Lateral cervical meningocele

Although lateral meningoceles have been described in the thorax, they have not been previously reported in the neck. We describe an infant who was born with a lateral meningocele in the cervical posterior triangle that was felt clinically to be cystic hygroma. Surgical excision was complicated by a cerebral spinal fluid fistula and subsequent meningitis. Problems that this patient presented and potential complications in management are discussed. Although the clinical manifestations of lateral meningoceles and extradural cysts are quite different, there are many anatomic similarities between these entities and other cervical masses that confuse diagnosis and nosology. Their differential diagnosis is reviewed.

Posttraumatic pseudomeningomyelocele (enlarging fracture?) in a vertebral body. Case report

An unusual case is reported in which a posttraumatic peudomeningomyelocele developed over many years inside the body of a fractured lumbar vertebra, eroding the pedicle and causing progressive neurological deficit. The wall of the sac was mostly formed by the scalloped bar bone, and partly by a membrane resembling the dura. The terminal part of the conus medullaris and some nerve roots of the cauda equina formed the contents and parts of the wall of the outpouching of the subarachnoid space into the vertebral body. A comparison is drawn between this lesion and formation of an "enlarging fracture" of the skull. The surgical technique used for obliteration of this pseudomeningomyelocele is described.

✓ A case of progressive paraparesis is reported in which the normal spinal cord herniated through a defect in the ventral meninges and dura and became incarcerated in a cavity in the dorsal aspect of the body of T-7. Progress of the paraparesis was arrested by reduction of the hernia.
