bond strength (SBS) and 15 studies evaluating tensile bond strength (TBS) were included in the qualitative synthesis. Concerning SBS, 33.4% moderate and 66.6% high RoB was observed. Concerning TBS, 26.8% moderate and 73.2% high RoB was discerned. Seventeen and two studies assessing SBS and TBS, respectively, were included in meta-analyses.

CONCLUSIONS

Shear bond strength and TBS increased for the primed alloys. Cyclic disulfide primer is best-suited for noble alloys when compared with thiol/thione primers. Phosphoric acid- and phosphonic acid ester-based primers are opportune for base alloys.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The alloy-resin interface (ARI) would fail if an inappropriate primer was selected. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate alloy adhesive primer for an alloy plays a crucial role in prosthetic success. This systematic review would help in the identification and selection of a congruous primer for a selected alloy.

Bonding performance of a thiohydantoin-methacrylate monomer on noble metal alloys

This study assessed the effect of a primer containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl-(2-thiohydantoin-4-yl)propionate (MDTHP) on the bonding of noble metal alloys to an acrylic resin. Three noble metal alloys were selected as adherends, and V-Primer containing 6-(4-vinylbenzyl-n-propyl)amino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithione was used as a comparative control. The disk specimens of each noble metal alloy were wet-ground and divided into three conditions: specimens primed with MDTHP primer or V-Primer, and specimens without priming. An acrylic resin was bonded to each specimen, and the specimens were performed the shear bond test. The MDTHP primer showed higher shear bond strength than the V-Primer for all specimens. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis showed that MDTHP was adsorbed on the Au-Pt-Pd alloy surface even after acetone cleaning. MDTHP binds not only with Cu but also with Au and Ag, promoting the bond strength of noble metal alloys. The effectiveness of MDTHP on dental noble metal alloys was suggested.

Synthesis and characterization of a methacrylate monomer with a thiohydantoin structure

The purpose of the current study was to synthesize a methacrylate monomer with a thiohydantoin structure. In a flask, (2-thiohydantoin-4-yl) propionic acid, 10-hyroxydecyl methacrylate, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were placed in a nitrogen atmosphere. A THF solution of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide was added and stirred at room temperature. Ethyl acetate and n-hexane were then added to the reaction mixture. The reacted slurry was purified by chromatography with silica gel and hexane-ethyl acetate gradient elution solvent. The structure of the compound was assigned with proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectral analysis. The colorless viscous liquid obtained in yield of 49% was characterized as 10-methacryloyloxydecyl-(2-thiohydantoin-4-yl)propionate (MDTHP) or 10-((3-(5-oxo-2-thioxysoimidazolidin-4-yl)propanoyl)oxy)decyl methacrylate (2-THPDM). The MDTHP was soluble to acetone, isopropanol, and methyl methacrylate up to 2.6% or more. This compound could be potentially applicable as a functional monomer for bonding metals and alloys.

The Effect of Mechanical and Chemical Surface Preparation Methods on the Bond Strength in Repairing the Surface of Metal-Ceramic Crowns with Composite Resin: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The aim of this study was to find the most effective surface preparation methods to enhance the bond strength between the composite resin and surface remaining from ceramic fracture. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, 39 studies were examined. The information related to the studies was extracted and categorized based on the type of the substrate material and applying or not applying thermal cycles (p<0.05). In the meta-analysis of substrate metal-ceramic samples without aging, application of air abrasion resulted in a significant increase of the bond strength to composite resin when using chemical compounds of the group without the mentioned functional monomers. Application of mechanical and chemical surface preparation methods can result in enhanced bond strength of the composite to the substrate material, which depends on the type of substrate material.

Chemical alteration of Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy surface by alumina air-abrasion and its effect on bonding to resin cement

The goal of this study was to investigate the chemical alteration of a dental alloy surface by alumina air-abrasion and its effect on bonding to resin cement. Alumina air-abrasion was carried out on an Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy. The surface morphology and chemical state of the abraded alloy were characterized. The effect of the air-abrasion on the shear bond strength between the alloy and a methyl methacrylate/tri-n-butyl borane (MMA/TBB) resin cement with some primers was evaluated. The surface characterization revealed that the alumina air-abrasion mechanically roughened and chemically altered the surface. The chemical alterations had two effects: (1) abraded alumina particles remained on the alloy surface and (2) copper ions were oxidized in the alloy surface. As the result, the shear bond strength test indicated that 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) contained primer worked with the abraded alloy surface, whereas it did not work with the non-abraded alloy surface.

