Double aortic arch associated with coarctation of both limbs: a case report

A case of double aortic arch with coarctation of both limbs is described. The patient, a thirteen-year-old girl, demonstrated only the symptoms of coarctation and had no intracardiac anomalies. Discrete coarctation of bilateral limbs distal to the subclavian artery was shown by aortography. Although either double aortic arch or coarctation of the aorta is not so rare, the combination of these two anomalies is quite unusual. This is the third case in the world literature.

Double aortic arch associated with coarctation

An unusual combination of double aortic arch with coarctation of one of its limbs is described. We emphasize the importance of preoperative aortography to demonstrate or exclude coarctation which is clinically silent prior to surgery. This rare association will determine the surgical approach.

Magnetic resonance imaging of vascular rings

This case report illustrates the ability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to define the abnormal aortic anatomy associated with a vascular ring malformation. After a brief review of the clinical and pathologic aspects of vascular rings, the unique characteristics of MRI that make it particularly well suited for cardiovascular imaging are discussed. A comparison between MRI and other currently used imaging modalities emphasizes their differences and indicates some of the advantages of MRI of the cardiovascular system. We recommend MRI as the technique of choice for patients suspected of having a vascular ring and predict that MRI will play an important role in the diagnosis of cardiovascular abnormalities in the future.

Anomaly of the aortic arch: a case report

A case of the anomaly of the aortic arch was presented. The case showed subclavian steal syndrome due to the hypoplastic left subclavian artery associated with the double aortic arch with the obliterated left aortic arch. The hypoplastic left subclavian artery was replaced with the Dacron tube graft and the obliterated left arch was divided. Subclavian steal disappeared and the patient is in good condition at the present time.
