Bladder rupture in premature infant during voiding cystourethrography

We report what we believe to be the youngest patient with bladder rupture during voiding cystourethrography. If voiding cystourethrography needs to be done in a premature infant, the filling pressures should be minimized, multiple filling cycles should be avoided, and the voiding pressures should be minimized by using a small, balloon-less catheter.

Urinary bladder perforation in a very low birth weight infant. A case report

Perforation of the urinary bladder is a rare complication with a considerable degree of morbidity and mortality in modern neonatal intensive care units. We report a case of urinary bladder perforation, which probably was triggered by prolonged urinary retention secondary to morphine infusion, using credé maneuver on an already over-distended bladder, and inserting an umbilical catheter as urethral catheterization in an extremely low birth weight infant.

Neonatal bladder injury is rare and usually associated with umbilical artery catherization. Patients may present with apparent renal failure, abdominal distension, and respiratory distress. Treatment involves operative closure of the perforation and bladder drainage. A case of Foley catheter-induced bladder rupture in a premature infant, not previously reported in the literature, is detailed.

Neonatal bladder rupture: a complication of umbilical artery catheterization

We report on 2 cases of neonatal bladder rupture that resulted from umbilical artery manipulation. This rare complication occurs because of the close proximity of the urachus to the umbilical arteries and peritoneal reflection, and results in urinary ascites and respiratory compromise. Among 11 neonates in the literature who experienced this complication the mortality rate was 18% but all 8 neonates who underwent surgical repair, including our 2 patients, survived.