Effect of Metal Primers on Bond Strength of a Composite Resin to Nickel-Chrome Metal Alloy

Abstract This study evaluated the effects of three metal primers and one multi-mode adhesive system on the shear bond strength (SBS) of a flowable composite resin to nickel-chrome metal alloy (Ni-Cr). Ninety plates were cast from Ni-Cr and divided in nine groups (n=10). The surfaces were sandblasted with Al2O3 and primed with three adhesive primers: Alloy Primer (AP), Universal Primer (TP) and RelyX Ceramic Primer (CP), and a multi-mode adhesive (Scotchbond Universal, SU). The Adper Single Bond Plus (SB) and SU adhesives were also combined with adhesive primers. Control group did not have any surface treatment. The groups were: AP, AP+SB, AP+SU, TP+SB, TP+SU, CP+SB, CP+SU and SU. Composite cylinders were built on alloy surface. After 24 h, half the specimens were subjected to SBS and the other half to thermal cycling before testing. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (a=0.05). Failure modes were assessed by SEM observation. Higher SBS were obtained with AP and TP combined with adhesives at 24 h and the lowest one for control group. Thermocycling reduced SBS for AP, CP+SU and SU. Combination between TP and SU resulted in the highest SBS after the thermocycling. TP groups showed all types of failures and high incidence of mixed failures. The use of AP and UP metal primers before application of SU and SB adhesive systems increased the SBS of composite to Ni-Cr. These combinations between metal primers and adhesives had the highest SBS after thermocycling.

Effect of thione primers on adhesive bonding between an indirect composite material and Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy

The current study evaluated the effect of primers on the shear bond strength of an indirect composite material joined to a silverpalladium-copper-gold (Ag-Pd-Cu-Au) alloy (Castwell). Disk specimens were cast from the alloy and were air-abraded with alumina. Eight metal primers were applied to the alloy surface. A light-polymerized indirect composite material (Solidex) was bonded to the alloy. Shear bond strength was determined both before and after the application of thermocycling. Two groups primed with Metaltite (thione) and M. L. Primer (sulfide) showed the greatest post-thermocycling bond strength (8.8 and 6.5 MPa). The results of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis suggested that the thione monomer (MTU-6) in the Metaltite primer was strongly adsorbed onto the Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy surface even after repeated cleaning with acetone. The application of either the thione (MTU-6) or sulfide primer is effective for enhancing the bonding between a composite material and Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy.

Effect of metal type and surface treatment on shear bond strength of resin cement (in vitro study)

BACKGROUND

Resin-bonded fixed partial dentures appeared to prevent the excessive preparation of dental tissue. Investigation of surface treatments to improve the bond of resin cements to metals may contribute to the longevity of these restorations. Due to the potential lack of ideal preparation form, the type of alloy and its surface pretreatment may have clinically relevant correlations with the retentive strength of castings to minimally retentive preparations.

AIM

The aim of this search is to study the bonding resin cement strength to different types of the metal alloy due to the surface treatment.

PURPOSE

Evaluate the effects of two different surface treatments on shear bond strength (SBS) between a palladium-silver alloy (Pb-Ag) and commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) cast alloy with resin luting cements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 120 cylinders having 5 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height were divided into two different main groups of metal type: 60 cylinders cast from CP Ti Grade I (Tritan - Reintitan - Germany-Dentaurum) as a base metal and 60 cylinders cast from Pb-Ag (Status-Yamakin, Japan) as a noble metal. 30 cylinders from each type were embedded in acrylic resin, and the rest were left without embedded in acrylic resin. All of the cylinders were smoothed with silicon carbide papers and sandblasting with 50-μm aluminum oxide. Specimens of each metal type were divided into two subgroups, which received one of the following luting techniques: (1) Multilink (Ivoclar Vivadent), (2) Multilink (Ivoclar Vivadent) plus metal zirconia primer (MZP). Every two cylinders from the same metal type and surface treatment were bonded to each other. All specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h and then thermal cycled (500 cycles, 5-55°C). After thermal cycling, the specimens were stored in 37°C distilled water for an additional 24 h before being tested in shear strength. Data (MPa) were analyzed using T-s tests to study the significance of various - means among groups and perform a comparison between each two groups of them.

RESULTS

The T-s tests indicated significant effect of combination of the sandblasting technique (aluminum oxide particles 50 μm) with the application of primer MZP before using resin cement (P < 0.05) independent of the metal type used. The metal type did not significantly affect SBS for any of the compared surface pretreatments.

CONCLUSION

Metal primer application significantly enhanced SBS to base and a noble metal. No significant differences in shear strength were found between alloys.

Effect of metal primers and tarnish treatment on bonding between dental alloys and veneer resin

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of metal primers on the bonding of dental alloys and veneer resin. Polyvinylpyrrolidone solution's tarnish effect on bonding strength was also investigated.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Disk-shape metal specimens (diameter 8 mm, thickness 1.5 mm) were made from 3 kinds of alloy (Co-Cr, Ti and Au-Ag-Pd alloy) and divided into 4 groups per each alloy. Half specimens (n=12 per group) in tarnished group were immersed into polyvinylpyrrolidone solution for 24 hours. In Co-Cr and Ti-alloy, Alloy Primer (MDP + VBATDT) and MAC-Bond II (MAC-10) were applied, while Alloy Primer and V-Primer (VBATDT) were applied to Au-Ag-Pd alloys. After surface treatment, veneering composite resin were applied and shear bond strength test were conducted.

RESULTS

Alloy Primer showed higher shear bond strength than MAC-Bond II in Co-Cr alloys and Au-Ag-Pd alloy (P<.05). However, in Ti alloy, there was no significant difference between Alloy Primer and MAC-Bond II. Tarnished Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloy surfaces presented significantly decreased shear bond strength.

CONCLUSION

Combined use of MDP and VBATDT were effective in bonding of the resin to Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloy. Tarnish using polyvinylpyrrolidone solution negatively affected on the bonding of veneer resin to Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloys.

Fifteen-year clinical performance of a resin-bonded fixed partial denture seated with a thione primer and a tri-n-butylborane-initiated luting agent

This article reports the clinical performance of a resin-bonded fixed partial denture (FPD) made of type IV gold alloy. The retainers were air-abraded with alumina particles and primed with a single-liquid thione priming agent (Metaltite). The FPD was then seated with a tri-n-butylborane-initiated adhesive resin (Super-Bond). After 15 years, the FPD is still functioning satisfactorily. The present materials and techniques are applicable to minimally invasive fixed prosthodontic treatments.

Influence of light irradiation on Vickers hardness of dual-cure cement polymerized under restorations

This study evaluated, by measuring Vickers hardness (Hv), the effects of these factors on the degree of polymerization of dual-cure cement (Panavia F2.0) placed under a restoration: light transmission property of restoratives materials, distance from the directly irradiated surface, and elapsed time after light irradiation. Two materials were used for the restoration: silver-palladium-copper-gold alloy (Alloy) versus zirconia (ZR). Restorations were cemented on bovine enamel by dual-cure cement. At 30 min, 2 h, 6 h, 1 day, and 1 week after definitive irradiation, Hv values at the enamel side of cement were evaluated at three measuring points: two points at the left and right margins and one point at the center. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA with Bonferroni correction (α=0.05). With the Alloy restoration, Hv value at the center was significantly lower than those at the margins at 30 min after irradiation. For both Alloy and ZR restorations, Hv value at each measuring point continued to increase significantly up to 6 h.

History and current state of metal adhesion systems used in prosthesis fabrication and placement

The adhesion techniques used in prosthetic dentistry have substantially improved with respect to retention of veneering resin to the metal framework of resin-veneered restorations and the bonding of resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs) to abutment teeth. In the early 1970s, prostheses relied on macromechanical retention for veneering surfaces and the retention holes of retainers. Later, retention was achieved by using small spherical particles. In addition, the use of small pits created by electrochemical corrosion was tested in resin-veneered restorations and RBFPDs. Thus, micromechanical retention gradually supplanted macromechanical retention. First-generation adhesive monomers were introduced at the end of the 1970s and were succeeded in the early 1980s by the marketing of adhesive resin cements, which were effective for use with non-noble alloys when surface oxidation procedures were used. In 1994, a second-generation adhesive primer for noble alloys was introduced, which prompted development of other adhesive primers. These primers were applied mainly to silver-palladium-copper-gold and type IV gold alloys and improved the reliability of RBFPDs. Recent studies have confirmed the effectiveness of such primers when used with high-gold-content metal ceramic alloys. Due to these developments, RBFPDs now have excellent esthetic characteristics.
